L'exposé s'appuie largement sur la prise en compte des symétries des lois et des systèmes physiques, ainsi que sur l'écriture du bilan de l'énergie électromagnétique avec les termes d'échange et de création. Dans ce contexte, sont largement développées : la conductivité, la polarisation, l'aimantation, la supraconductivité, la dispersion, l'absorption et la propagation guidée.
Le livre s'adresse d'abord aux étudiants du premier cycle universitaire (première et deuxième années) et aux étudiants des classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles (mathématiques supérieures et mathématiques spéciales). Aussi comporte-t-il beaucoup d'exemples d'illustration et un nombre important d'exercices et problèmes résolus. Ensuite, en raison des développements sur les milieux matériels, il devrait intéresser les étudiants des licences de physique. Enfin, son découpage en leçons relativement autonomes le destine naturellement aux candidats aux concours de recrutement des professeurs de sciences physiques (CAPES, agrégations, ...).Note de contenu : 1.
