[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Adapting forests to climate change is a critical issue for forest management. It requires an understanding of climate effects on forest systems and the ability to forecast how these effects may change over time. We used Spanish Second National Forest Inventory data and the SIMANFOR platform to simulate the evolution of CO2 stock (CO2 Mg · ha−1) and accumulation rates (CO2 Mg · ha−1 · year−1) for the 2000–2100 period in pure and mixed stands managed under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) in Spain. We hypothesized that (1) the more optimistic climate scenarios (SSP1 > > SSP5) would have higher CO2 stock and accumulation rates; (2) mixed stands would have higher CO2 stock and accumulation rates than pure stands; and (3) the behavior of both variables would vary based on forest composition (conifer–conifer vs. conifer–broadleaf). We focused on Pinus sylvestris L., and its main mixtures with Pinus nigra, Pinus pinaster, Fagus sylvatica and Quercus pyrenaica. The SSP scenarios had correlating CO2 stock values in which SSP1 > SSP2 > SSP3 > SSP5, ranging from the most optimistic (SSP1) to the most pessimistic (SSP5). Though pure stands had higher CO2 stock at the beginning, differences with regard to mixed stands were drastically reduced at the end of the simulation period. We also found an increase in the aboveground CO2 proportion compared to belowground in conifer–broadleaf mixtures, while the opposite trend occurred in conifer–conifer mixtures. Overall CO2 accumulation rates decreased significantly from the beginning to the end of the simulation period, but our results indicated that this decline would be less drastic in mixed stands than in pure ones. At the end of the simulation period, CO2 accumulation rates were higher in mixed stands than in pure stands for all mixtures, fractions (aboveground and belowground) and SSPs. Knowing the evolution of mixed forests in different climate scenarios is relevant for developing useful silvicultural guidelines in the Mediterranean region and optimizing forestry adaptation strategies. Better understanding can also inform the design of management measures for transitioning from pure stands to more resource efficient, resistant and resilient mixed stands, in efforts to reduce forest vulnerability in the face of climate change. This work highlights the importance and benefits of mixed stands in terms of CO2 accumulation, stand productivity and species diversity. [Termes IGN] périphérie urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Three-dimensional urban form has a considerable influence on urban sustainability, being the reason spatial planning regulate it. Yet, we know very little about the development of building density and building height over time. In this study, we characterize the horizontal and vertical patterns of urban development in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza between 1965 and 2015. Our analysis is based on a unique combination of cadastral data and LiDAR point clouds, which we use to characterize building footprint, height, and volume, at decadal intervals. Subsequently, we characterize urban expansion and densification processes using building volume and Urban Form Types. We find that height of new buildings shows a significant downward trend during the 70′s for the four urban areas and a decreasing trend after the 2008 real estate bubble for the cases of Barcelona and Valencia. Over the analyzed period a decrease of 116, 313, 217 and 157 cm in average building height was observed for Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza, respectively. Urbanized volume of all cities together has expanded by roughly 350% between 1950 and 2015. Sparse built-up form showed the largest absolute increase, although it contains only a low fraction of new built-up volume. A clear trend towards expansion is observed in city outskirts and the development of new urban clusters in municipalities closer to the main city. At the same time, settlements have followed incremental steps towards densification of the city-cores over time. This study provides a first step towards comprehensive understanding of long-term changes in 3D urban form, which can inform the development of policies that target the third dimension in urban form to steer sustainable urban growth. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mediterranean riparian forests have been altered by past use and are also negatively impacted by climate and hydrological droughts. However, we lack data on their historical changes in extent combined with multi-proxy, long-term assessments of tree growth and leaf gas exchange responses to climate, drought severity and river flow. These evaluations must also consider their current stand structure and the amount of lying deadwood which are proxies of river dynamics and forest maturity. To fill these research gaps, we studied four riparian tree species (Populus alba, Populus nigra, Fraxinus angustifolia and Ulmus minor) inhabiting a Mediterranean riparian forest located in north-eastern Spain. We quantified and analyzed: stand structure; lying deadwood; radial growth; relationships between growth, climate variables, the SPEI drought index and river flow; stable C (δ13C) and O (δ18O) isotopes in wood of P. alba, P. nigra and F. angustifolia; and earlywood anatomy in F. angustifolia. Mature sites were dominated by P. nigra and F. angustifolia and showed the highest amount of decayed lying deadwood. Radial growth was reduced by drought and low spring-summer river flow. We found the highest growth responses to 3- (P. nigra, r = 0.62; P. alba, r = 0.46) or 12-month SPEI (F. angustifolia, r = 0.54; U. minor, r = 0.53). The coordinated decrease in δ18O and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE) in P. alba and P. nigra could involve an increase in stomatal conductance rate. P. alba and P. nigra were more enriched in δ18O than F. angustifolia, suggesting the former used more enriched shallow groundwater in dry periods. The F. angustifolia WUE and P. nigra δ18O series were positively and negatively correlated with the SPEI, respectively. The F. angustifolia hydraulic diameter decreased in response to drought, whereas its vessel density and WUE were positively associated. Overall, P. nigra and F. angustifolia were the species most responsive to drought. The causes of these phenomena, which are usually related to local and regional extreme hot droughts, have been extensively investigated from a physiological viewpoint. However, the consequences of die-off process in terms of demography and vegetation dynamics have been less thoroughly addressed. Here, we projected P. sylvestris plot dynamics after a die-off event, under climate change scenarios, considering also their early demographic stages (i.e., seedlings, saplings and ingrowth from the sapling to adult class), to assess the resilience of P. sylvestris populations after such events. We used Integral Projection Models (IPMs) to project future plot structure under current climate, and under RCP4.5 and RCP8.0 climate scenarios, using climatic suitability – extracted from Species Distribution Models – as a covariable in the estimations of vital rates over time. Field data feeding IPMs were obtained from two successive surveys, at the end of the die-off event (2013) and four years later (2017), undertaken on populations situated across the P. sylvestris range of distribution in Catalonia (NE Spain). Plots affected by die-off experienced a loss of large trees, which causes that basal area, tree diameter and tree density will remain lower for decades relative to unaffected plots. After the event, this situation is partially counterbalanced in affected plots by a greater increase in basal area and seedling recruitment into tree stage, thus promoting resilience. However, resilience is delayed under the climate-change scenarios with warmer and drier conditions involving additional physiological stress, due to a reduced abundance of seedlings and a smaller plot basal area. The study shows lagged effect of drought-induced die-off events on forest structure, also revealing stabilizing mechanisms, such as recruitment and tree growth release, which enhance resilience. However, these mechanisms would be jeopardized by oncoming regional warming. This text reflects on the ability of the landscape to situate inherited assets within a framework of spatial coherence in relation to the peri-urban spaces of large cities, heritage areas of great historical depth that have been particularly aggressively exposed to the urban development dynamics of the second half of the twentieth century. In order to address these often forgotten spaces, this text presents a system for heritage management argued from the standpoint of and towards the landscape and based on historical interpretation, cartographic analysis, mapping and digital documentation. Geographic technologies and graphic expression are basic pillars to integrate historical information with the language and resources of the disciplines involved in landscape planning and design, advancing criteria for a forward-looking landscape-based heritage management.
