[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) During the growing season, the photosynthesis and growth of boreal forests are regulated by physiological responses to environmental factors. Physiological variations affect the spectral properties of leaves. Linking canopy-level spectral reflectance to leaf-level processes for monitoring forest seasonal physiology using satellite images is hindered by view and illumination effects and variations in canopy structure. To better understand the connection between the two structural levels, we used nine narrow-band vegetation indices (VIs) derived from Hyperion imagery to track the seasonal dynamics of boreal forest stands: the photochemical reflectance indices (PRI and PRI515) related to the xanthophyll cycle, the red edge (RE) index, the Maccioni (Macc) and the green normalized difference vegetation index related to chlorophyll concentration (Ca + b), the carotenoid simple ratio and Gitelson carotenoid concentration index related to carotenoid concentration (Cx + c), the normalized difference vegetation index related to fractional cover, and the plant senescence reflectance index related to the Cx + c/Ca + b ratio. As ground truth, we used measurements of exposed pine shoot light use efficiency (LUE) and photosynthesis. Over the study period (May to August), LUE and photosynthesis were best correlated with the chlorophyll VIs Macc and RE. Both indices also exhibited the lowest coefficient of variation in association with forest structure. PRI, on the other hand, was affected by canopy structure and observation geometry and was uncoupled from LUE during the growing season. Our findings demonstrate that the photosynthesis and productivity of boreal forests in the growing season are best tracked using VIs related to total pigment concentration (i.e., chlorophyll). [Termes IGN] reliefRésumé : (Auteur) Radiometric correction of radar images is essential to produce accurate estimates of biophysical parameters related to forest structure and biomass. We present a new algorithm to correct radiometry for 1) terrain topography and 2) variations of canopy reflectivity with viewing and tree-terrain geometry. This algorithm is applicable to radar images spanning a wide range of incidence angles over terrain with significant topography and can also take into account aircraft attitude, antenna steering angle, and target geometry. The approach includes elements of both homomorphic and heteromorphic terrain corrections to correct for topographic effects and is followed by an additional radiometric correction to compensate for variations of canopy reflectivity with viewing and tree-terrain geometry. The latter correction is based on lookup tables and enables derivation of biophysical parameters irrespective of viewing geometry and terrain topography. We evaluate the performance of the new algorithm with airborne radar data and show that it performs better than classical homomorphic methods followed by cosine-based corrections. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (auteur) In urban areas, information concerning very high resolution land cover and especially material maps are necessary for several city modelling or monitoring applications. That is to say, knowledge concerning the roofing materials or the different kinds of ground areas is required. Airborne remote sensing techniques appear to be convenient for providing such information at a large scale. However, results obtained using most traditional processing methods based on usual red-green-blue-near infrared multispectral images remain limited for such applications. A possible way to improve classification results is to enhance the imagery spectral resolution using superspectral or hyperspectral sensors. In this study, it is intended to design a superspectral sensor dedicated to urban materials classification and this work particularly focused on the selection of the optimal spectral band subsets for such sensor. First, reflectance spectral signatures of urban materials were collected from 7 spectral libraires. Then, spectral optimization was performed using this data set. The band selection workflow included two steps, optimising first the number of spectral bands using an incremental method and then examining several possible optimised band subsets using a stochastic algorithm. The same wrapper relevance criterion relying on a confidence measure of Random Forests classifier was used at both steps. To cope with the limited number of available spectra for several classes, additional synthetic spectra were generated from the collection of reference spectra: intra-class variability was simulated by multiplying reference spectra by a random coefficient. At the end, selected band subsets were evaluated considering the classification quality reached using a rbf svm classifier. It was confirmed that a limited band subset was sufficient to classify common urban materials. The important contribution of bands from the Short Wave Infra-Red (SWIR) spectral domain (1000–2400 nm) to material classification was also shown. [Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (auteur) This paper proposes an hybrid online calibration method for a laser scanner mounted on a mobile platform also equipped with an imaging system. The method relies on finding the calibration parameters that best align the acquired points cloud to the images. The quality of this intermodal alignment is measured by Mutual information between image luminance and points reflectance. The main advantage and motivation is ensuring pixel accurate alignment of images and point clouds acquired simultaneously, but it is also much more flexible than traditional laser calibration methods. [Termes IGN] modèle logique de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Land-use classification of very high spatial resolution remote sensing (VHSR) imagery is one of the most challenging tasks in the field of remote sensing image processing. However, the land-use classification is hard to be addressed by the land-cover classification techniques, due to the complexity of the land-use scenes. Scene classification is considered to be one of the expected ways to address the land-use classification issue. The commonly used scene classification methods of VHSR imagery are all derived from the computer vision community that mainly deal with terrestrial image recognition. Differing from terrestrial images, VHSR images are taken by looking down with airborne and spaceborne sensors, which leads to the distinct light conditions and spatial configuration of land cover in VHSR imagery. Considering the distinct characteristics, two questions should be answered: (1) Which type or combination of information is suitable for the VHSR imagery scene classification? (2) Which scene classification algorithm is best for VHSR imagery? In this paper, an efficient spectral–structural bag-of-features scene classifier (SSBFC) is proposed to combine the spectral and structural information of VHSR imagery. SSBFC utilizes the first- and second-order statistics (the mean and standard deviation values, MeanStd) as the statistical spectral descriptor for the spectral information of the VHSR imagery, and uses dense scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) as the structural feature descriptor. From the experimental results, the spectral information works better than the structural information, while the combination of the spectral and structural information is better than any single type of information. Taking the characteristic of the spatial configuration into consideration, SSBFC uses the whole image scene as the scope of the pooling operator, instead of the scope generated by a spatial pyramid (SP) commonly used in terrestrial image classification. The experimental results show that the whole image as the scope of the pooling operator performs better than the scope generated by SP. In addition, SSBFC codes and pools the spectral and structural features separately to avoid mutual interruption between the spectral and structural features. The coding vectors of spectral and structural features are then concatenated into a final coding vector. Finally, SSBFC classifies the final coding vector by support vector machine (SVM) with a histogram intersection kernel (HIK). Compared with the latest scene classification methods, the experimental results with three VHSR datasets demonstrate that the proposed SSBFC performs better than the other classification methods for VHSR image scenes.
