[Termes IGN] polarisationRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate mapping the forest stand mean height (FSMH) and aboveground biomass (AGB) with a high spatial resolution are important for monitoring carbon stocks on Earth and the variability and trends of terrestrial carbon fluxes. The recently launched Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (multispectral) missions offers a new opportunity to map FSMH and AGB. Here we present a methodological framework to map the FSMH and AGB at a resolution of 10 m in Yichun, Northeast China, by integrating field plots, Sentinel imagery, topographic data, and national geographical conditions monitoring data. First, a spatial continuous FSMH product was retrieved using an empirical model, which adopts the backscattering of SAR Sentinel-1B and the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC) variable from multispectral Sentinel-2A imagery. Subsequently, three AGB estimation models were developed for different forest types to link the field measurements to the FSMH, biophysical variables, spectral vegetation index, and topographic variables using the random forest algorithm. The mapping results show that the FSMH estimated using SAR backscatter values from VH polarization is more robust and accurate than that based on VV polarization. Furthermore, the three AGB estimation models based on three different forest types perform better than the model built by grouping all forest types together. The determination coefficient (R2) and root-mean-squared error (RMSE) range from 0.69 to 0.74 and 23.38 Mg/ha to 24.21 Mg/ha, respectively. Overall, our study demonstrates that the proposed methodological framework can be used to map the FSMH and AGB products at a high spatial resolution utilizing freely accessible Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery. It controls the energy balance of bare soils, in particular the angular distribution of scattered and emitted radiation. This provides clues to understand the intimate structure and evolution of planetary surfaces over ages. In this article we investigate the capacity of the Hapke photometric model, the most widely used in planetary science, to retrieve surface roughness from multiangular reflectance data. Its performance is still a question at issue and we lack validation experiments comparing model retrievals with ground measurements. To address this issue and to show the potentials and limits of the Hapke model, we compare the mean slope angle determined from very high resolution digital elevation models of volcanic and sedimentary terrains sampled in the Asal-Ghoubbet rift (Republic of Djibouti), to the photometric roughness estimated by model inversion on multiangular reflectance data measured on the ground (Chamelon field goniometer) and from space (Pleiades images). The agreement is good on moderately rough surfaces, in the domain of validity of the Hapke model, and poor on others. While current techniques offer a substantial improvement regarding the quality of the reconstructed geometry, the degree of realism of the overall appearance is still lacking as the reconstruction of accurate surface appearance is highly challenging due to the complex interplay of surface geometry, reflectance properties and surrounding illumination. We present a novel approach that allows the reconstruction of both the geometry and the spatially varying surface albedo of a scene from RGB-D and IR data obtained via commodity sensors. In comparison to previous approaches, our approach offers an improved robustness and a significant speed-up to even fulfill the real-time requirements. For this purpose, we exploit the benefits of scene segmentation to improve albedo estimation due to the resulting better segment-wise coupling of IR and RGB data that takes into account the wavelength characteristics of different materials within the scene. The estimated albedo is directly integrated into the dense volumetric reconstruction framework using a novel weighting scheme to generate high-quality results. In our evaluation, we demonstrate that our approach allows albedo capturing of complicated scenarios including complex, high-frequent and strongly varying lighting as well as shadows. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) The use of land surface temperature (LST) for monitoring the consumption and water status of crops requires data at fine spatial and temporal resolutions. Unfortunately, the current spaceborne thermal sensors provide data at either high temporal (e.g. MODIS: Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer) or high spatial (e.g. Landsat) resolution separately. Disaggregating low spatial resolution (LR) LST data using ancillary data available at high spatio-temporal resolution could compensate for the lack of high spatial resolution (HR) LST observations. Existing LST downscaling approaches generally rely on the fractional green vegetation cover (fgv) derived from HR reflectances but they do not take into account the soil water availability to explain the spatial variability in LST at HR. In this context, a new method is developed to disaggregate kilometric MODIS LST at 100 m resolution by including the Sentinel-1 (S-1) backscatter, which is indirectly linked to surface soil moisture, in addition to the Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 (L-7 & L-8) reflectances. The approach is tested over two different sites – an 8 km by 8 km irrigated crop area named “R3” and a 12 km by 12 km rainfed area named “Sidi Rahal” in central Morocco (Marrakech) – on the seven dates when S-1, and L-7 or L-8 acquisitions coincide with a one-day precision during the 2015–2016 growing season. The downscaling methods are applied to the 1 km resolution MODIS-Terra LST data, and their performance is assessed by comparing the 100 m disaggregated LST to Landsat LST in three cases: no disaggregation, disaggregation using Landsat fgv only, disaggregation using both Landsat fgv and S-1 backscatter. When including fgv only in the disaggregation procedure, the mean root mean square error in LST decreases from 4.20 to 3.60 °C and the mean correlation coefficient (R) increases from 0.45 to 0.69 compared to the non-disaggregated case within R3. The new methodology including the S-1 backscatter as input to the disaggregation is found to be systematically more accurate on the available dates with a disaggregation mean error decreasing to 3.35 °C and a mean R increasing to 0.75. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Spectral imagery using micro-unmanned aerial vehicles is rapidly advancing. This study compared reflectance calibration methods for imagery acquired using the Parrot Sequoia imager, a commercial multispectral sensor package. For the study, two orthomosaics were calibrated using 1) a manufacturer-suggested AIRINOV standard correction using PIX4D software and 2) the Empirical Line Calibration (ELC) method using ground radiometric data on specific in-scene targets. Both scenes were analyzed for target spectral agreement by ground radiometric survey. Regression analysis demonstrated more favorable target correlation for the ELC imagery than the AIRINOV-calibrated imagery, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) analysis supporting these results. Finally, classification maps were produced between the data sets. Error analysis resulted in an overall accuracy of 24% for the AIRINOV map compared to ELC-based truth data, with a considerable number of pixels associated with brighter targets unclassified. These results demonstrate the need for standardized calibration procedures in the spectral correction of small-format remote sensor data.
