[Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, issues of complexity and their application to cartographic practice and enquiry are addressed. After an initial discussion of the nature of complexity and its fitful study in cartography over recent years, an assessment is made of the potential for quantifying map complexity. A series of practical tests was devised and is described. These consider a wide range of metrics, including spatial statistical measures, entropy and image-based indices. Their application to both raster and vector mapping is investigated. Data compression shows promise as an index which can be used to characterize the graphical variation within the map face. The nature of digital data compression is described, with reference to raster map representations, and it is determined that a data-compression ratio can act as a simple and effective complexity measure. The paper concludes by listing some of the reasons why complexity, as measured by data compression, could be used in cartographic practice. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a new method for the combination of 2D GIS vector data and 2.5D DTM represented by triangulated irregular networks (TIN) to derive integrated triangular 2.5D object-based landscape models (also known as 2.5D-GIS-TIN) is presented. The algorithm takes into account special geometric constellations and fully exploits existing topologies of both input data sets, it “sews the 2D data into the TIN like a sewing-machine” while traversing the latter along the 2D data. The new algorithm is called radial topology algorithm. We discuss its advantages and limitations, and describe ways to eliminate redundant nodes generated during the integration process. With the help of four examples from practical work we show that it is feasible to compute and work with such integrated data sets. We also discuss the integrated data models in the light of various general requirements and conclude that the integration based on triangulations has a number of distinct advantages. [Termes IGN] Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and ReferencingRésumé : (Auteur) The TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) system has served the U.S. Census Bureau and other agencies' geographic needs successfully for two decades. Poor positional accuracy has however made it extremely difficult to integrate TIGER with advanced technologies and data sources such as GPS, high resolution imagery, and state/local GIS data. In this paper, a potential solution for conflation of TIGER road centerline data with other geospatial data is presented. The first two steps of the approach (feature matching and map alignment) remain the same as in traditional conflation. Following these steps, a third is added in which active contour models (snakes) are used to automatically move the vertices of TIGER roads to high-accuracy roads, rather than transferring attributes between the two datasets. This approach has benefits over traditional conflation methodology. It overcomes the problem of splitting vector road line segments, and it can be extended for vector imagery conflation as well. Thus, a variety of data sources (GIS, GPS, and Remote Sensing) could be used to improve TIGER data. Preliminary test results indicate that the three-step approach proposed in this paper performs very well. The positional accuracy of TIGER road centerline can be improved from an original 100 plus meters' RMS error to only 3 meters. Such an improvement can make TIGER data more useful for much broader application.
