[Termes IGN] simulation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Polarimetric hyperspectral images can provide spectral, spatial, and polarimetric information of a scene, which are unique and comprehensive for remote sensing applications such as growth monitoring of crops, analysis of water quality, and geology mapping, etc. The researches on polarimetric hyperspectral imaging mechanism and on image characteristics are of great importance for further information extraction and utilization of the images. The purposes of this paper are to analyze the mechanism of polarimetric hyperspectral imaging and to model such a process. The outcome of the paper will help designers and users of a polarimetric hyperspectral imaging system to further understand the system and take full advantages of it. In this paper, a polarimetric hyperspectral imaging model is proposed, in which the influence of skylight on polarization is considered, and subpixel model, polarized reflectance models, and the classical fast canopy reflectance model are combined to model the vegetation canopy. Then, a simulated scene that includes a woodland area with low shrubbery and a road is obtained by using the imaging model. Experiments analyze and discuss the simulation condition and parameters of the imaging models, the uniqueness, and usefulness of the integration of polarimetric and spectral information. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The recently available space-borne SAR sensor, PALSAR, is more promising than its predecessor JERS-1 for biomass estimation because of its long wavelength (L-band), and its ability to provide data with different polarizations, varying incidence angles and higher spatial resolutions. This research investigates the potential of two-date dual polarization (HH and HV) SAR imagery for biomass estimation using different kinds of texture processing and different combinations of single and dual polarization ratios. The investigation is conducted in a mountainous, sub-tropical study area where biomass levels are far beyond the previously recognized saturation levels for L-band SAR images, and forest is a mixture of native and non-native species and plantations. We analyzed two-date SAR data with four steps of image processing, including raw data processing in various combinations, texture measurement parameters of HH and HV polarizations, texture measurement parameters of HH and HV together (both jointly and as a ratio), and a ratio of two-date texture parameters along with a single and two-date ratio. When the processed images were compared with ground data from 50 plots, the performance from raw data processing was low, with adjusted r2 = 0.22, but after all four processing steps, promising model accuracy (adjusted r2 = 0.90 and RMSE = 28.58 t/ha) and validation accuracy (using the Leave-One-Out-Cross-Validation) with adjusted r2 = 0.88 and RMSE = 35.69 t/ha, were achieved from the combination of single- and two-date polarization ratios of texture parameters. The strong performance achieved indicates that L-band dual-polarization (HH and HV) SAR data from PALSAR has great potential for biomass estimation, far beyond the previously reported L-band saturation point for biomass. This result is attributed to the synergy among texture processing and dual polarization on the one hand, which were able to average out random speckle noise, and the use of ratio instead of absolute quantities, due to its well known ability to reduce forest structural and terrain effects. The additional use of two-date SAR data with these processing techniques was able to add complementary information derived from biomass response in both wet and dry seasons. Thus overall, undesirable image noise and terrain effects were reduced. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we have investigated the relationship between the depolarization effects and the wintertime sea ice thickness in the landfast ice region where smooth thick first-year ice (FYI) and deformed old ice coexisted by using C- and X-band spaceborne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data (RADARSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X). We have found a strong correlation between the in situ sea ice thickness and the SAR-derived depolarization factors (copolarized correlation and cross-polarized ratio). The observed relationships have demonstrated not only a categorical difference between FYI and multiyear ice (MYI) but also a one-to-one continuity in the scatter plots, rather than being clustered. It clearly shows that the observed correlations are not merely from the categorical difference in scattering mechanism between FYI and MYI and that there might exist a one-to-one relationship between thickness and depolarization factors at least in our deformed ice case. This suggests that depolarization factors could be effective SAR parameters in the estimation of wintertime sea ice thickness. Numerical model simulations explained some portions of the correlation by employing multiple scattering on the sea ice surface and volume scattering within the low-density subsurface layer. [Termes IGN] récepteurRésumé : (Auteur) Geodetic VLBI delivers baseline length and Earth orientation parameter measurements, which offer the most viable and precise way to study Earth crustal and core dynamics and to support space navigation. The precision of these geodetic and astrometric measurements is degraded by instrumental errors of which polarization leakage is one of the larger. Its effect can be corrected in the data provided one knows the leakage characteristics of the stations. In this work I introduce the concept of polarization, why it needs to be considered in the geodetic analysis and present a VLBI experiment that measured the polarization leakage at 16 geodetic and VLBA stations over the frequency range 8212.99 MHz to 8932.99 MHz and 2225.99 MHz to 2365.99 MHz. I describe resulting polarization leakage measurements and the algorithm that was implemented to correct for their effect on the geodetic delay measurables. I applied the correction for polarization leakage to a routine geodetic VLBI experiment and check for the resulting improvement. Prom the measured leakage terms, one would expect polarization leakage to affect the group delay measurements by 0.5 ps to 7 ps, depending on the stations involved in the baseline. This proved to be below the statistical noise in a single VLBI experiment and so the improvement from the correction could not be detected. Polarization leakage was found, unexpectedly, not the dominant source of non-closing errors. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) We present a study of the polarimetric information content of dual-pol imaging modes and dual-pol imaging extended by polarimetric scattering models. We compare Wishart classifications both among the partial polarimetric datasets and against the full quad-pol dataset. Our emphasis is the inter-comparisons between the classification results based on dual-pol modes, compact polarimetric modes and scattering model extensions of the compact polarimetric modes. We primarily consider novel dual-pol modes, e.g. transmitting a circular polarization and receiving horizontal and vertical polarizations, and the pseudo-quad-pol data derived from polarimetric scattering models based on dual-pol data. We show that the overall classification accuracy of the pseudo-quad-pol data is essential the same as the classification accuracy obtained directly employing the underlying dual-pol imagery. We present a study of the polarimetric information content of dual-pol imaging modes and dual-pol imaging extended by polarimetric scattering models.
