[Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial distribution of surface roughness is very critical information for many application areas. Surface roughness is often characterized using statistical distribution. However, due to the huge complexity associated with spatial soil surfaces it is difficult to accurately characterize surface roughness over large areas using statistical distribution. Surface roughness influences SAR backscatter significantly and therefore for bare soil surfaces, surface roughness plays a critical role in determining the degree of depolarization of the SAR signal. In this paper, surface roughness is retrieved using multi-polarized Envisat-1 ASAR data. The depolarization ratio [ó°VH - ó°VV] has been found to be very sensitive to surface roughness. This study demonstrates an approach that can be used to retrieve quantitative surface roughness values from a space platform without making any assumptions regarding distribution of surface roughness on the ground. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) An accuracy assessment of two lidar-derived elevation datasets was conducted in areas of rugged terrain (average slope 26.6°). Data from 906 ground checkpoints in various land-cover types were collected in situ as reference points. Analysis of the accuracy of lidar-derived elevation as a function of several factors including terrain slope, terrain aspect, and land-cover types was conducted. This paper attempts to characterize vegetation information derived from lidar data based on variables such as canopy volume, local roughness of point clouds, point spacing of lidar ground returns, and vegetation angle. This information was used to evaluate the accuracy of elevation as a function of vegetation type. The experimental results revealed that the accuracy of elevation was considerably correlated with five factors: terrain slope, vegetation angle, canopy volume, local roughness of point clouds, and point spacing of lidar ground returns. The results show a linear relationship between the elevation accuracy and the combination of vegetation angle and the point spacing of ground returns (r2 > 0.9). The combination of vegetation angle and point spacing of ground returns explains a significant amount of the variability in elevation accuracy. Elevation accuracy varied with different vegetation types. The elevation accuracy was also linearly correlated with the product of the point spacing of ground returns and the tangent of the slope (r2 = 0.9). A greater product value implies a greater elevation error. In addition, with regard to terrain aspect, one dense dataset with extra cross-flight data revealed a lesser impact of aspect on elevation accuracy. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The soil moisture experiments held during June-July 2002 (SMEX02) at lowa demonstrated the potential of the L-band radiometer (PALS) in estimation of near surface soil moisture under dense vegetation canopy conditions. The L-band radar was also shown to be sensitive to near surface soil moisture. However, the spatial resolution of a typical satellite L-band radiometer is of the order of tens of kilometers, which is not sufficient to serve the full range of science needs for land surface hydrology and weather modeling applications. Disaggregation schemes for deriving subpixel estimates of soil moisture from radiometer data using higher resolution radar observations may provide the means for making available global soil moisture observations at a much finer scale. This paper presents a simple approach for estimation of change in soil moisture at a higher (radar) spatial resolution by combining L-band copolarized radar backscattering coefficients and L-band radiometric brightness temperatures. Sensitivity of AIRSAR L-band copolarized channels has been demonstrated by comparison with in situ soil moisture measurements as well as PALS brightness temperatures. The change estimation algorithm has been applied to coincident PALS and AIRSAR datasets acquired during the SMEX02 campaign. Using AIRSAR data aggregated to a 100-m resolution, PALS radiometer estimates of soil moisture change at a 400-m resolution have been disaggregated to 100-m resolution. The effect of surface roughness variability on the change estimation algorithm has been explained using integral equation model (IEM) simulations. A simulation experiment using synthetic data has been performed to analyze the performance of the algorithm over a region undergoing gradual wetting and dry down. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a theoretical-empirical model is developed for modelling the accuracy of a grid digital elevation model (DEM) linearly constructed from scattered sample data. The theoretical component integrates sample data accuracy in the model by means of the error-propagation theory. The empirical component seeks to model what is known as information loss, i.e. the sum of the error due purely to sampling the continuous terrain surface with a finite grid interval and the interpolation error. For this purpose, randomly spaced data points, supposed to be free of error, were converted into regularly gridded data points using triangulation with linear interpolation. Original sample data were collected with a 2 x 2 m sampling interval from eight different morphologies, from flat terrain to highly rugged terrain, applying digital photogrammetric methods to large-scale aerial stereo imagery (1 :5000). The DEM root mean square error was calculated by the true validation method over several sets of check points, obtaining the different sampling densities tested in this work. Several empirical models are calibrated and validated with the experimental data set by modelling the DEM accuracy by combining two variables such as sampling density and a descriptive attribute of terrain morphology. These empirical models presented a morphology based on the product of two potential functions, one related to the terrain roughness and another related to the sampling density. The terrain descriptors tested were average terrain slope, standard deviation of terrain slope, standard deviation of unitary vectors perpendicular to the topographic surface (SDUV), standard deviation of the difference in height between adjacent samples in the grid DEM (SDHD), and roughness estimation by first-, second-, or third-degree surface fitting error. The values obtained for those terrain descriptors were reasonably independent from the number and spatial distribution of the sample data. The models based on descriptors SDHD, SDUV, and standard deviation of slope provided a good fitting to the data observed (R 2> 0.94) in the calibration phase, model SDHD being the one that yielded the best results in validation. Therefore, it would be possible to establish a priori the optimum grid size required to generate or store a DEM of a particular accuracy, with the saving in computing time and file size that this would mean for the digital flow of the mapping information in GIS.
