[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (auteur) A shoreline change analysis has been carried out for the coastal stretch from Ennore creek to Karungali village located along the southeast coast of India. This 15 km-long coastal stretch had undergone significant changes such as erosion and accretion concerning infrastructure developments and leading to large impact on the livelihood of the community. To assess the shoreline changes, the analysis of multi-temporal satellite images has been carried out. A historical trend is established for the study period from 1991 to 2019. The analysis has been made in three timelines considering various developing activities. There was no significant coastal infrastructure development during 1991 to 1999; however, between 1999 and 2009, a major port, pier, and a groyne field were constructed. Additionally, a port was established between 2009 and 2019. Erosion was observed on the coast from Kattupalli to Karungali at a rate of −16.85 m/yr since 2009, while the coast on the south of Ennore port is accreting at the rate of +12.43 m/yr during the same period. The near-future projection using a linear regression model shows further erosion in the coast under similar conditions. The results of this study provide a baseline data for future anthropogenic activities along this coast. [Termes IGN] traitement d'imageIndex. décimale : 35.41 Applications de télédétection - végétation Résumé : (Editeur) The book contemplates different ways of approaching the study of vegetation as well as the type of indices to be used. However, all the works pursue the same objective: to know and interpret nature from different points of view, either through knowledge of nature in situ or the use of technology and mapping using satellite images. Chapters analyze the ecological parameters that affect vegetation, the species that make up plant communities, and the influence of humans on vegetation. Note de contenu : 1. [Termes IGN] roche métamorphiqueRésumé : (auteur) Metamorphic transformation rates are classically determined on decimetre-scale field samples and from laboratory experiments at smaller scales. Here we present a geophysical approach based on field data and joint geophysical–petrological modelling to quantify the average rate of metamorphic transformations at the 10–100-kilometre and million-year scales. The model simulates the eclogitization of Indian lower crust as it penetrates beneath southern Tibet. Metamorphic transformation of the lower crust is tracked by its densification, the effect of which is then compared to observed gravity anomalies. From the modelling we find that the Indian lower crust's overall densification requires a partially hydrated initial composition. Moreover, the modelled evolution of this densification compared to what is predicted by pressure–temperature–density grids is consistent with delayed, far-from-equilibrium metamorphism. The Indian lower crust descends underneath the Himalaya until beneath southern Tibet in a thermodynamically metastable state until the first dehydration reactions are reached. This observation is used to determine the average rate of metastable rock transformation to an eclogite facies assemblage, constrained at between ~6 × 10−9 and 5 × 10−7 g/cm2/year, and reaction affinity at 0.8–1.6 kJ/mol oxygen. Compared to field and laboratory data, this range of results matches the effective rates typically associated with regional metamorphism. This fit and correlation across the scales legitimates the use of transformation rates determined at small scales in large-scale geodynamic studies. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) This research paper proposes a new five-step protocol to enhance the result of existing cloud removal algorithms using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) daily snow cover products (SCPs). The study has been carried out for the upper Bhagirathi basin (up to Maneri Hydropower Project) located in the Western Himalaya. Gafurov and Bárdossy test employed to validate the performance of the proposed method, followed by comparing with the field observed snow cover duration (SCD) data. The result shows that the mean overall accuracy of the proposed method for cloud removal is about ∼95%. However, the cloud removal method by Gafurov and Bardossy also achieved similar mean overall accuracy but with the higher variability within the individual images as compared with the variability within the results obtained by the proposed method. SCD computed from cloud removed SCPs matched significantly with the field observed SCD for a point location, supporting the accuracy achieved by the cloud removal method. This study also examines the spatiotemporal variability of the snow cover in the study area during the past 18 years (2000–2018). During the observation period, no specific trend was observed for annual maximum snow cover, while yearly minimum snow cover in the basin showed an increasing trend since 2010. Seasonally, December and June month witnessed significant changes. December experienced a declining trend in snow cover between 3000–6000 m a.s.l. covering 88% of the basin area, whereas, June showed an increasing trend between 4500 to 6000 m (a.s.l.). This elevation range covers 61% of the basin area, including core 86% of the glacier area within the basin. September and October experienced the highest inter-annual snow cover variability. Maximum snow cover month of February and minimum snow cover month of August experienced the least variability. The present study suggests significant elevation-dependent increasing as well as the decreasing trend in the snow cover with seasonal contrast, which may affect the glaciers as well as the hydrological behavior of the basin. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The continuous monitoring of land surface movement over time is of paramount importance for assessing landslide triggering factors and mitigating landslide hazards. This research focuses on measuring horizontal and vertical surface displacement due to a devastating landslide event in the west-facing slope of the Rajamala Hills, induced by intense rainfall. The landslide occurred in Pettimudi, a tea-plantation village of the Idukki district in Kerala, India, on August 6–7, 2020. The persistent-scatterer synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PSInSAR ) technique, along with the Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS), was applied to investigate the land surface movement over time. A stack of 20 Sentinel-1A single-look complex images (19 interferograms) acquired in descending passes was used for PSInSAR processing. The line-of-sight (LOS ) displacement in long time series, and hence the average LOS velocity, was measured at each measurement-point location. The mean LOS velocity was decomposed into horizontal east–west (EW ) and vertical up–down velocity components. The results show that the mean LOS, EW, and up–down velocities in the study area, respectively, range from –18.76 to +11.88, –10.95 to +6.93, and –15.05 to +9.53 mm/y, and the LOS displacement ranges from –19.60 to +19.59 mm. The displacement values clearly indicate the instability of the terrain. The time-series LOS displacement trends derived from the applied PSInSAR technique are very useful for providing valuable inputs for disaster management and the development of disaster early-warning systems for the benefit of local residents.
