[Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Field data in forest inventories are increasingly obtained using proximal sensing technologies, often under fixed-point sampling. Under fixed-point sampling some trees are not detected due to instrument bias and occlusions, hence involving an underestimation of the number of trees per hectare (N). The aim here is to evaluate various approaches to correct tree occlusions and instrument bias estimates calculated with data from ForeStereo (proximal sensor based on stereoscopic hemispherical images) under a fixed-point sampling strategy. Distance-sampling and the new hemispherical photogrammetric correction (HPC), which combines image segmentation-based correction for instrument bias with a novel approach for estimating the proportion of shadowed sampling area in stereoscopic hemispherical images, best estimated N and basal area (BA). Distance-sampling slightly overestimated N (11% bias, 0.60 Pearson coefficient with the reference measures) and BA (4%, 0.82). HPC provided less biased N estimates (-6%, 0.61) but underestimated BA (-8%, 0.83). HPC most accurately retrieved the diameter distribution. [Termes IGN] SardaigneRésumé : (Auteur) Wildland fires represent a major threat to Quercus suber L. ecosystems, which provide relevant socioeconomic and ecological services in the Mediterranean Basin. In this work, we analyzed recent wildland fire dynamics in cork oak woodlands along the fire-prone areas of Sardinia (Italy), Corsica (France) and Catalonia (Spain). We first characterized geographic extent and main characteristics of cork oak woodlands in these regions and analyzed how environmental (climate and elevation) and socioeconomic factors (population and land uses) vary in the areas covered by Quercus suber L. We then evaluated how wildfires affected cork oak stands and, by logistic regression analysis, to what extent wildfires in cork oak areas were related to the above set of environmental and anthropic explanatory variables. Results revealed specific variations across study areas in cork oak characteristics as well as in environmental and social factors. We highlighted the spatial and temporal patterns of wildfires on cork oak woodlands, in terms of extent, seasonality, frequency and main driving factors. In the period 2003–2015, the percentage of cork oak woodlands burned ranged from 3.42% in Corsica to 11.30% in Sardinia. A few large and severe wildfires accounted for most of the area burned in cork oak woodlands. The most significant predictive variable that explained the spatial variation in wildland fire ignitions inside or nearby cork oaks was summer precipitation, while the weight of other factors varied depending on the region. This study provides evidence on recent fire dynamics in cork oak woodlands and gives valuable information and insights for the implementation of forest management and planning strategies in the Mediterranean area. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Context : Forest typologies are useful for many purposes, including forest mapping, assessing habitat quality, studying forest dynamics, or defining sustainable management strategies. Quantitative typologies meant for forestry applications normally focus on horizontal and vertical structure of forest plots as main classification criteria, with species composition often playing a secondary role. The selection of relevant variables is often idiosyncratic and influenced by a priori expectations of the forest types to be distinguished.
Aims : We present a general framework to define forest typologies where the dissimilarity between forest stands is assessed using coefficients that integrate the information of species composition with the univariate distribution of tree diameters or heights or the bivariate distribution of tree diameters and heights.
Methods : We illustrate our proposal with the classification of forest inventory plots in Catalonia (NE Spain), comparing the results obtained using the bivariate distribution of diameters and heights to those obtained using either tree heights or tree diameters only.
Results : The number of subtypes obtained using the tree diameter distribution for the calculation of dissimilarity was often the same as those obtained from the tree height distribution or to those using the bivariate distribution. However, classifications obtained using the three approaches were often different in terms of forest plot membership.
Conclusion : The proposed classification framework is particularly suited to define forest typologies from forest inventory data and allows taking advantage of the bivariate distribution of diameters and heights if both variables are measured. It can provide support to the development of typologies in situations where fine-scale variability of topographic, climatic, and legacy management factors leads to fine-scale variation in forest structure and composition, including uneven-aged and mixed stands.Numéro de notice : A2019-183 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-019-0824-0 Date de publication en ligne : 12/04/2019 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-019-0824-0 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=92704

[Termes IGN] site archéologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Blending photogrammetric and Structure from Motion techniques with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) is a commonly used approach for the documentation and analysis of archaeological sites. Using the dense 3D point clouds generated from these techniques, two main photogrammetric products are created: orthophotos and Digital Surfaces Models (DSM). Depending on the UAV technology, the flight parameters, the topography and land cover of the flown area, DSMs and orthophotos are delivered with varying positional accuracies and output scales. In this paper, the positional accuracy and maximum allowable scale of these products generated by complete automation of flight mode and processing workflow are assessed. Moreover, three known International Mapping Standards (IMS) are validated using independent checkpoints, obtained by geodetic Global Navigation Satellite Systems receivers, in two Spanish study areas. The results show that accurate photogrammetric products adapted to the IMS can be successfully obtained by the automation of the photogrammetric workflow. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the past few decades, temperate forests have been negatively altered by numerous anthropogenic activities and by the impact of ongoing climate change. These changes may require management actions to help preserve some forest tree species. In this sense, highly-detailed knowledge of tree growth and survival across territorial and climatic gradients will be important for forest conservation. We developed a novel approach to determine the optimal zones of forest growth and expansion through climate suitability maps, using a dense tree-ring network of four forest species in Moncayo Natural Park and high-resolution climate data. Our results showed that the mixed-effects models developed using climate data and tree size were able to predict between 65 and 80% of growth variability along the climatic gradient. All studied species were influenced by climate, and the relationship between growth and climate significantly differed along the prevailing climate gradient. Moreover, the suitability maps showed that the current species distribution is limited, and their application may serve as a tool for adaptive management in forests subjected to climate change.
