[Termes IGN] image RVBRésumé : (Auteur) Independent components analysis (ICA) based methods for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image speckle reduction and ground object classification are studied. Several independent components can be extracted from polarimetric SAR images using ICA directly. The component with lowest speckle index is regarded as the scene after speckle reduction. The disadvantage of this method is that only one image is kept and most polarization information will be lost. In this paper, we use ICA-sparse-coding shrinkage (ICA-SPS) based speckle reduction method, which is implemented on each individual image and can keep polarization information. It is carried out on the combined channels obtained by Pauli-decomposition rather than original polarization channels in order to keep relative phase information among polarization channels and get better performance. After ICA-SPS, the effect of speckle suppression on SAR image classification can be compared favourably with other methods by combining the channels into a false colour image. At last, a new ICA-based classification method is presented. In this method, four independent components are separated by ICA from five polarization and combined channels. One of these independent components which includes little ground object information is regarded as speckle noise and therefore be discarded. The remaining three components can be treated as subordination coefficients of three kinds of targets. A classified image can be obtained based on the components. And by composing these three channels in RGB colour pattern, a false colour image can be constructed. [Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial distribution of surface roughness is very critical information for many application areas. Surface roughness is often characterized using statistical distribution. However, due to the huge complexity associated with spatial soil surfaces it is difficult to accurately characterize surface roughness over large areas using statistical distribution. Surface roughness influences SAR backscatter significantly and therefore for bare soil surfaces, surface roughness plays a critical role in determining the degree of depolarization of the SAR signal. In this paper, surface roughness is retrieved using multi-polarized Envisat-1 ASAR data. The depolarization ratio [ó°VH - ó°VV] has been found to be very sensitive to surface roughness. This study demonstrates an approach that can be used to retrieve quantitative surface roughness values from a space platform without making any assumptions regarding distribution of surface roughness on the ground. [Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry to the retrieval of geophysical parameters from yegetated scenes is based on simple direct models of such scenes. The first part of this paper presents an analysis of the correspon-dence between these simple models, namely, the random volume over ground and the oriented volume over ground (OVoG), and experimental data from samples of two agricultural crops (maize and rice) acquired in controlled conditions. Although an overall agreement between model and data is clear, some discrepancies have been found as a consequence of two assumptions in the model formulation: vertical homogeneity of the vegetation volume and absence of multiple scattering effects inside the volume. This paper presents the shape and location of the visible region of the experimental coherences on the complex plane and compares it with the feasible region predicted by the model. This comparison has also pointed out the low sensitivity of the direct model to extinction coefficients. In the second part, two different strategies for a complete inversion (i.e., estimation of all model parameters) of the OVoG model are proposed and compared, using the same data set. The first one is based on a combination of geometrical and numerical approaches (genetic algorithms) and the second one on a dual-baseline configuration. In all cases, ground topography is accurately estimated, with a maximum error of 10 cm. Vegetation height estimates are accurate up to 30 cm, with some bands and baseline configurations providing errors below 15 cm. However, results obtained for the extinction coefficients are not stable with frequency and exhibit high variability. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Recent analysis of a polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) velocity experiment has shown that azimuth ambiguities can provide useful information for the detection of moving targets with an across-track velocity component in PolSAR images using cross-polarization clutter cancellation. This paper examines this phenomenon using theoretical analysis and simulations and illustrates its application with experimental results. It is shown that, for reciprocal scatterers, the phase difference between HV and VH images is zero, whereas for HV and VH ambiguities, the phase difference is For land applications, clutter cancellation is essential for the detection of moving targets in PolSAR images. For maritime applications, it can be used to distinguish images from ambiguities. However, it is important to note that the underlying physical reasons for the performance of clutter cancellation are entirely different from ground moving target indication along-track interferometric SAR. It is also shown that cross-pol clutter cancellation is related to filtering of a double-rate-sampled single-channel SAR signal.
