[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Editeur) A foundational work in information design and visualization, this book by Jacques Bertin is the most recent title from the Esri Press Classic Series. Originally published in French in 1967, the book is based on Bertin's practical experience as a cartographer and provides the first cohesive, analytic theory of graphic representation. It is an essential reference for cartographers, graphic designers, illustrators, and geographers. This book is an unprecedented attempt to synthesize the principles of graphic communication with the logic of standard rules applied to writing and topography. The book includes more than 1,000 maps and diagrams to illustrate and examine graphic techniques including shape, orientation, color, texture, volume, and size. [Termes IGN] TrenteRésumé : (Auteur) In areas with complex three-dimensional features, slope and aspect interact with light conditions and significantly affect the spatial structure of images acquired by remote sensing instruments (for example, by changing the distribution of shadows and affecting the texture of high resolution imagery). In this scenario, this paper analyses the potential and the effectiveness of an automatic classification system to identify three fundamental vegetation classes (forest, grassland and crops) in the complex topography of the Italian Alps (Autonomous Province of Trento, Italy). This classification system is based on the fusion of spectral information provided by the SPOT-5 multi-spectral channels (Ground Instantaneous Field of View, GIFOV, equal to 10 m) and textural information extracted from airborne digital orthophotos (GIFOV equal to 1 m) and is designed to be user-friendly. The texture of the digital orthophotos was modelled using defined bidirectional variograms, thereby extracting additional information unavailable in first-order texture analyses. Using SPOT-5 multi-spectral information alone, the classification accuracy in the investigated alpine area was equal to 87.5%, but increased to 92.1% when texture information was included. In particular, the texture information significantly increased the classification accuracy for crops (from 68.9% to 87.9%), especially orchards that tend to be classified as lowland deciduous forests, and herbaceous crops (such as maize) that are often misclassified as grasslands. A further simple majority analysis increased the ability of detecting grassland, crops and urban zones. The combination of the majority analysis and the proposed automatic classification system seems an effective approach to classifying vegetation types in highly fragmented and complex Alpine landscapes on a regional scale. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a new unsupervised segmentation method adapted to describe façade shapes from a single calibrated street level image. The image is first rectified thanks to its vanishing points to facilitate the extraction of facade main structures which are characterized by a horizontal and vertical gradient accumulation which enhances the detection of repetitive structures. Our aim is to build a hierarchy of rectangular regions bounded by the local maxima of the gradient accumulation. The algorithm recursively splits horizontally or vertically the image into two parts by maximizing the total length of regular edges until the radiometric content of the region hypothesis corresponds to a given model (planar and generalized cylinders). A regular edge is a segment of a main gradient direction that effectively matches to a contour of the image. This segmentation could be an interesting tool for facade modelling and is in particular well suited for facade texture compression. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The area occupied by plastic-covered greenhouses has undergone rapid growth in recent years, currently exceeding 500,000 ha worldwide. Due to the vast amount of input (water, fertilisers, fuel, etc.) required, and output of different agricultural wastes (vegetable, plastic, chemical, etc.), the environmental impact of this type of production system can be serious if not accompanied by sound and sustainable territorial planning. For this, the new generation of satellites which provide very high resolution imagery, such as QuickBird and IKONOS can be useful. In this study, one QuickBird and one IKONOS satellite image have been used to cover the same area under similar circumstances. The aim of this work was an exhaustive comparison of QuickBird vs. IKONOS images in land-cover detection. In terms of plastic greenhouse mapping, comparative tests were designed and implemented, each with separate objectives. Firstly, the Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) was applied using five different approaches combining R, G, B, NIR, and panchromatic bands. The combinations of the bands used, significantly influenced some of the indexes used to classify quality in this work. Furthermore, the quality classification of the QuickBird image was higher in all cases than that of the IKONOS image. Secondly, texture features derived from the panchromatic images at different window sizes and with different grey levels were added as a fifth band to the R, G, B, NIR images to carry out the MLC. The inclusion of texture information in the classification did not improve the classification quality. For classifications with texture information, the best accuracies were found in both images for mean and angular second moment texture parameters. The optimum window size in these texture parameters was 3*3 for IK images, while for QB images it depended on the quality index studied, but the optimum window size was around 15*15. With regard to the grey level, the optimum was 128. Thus, the optimum texture parameter depended on the main objective of the image classification. If the main classification goal is to minimize the number of pixels wrongly classified, the mean texture parameter should be used, whereas if the main classification goal is to minimize the unclassified pixels the angular second moment texture parameter should be used. On the whole, both QuickBird and IKONOS images offered promising results in classifying plastic greenhouses.
