We present a hierarchical strategy to extract, analyze and delineate vegetation areas according to their height. To detect urban vegetation areas, we develop two methods, one using spectral indices and the second one based on a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. Once vegetation areas detected, we differentiate lawns from treed areas by computing a texture operator on the Digital Surface Model (DSM). A robust region growing method based on the DSM is proposed for an accurate delineation of tree crowns. Delineation results are compared to results obtained by a Random Walk region growing technique for tree crown delineation. We evaluate the accuracy of the tree crown delineation results to a reference manual delineation. Results obtained are discussed and the influential factors are put forward. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We propose the use of texture motifs, or characteristic spatially recurrent patterns, for modeling and detecting geospatial objects. A method is proposed for learning a texture-motif model from object examples and detecting objects based on the learned model. The model is learned in a two-layered framework: the first learns the constituent "texture elements" of the motif and, the second, the spatial distribution of the elements. In the experimental session, we demonstrate the model training and selection methodology for objects given a set of training examples. The utility of such models for detecting the presence or absence of geospatial objects in large aerial image datasets comprising tens of thousands of image tiles is then emphasized. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The ability to distinguish between different types of surfaces is the strength of texture descriptors in the analysis of satellite imagery. Although the most common analytical means are based on co-occurrence analysis, considerable progress has been made in understanding the role of fractal and multifractal analysis in remote sensing. After indicating the limitations of using fractal dimensions as the only texture descriptor and introducing the concept of multifractal geometry, we consider the effectiveness of using multifractal and second-order fractal features in image classification. In particular, we present the results of comparing two supervised classifications of an Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) image of Scotland using classical texture features and multifractal second-order fractal ones. In terms of percentage correct and Khat statistics, this study provides evidence, with a confidence limit of 95%, that classifications using multifractal and second-order fractal features are more accurate than those using classical features. The classification algorithm used for this study is a typical minimum distance classifier.
