[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A systematic approach of understanding the terrain characteristics at the regional level and then narrowing down to the target areas for detailed mapping not only improves the quality of information but also saves considerably time, cost and manpower. For such activities, satellite-based remote sensing technology has become an efficient tool, due to its synoptic/multi-spectral/multi-temporaI coverage. In the present study, initially, a regional level natural resources assessment was carried out using coarse scale satellite data and then based on the results, a representative site was identified for detailed studies towards resources potential evaluation and to identify the areas undergoing calamities like forest fire. This multi stage study was carried out for a part of Madhya Pradesh, India. The regional set up of the study area was carried out on 1:250,000 scale using IRS LISS III standard FCC analog and digital data. A representative site named 'Gorna'sub-basin of the Son River, was selected for the detailed study at 1:50,000 scale, to mainly address the natural resources related problems of the region. The different thematic maps prepared were integrated in a GIS environment with suitable modeling for ground water prospect zone demarcation and forest fire risk zonation. Using the digital database of various themes, it could also be used appropriately for deriving other developmental plans. The result of the study demonstrate the utility of remote sensing technology for assessment of natural resources potentials at regional and local levels. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Land-cover classification of satellite images is an important task in analysis of remote sensing imagery. Segmentation is one of the widely used techniques in this regard. One of the important approaches for segmentation of an image is by clustering the pixels in the spectral domain, where pixels that share some common spectral property are put in the same group, or cluster. However, such spectral clustering completely ignores the spatial information contained in the pixels, which is often an important consideration for good segmentation of images. Moreover, the clustering algorithms often provide locally optimal solutions. In this paper, we propose to perform. image segmentation by a genetically guided unsupervised fuzzy clustering technique where some spatial information of the pixels is incorporated. Two ways of incorporating spatial information are suggested. The characteristic of this technique is that it is able to determine automatically the appropriate number of clusters without making any assumptions regarding the dataset. while attempting to provide globally near optimal solutions. In order to evolve the appropriate number of clusters, the chromosome encoding scheme is enhanced to incorporate the don't care symbol (#). Real-coded genetic algorithm with appropriatly defined operators is used. A cluster validity index is used as a measure of the value of the chromosomes. Results, both quantitative and qualitative are demonstrated for several images, including a satellite image of a part of the city of Mumbai. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports research to predict the distribution of An. minimus, a malaria vector in forest fringe areas using GIS to support precision surveys for malaria control. Because An. minimus is a forest-associated species, generalized thematic maps (1: 600 000) of forst cover, soil type, altitude, rainfall and temperature were used. Digitalization, overlaying, integration and analysis of thematic maps were done using Arc/Info 8.1 NT and Arc/View 3.2 (GIS, ESRI) software. GIS delineated favourable areas for An. minimus where the species is likely to be found, and precision survey can be conducted. Precision field surveys in selected locations of favourable/non-favourable areas were carried out. The species could be found in all location designated as a favourable area and was absent in non-favourable areas. In two districts, one where the species is reported to have disappeared in the early 1950s and the other where it was not reported in earlier surveys, GIS helped in precision surveys, and An. minimus was found. The technique can quickly cover vast and inaccessible areas and is easy to duplicate in other parts of the world to assist cost effective control of malaria. It can also delineate areas favourable for any species of flora and fauna to help precision surveys.
