[Termes IGN] polarimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are affected by speckle noise, originated by the SAR system's coherent nature. The problem of speckle noise in one-dimensional (1-D) data is already solved, as speckle has a multiplicative characteristic. SAR polarimetry represents an extension to multidimensional data by the use of polarization wave diversity. As a consequence of the existence of a correlation degree between the SAR images, the 1-D speckle noise model cannot be extended to multidimensional SAR data. This paper is devoted to present a completely new speckle noise model for the complex covariance matrix describing polarimetric SAR data in the distributed scatterers case. As will be shown, this new model is able to identify which are the noise mechanisms in all the covariance matrix elements. The speckle noise model is validated by using real L-band polarimetric data acquired with the German E-SAR sensor. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery for classification of urban and suburban areas and present a fuzzy logic methodology to improve classification accuracy. Panchromatic and multispectral IKONOS image datasets are analyzed for two urban locations in this study. Both multispectral and pansharpened multispectral images are first classified using a traditional maximum-likelihood approach. Maximum-likelihood classification accuracies between 79 % to 87 % were achieved with significant misclassification error between the spectrally similar Road and Building urban land cover types. A number of different texture measures were investigated, and a length-width contextual measure is developed. These spatial measures were used to increase the discrimination between spectrally similar classes, thereby yielding higher accuracy urban land cover maps. Finally, a hierarchical fuzzy classification approach that makes use of both spectral and spatial information is presented. This technique is shown to increase the discrimination between spectrally similar urban land cover classes and results in classification accuracies that are 8 % to I I% larger than those from the traditional maximumlikelihood approach. [Termes IGN] virageRésumé : (Auteur) The paper presents an approach for roads detection based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and road database The vectors provided by the database are refined using active contours (snakes). In this framework, we firstly develop a restoration filter based on the frost filter achieving an acceptable compromise between speckle elimination and lines preserving. This is followed by a line plausibility calculation step which is used to deform the snake from its initial location toward the final solution. The snake is reformulated using finite elements method. The setting of the snake parameters is not an obvious problem especially when they are tuned by trialanderror process. We propose a new automatic computational rule for the snake parameters. Our approach is validated by a series of tests on synthetic and SAR images. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we evaluate the potential of a frequency-based contextual classifier (FBC) for landuse classification with a panchromatic Ikonos image. To capture the spatial arrangement of image graylevel values and use such information in image classification, we applied texture spectrum (TS) directly in the FBC. The effects of several data preprocessing and reduction methods on the performance of the FBC are also evaluated. The methods include four graylevel reduction (GLR) techniques and several modifications to the TS technique. The purpose of data reduction is to improve the classification efficiency of the FBC. The GLR schemes were minmax linear compression (LC), gray level binning (BN), histogram equalization (HE), and piecewise nonlinear compression (PC). Instead of using the texture measures derived from the texture spectrum, we directly applied texture spectra of various sizes in the classification. We modified the encoding algorithm in the TS and were able to reduce the number of texture units from its original 6561 to 256, 81, and 16, leading to as much as a 410 times computation efficiency. The original image and GLR images were subsequently classified with the FBC. We compared the classification accuracies and found that the GLR methods resulted in accuracies similar to that of the original image (within 0.03 kappa value). There was little difference in classification accuracy (within 0.03 kappa value) among the three modified TS methods, which were all outperformed by the original TS method. All TS methods performed considerably better than the use of the original image and the GLR methods. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We use Gabor filters to extract texture features at different scales and orientations from hyperspectral images. The texture features are derived from both individual bands and combinations of bands. We consider both spectral binning and principal components analysis for reducing the dimensionality of the input data. Using a database of Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer image regions, we evaluate the performance of this approach for recognizing hyperspectral textures. We show that opponent features that consider combinations of spectral bands often help improve performance. We also examine the dependence of recognition performance on the dimensionality reduction strategy and the number of spectral bands.
