[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The aims of the study are the description of the distribution patterns of main forest tree species along complex environmental gradients and niche characterization, using the data from 772 plots from the third Spanish National Forest Inventory. Simultaneously, we would like to identify the relative contribution of spatial and environmental variation to the species compositional patterns. Spatially structured environmental and fine-scale spatial variables explained more tree compositional distribution than broad-scale spatial variables, suggesting that niche partitioning is the main process influencing forest species abundances along this gradient. However, vegetation compositional changes were mainly determined by the north–south topographic-climatic differences (primary coenocline), although steepness was also related to the particular location of some plant communities. Unimodal response curves dominate along the gradients, with tree species optima at different points, providing evidence of a sufficient amount of compositional turnover. Niche location of trait-related tree species is closely located. Tree species occupying environments with sharp contrast or transitional environments have broadest niches, whereas those species occupying localized habitats showed the narrowest niches. The methodology used provides an objective assessment of the shape of species' responses along complex ecological gradients, as well as of the spatial and environmental factors implicated in their distribution patterns using datasets from national forest inventories. The description of the main factors determining the gradients and the species distributions and niche characteristics will improve our ability to discuss potential conservation management goals or threats due to land uses changes and future climate change. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (auteur) We explore the use of toponyms as an information source of land use changes in heathland landscapes of Galicia, an Atlantic region of northwest Spain. Heathlands are prized for their condition of remarkable landscapes, biodiversity reservoirs and cultural heritage areas. A strong decline of heathland cover has taken place in Atlantic Europe during the last centuries, as land use changes toward more productive systems. Galicia retains a high proportion of heathland cover, but there is a trend of land use transformation to forest plantations and improved pastures. Place names rooted with vernacular names of heathers (Erica, Calluna and Daboecia genera, Ericaceae) were recorded in a geo-referenced database. We applied spatial statistics to account for correlation between heath toponym density and present-day heathland distribution. We did not find such correlation, but differences were found for altitudinal ranks, suggesting a wider habitat loss at lowlands than at mountain areas. We discuss the possibilities of a systematic use of toponymic databases in historical landscape reconstruction. [Termes IGN] teneur en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) The Water Aerosol Lidar (WALI) system, deployed for 14 weeks during 2012 & 2013 on the island of Menorca, provided the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean eXperiment (HyMeX) with an opportunity to perform a multi-platform comparison on moisture retrievals at the timescales relevant for extreme precipitation events in the West Mediterranean basin. After calibration, the WALI lidar yields nighttime profiles of water vapor with ~7% accuracy from the ground up to 7 km, and daytime coverage of the lower layers, alongside common aerosol retrievals. It is used to characterize the water vapor profile product given by the IASI instrument on-board MetOp-B, and the fields simulated by the Météo-France AROME-WMED model and the open-source WRF model. IASI is found to be reliable above 1 km altitude, and the two models obtain similar high scores in the middle troposphere; WRF beneficiates from a more accurate modelling of the planetary boundary layer. [Termes IGN] transmissibilitéRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda, is a potential vector of the pitch canker disease pathogen. The insect could transmit the pathogenic fungus during its maturation or regeneration feeding on the shoots of healthy pine crowns.
Context: Fusarium circinatum, the causal agent of pitch canker disease, currently affects Pinus radiata in northern Spain, causing pitch-soaked cankers and tree death. Although several species of the family Scolytinae have been reported as vectors of this pathogen, the role of the pine shoot beetle T. piniperda remains unclear.
Aims: The general objective of this study was to determine whether T. piniperda is a vector for the pitch canker pathogen F. circinatum. For this purpose, Leach’s postulates (1) an association between T. piniperda and trees affected by pitch canker disease; (2) regular visits by T. piniperda to healthy P. radiata trees; (3) presence of the pathogen on the insect in nature; and (4) transmission of the pathogen to disease-free host material under controlled conditions.
Methods: Fresh green shoots with feeding galleries were collected from the ground, breeding galleries were collected from diseased trunks and insects were collected during their dispersion flights. A laboratory experiment was conducted in which specimens of T. piniperda were inoculated with the pathogen prior to feeding on shoots.
Results: In the field, T. piniperda was found to be associated with both diseased and healthy P. radiata trees, and F. circinatum was found to be present, at low rates, on the exoskeleton of T. piniperda. In the laboratory experiment, evidence of the ability of T. piniperda to transfer the pathogen to healthy shoots was found.
Conclusions: The study findings indicate T. piniperda as a plausible vector of this pathogen. Climate–growth relationships changed over time, with greater sensitivity in recent years due to increasing aridity. A common dendroclimatic signal among sites was found, suggesting that climate change is the main responsible for the observed variation in tree growth.
Context: Understanding the response of Mediterranean forests to climate change is required to assess their vulnerability and to develop measures that may limit the impact of future climate change.
Aims: We analyzed the sensitivity of several populations of Pinus pinea (Stone pine) in Southern and Central Spain and Portugal to climate and identified some responses to climate change.
Methods: We constructed tree ring chronologies and studied the dendroclimatic signal over the last century.
Results: There were similarities in tree ring growth and response to climate among sites. Growth was enhanced after precipitation during the previous autumn and the current spring and was limited by water shortage. In recent decades, aridity increased in the study region and the sensitivity of tree ring growth to water availability increased at all study sites. We also observed an enhanced growth synchrony among chronologies as well as an increase in ring width variability during the last decades.
Conclusion: The radial growth of P. pinea indicated strong effects of climate change. The climatic signal in tree ring chronologies suggested a plastic growth response to climate of this species, although the enhanced growth synchrony and variability in recent years suggest the presence of conditions that are limiting for growth.
