[Termes IGN] image radar moiréeRésumé : (Auteur) In the past few decades, several methods have been developed for despeckling synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. A considerable number of them have been derived under the assumption of a fully-developed speckle model in which the multiplicative speckle noise is supposed to be a white process. Unfortunately, the transfer function of SAR acquisition systems can introduce a statistical correlation, which decreases the despeckling efficiency of such filters. In this paper, a whitening method is proposed for processing a complex image acquired by a SAR system. We demonstrate that the proposed approach allows the successful application of classical despeckling algorithms. First, we perform an estimation of the SAR system frequency response based on some statistical properties of the acquired image and by using realistic assumptions. Then, a decorrelation process is applied on the acquired image, taking into account the presence of point targets. Finally, the image is despeckled. The experimental results show that the despeckling filters achieve better performance when they are preceded by the proposed whitening method; furthermore, the radiometric characteristics of the image are preserved. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Statistical measures of patterns (textures) in surface roughness are used to quantitatively differentiate volcanic deposit facies on the Pumice Plain, on the northern flank of Mount St. Helens (MSH). Surface roughness values are derived from a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud collected in 2004 from a fixed-wing airborne platform. Patterns in surface roughness are characterized using co-occurrence texture statistics. Pristine-pyroclastic, reworked-pyroclastic, mudflow, boulder beds, eroded lava flows, braided streams, and other units within the Pumice Plain are all found to have significantly distinct roughness textures. The MSH deposits are reasonably accessible, and the textural variations have been verified in the field. Results of this work indicate that by affecting the distribution of large clasts and tens-of-meter scale landforms, modification of pyroclastic deposits by lahars alters the morphology of the surface in detectable quantifiable ways. When a lahar erodes a pyroclastic deposit, surface roughness increases, as does the randomness in the deposit surface. Conversely, when a lahar deposits material, the resulting landforms are less rough but more random than pristine pumice-rich pyroclastic deposits. By mapping these relationships and others, volcanic deposit facies can be differentiated. This new method of mapping, based on roughness texture, has the potential to aid mapping efforts in more remote regions, both on this planet and elsewhere in the solar system. Linear filters are used to provide enhanced spatial patterns. For each pixel location, we compute combined spectral and texture features using local spectral histograms, which concatenate local histograms of all input bands. We regard each feature as a linear combination of several representative features, each of which corresponds to a segment. Segmentation is given by estimating combination weights, which indicate segment ownership of pixels. We present segmentation solutions where representative features are either known or unknown. We also show that feature dimensions can be greatly reduced via subspace projection. The scale issue is investigated, and an algorithm is presented to automatically select proper scales, which does not require segmentation at multiple-scale levels. Experimental results demonstrate the promise of the proposed method. Such three-dimensional (3D) maps allow for easy orientation and provide the observer with an immersive impression of the landscape to be discovered or remembered. The most impressive panoramic masterpieces are almost exclusively painted manually or with minor digital tool support. Software packages that allow modern cartographers to create 3D maps of comparable visual quality (semi-) automatically are currently not available. Computer graphics has developed a number of methods for painterly rendering, including imitating the characteristics of a panorama artist's brush stroke and raster-based methods that synthesize new texture from examples. In this article, the latter approach is explored, and the idea of creating terrain textures for arbitrary regions by reassembling them from pieces of scanned hand-painted masterworks is pursued. Panorama painters vary the appearance of land cover depending on terrain characteristics and viewing parameters. This article suggests how the example-based texture synthesis approach could be adapted to accommodate such dependencies. A case study of transferring the appearance of H.C. Berann's hand-painted panorama of the Swiss Jungfrau region to a digital panorama of a different region is presented. The case study shows that a number of previously unanticipated hurdles are encountered when using hand-painted panoramas as input to an example-based texture synthesis algorithm. By identifying the challenges of applying texture-by-example to panoramic map making and by suggesting possible solutions, the authors aim to promote the creation of more visually appealing and legible digital panoramic maps.
