[Termes IGN] texture du solRésumé : (auteur) Surface soil water content (SWC) is a major determinant of crop production, and accurately retrieving SWC plays a crucial role in effective water management. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) can acquire images with high temporal and spatial resolutions for SWC monitoring at the field scale. The objective of this study was to develop an algorithm to retrieve SWC by integrating soil texture into a vegetation index derived from UAS multispectral and thermal images. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and surface temperature (Ts) derived from the UAS multispectral and thermal images were employed to construct the temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI) using the trapezoid model. Soil texture was incorporated into the trapezoid model based on the relationship between soil texture and the lower and upper limits of SWC to form the texture temperature vegetation dryness index (TTVDI). For validation, 128 surface soil samples, 84 in 2019 and 44 in 2020, were collected to determine soil texture and gravimetric SWC. Based on the linear regression models, the TTVDI had better performance in estimating SWC compared to the TVDI, with an increase in R2 (coefficient of determination) by 14.5% and 14.9%, and a decrease in RMSE (root mean square error) by 46.1% and 10.8%, for the 2019 and 2020 samples, respectively. The application of the TTVDI model based on high-resolution multispectral and thermal UAS images has the potential to accurately and timely retrieve SWC at the field scale. [Termes IGN] zonage (urbanisme)Résumé : (auteur) Land Surface Temperature (LST) derived from space-borne Thermal-infrared (TIR) sensors is a key parameter of urban climate studies. Current studies are inefficient to capture the spatial and temporal variations of LST for only one snapshot adopted at one time. Focusing on the characterization of the spatial and temporal of LST variations at local scales, the latent patterns, and morphological characteristics are extracted in this study. Technically, sixteen MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) eight-day synthesized LST products (MYD11A2) in 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 are employed. First, the non-parametric Multi-Task Gaussian Process Model (MTGP) is used to extract the smooth and continuous Latent LST (LLST) patterns using one LST subset and its temporally adjacent images. Second, the Multi-Scale Shape Index (MSSI) is then applied to quantify the morphological characteristics at the optimal scale. Then, the LLST patterns and MSSI maps are clustered into multiple spatial categories. The specific clusters with the highest LLST and MSSI values are considered as local LLST hotspots. The Hotspots Weighted Mean Center (HSWMC) and standard deviation ellipse are adopted to further investigate the spatiotemporal change of hotspots orientation, direction, and trajectories. Results revealed that Impervious Surfaces (IS) composition is the most significant external forcing of local LST anomalies. The configuration factors (e.g., shape index, aggregation index) also have a noticeable local warming effect. This study represents a latent pattern and morphology-based framework for LST hotspots spatial and temporal variations characterization, catering to the zoning and grading strategies in urban planning. [Termes IGN] Mato GrossoRésumé : (auteur) Quantifying crop water consumption is essential for water resource management. The objective was to estimate the current evapotranspiration (ETa) of the cotton crop (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in the rainfed system, as well as the components of the radiation and energy balance in the Cerrado biome conditions using orbital images and the SEBAL algorithm and validate the estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) using FAO guidelines for crop coefficient (K c) of the cotton crop. Research was carried out in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in areas with three cotton cultivars. Images of the Operational Land Imager and Thermal Infrared Sensor sensors were used and ET estimation was made based on the SEBAL algorithm. Mean ETa in the cotton cycle was 3.5 mm dia−1 and the K c values ranged from 0.22 and 1.12, on average, in the smaller and larger leaf area, respectively. [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) Mitigating urban heat island (UHI) effects, especially under climate change, is necessary for the promotion of urban sustainability. Shade is one of the most important functions provided by urban trees for mitigating UHI. However, the cooling effect of tree shade has not been adequately investigated. In this study, we used a simple and straightforward method to quantify the spatial and temporal variation of tree shade and examined its effect on land surface temperature (LST). We used the hillshade function in a geographic information system to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of tree shade by integrating sun location and tree height. Relationships between shade and LST were then compared in two cities, Tampa, Florida and New York City (NYC), New York. We found that: (1) Hillshade function combining the sun location and tree height can accurately capture the spatial and temporal variation of tree shade; (2) Tree shade, particularly at 07:30, has significant cooling effect on LST in Tampa and NYC; and (3) Shade has a stronger cooling effect in Tampa than in NYC, which is most likely due to the differences in the ratio of tree canopy to impervious surface cover, the spatial arrangements of trees and buildings, and their relative heights. Comparing the cooling effects of tree shade in two cities, this study provides important insights for urban planners for UHI mitigation in different cities. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) Because of the large variety of planetary sensors and spacecraft already collecting data and with many new and improved sensors being planned for future missions, planetary science needs to integrate numerous multimodal image sources, and, as a consequence, accurate and robust registration algorithms are required. In this article, we develop a new framework for crater detection based on marked point processes (MPPs) that can be used for planetary image registration. MPPs were found to be effective for various object detection tasks in Earth observation, and a new MPP model is proposed here for detecting craters in planetary data. The resulting spatial features are exploited for registration, together with fitness functions based on the MPP energy, on the mean directed Hausdorff distance, and on the mutual information. Two different methods—one based on birth–death processes and region-of-interest analysis and the other based on graph cuts and decimated wavelets—are developed within the proposed framework. Experiments with a large set of images, including 13 thermal infrared and visible images of the Mars surface, 20 semisimulated multitemporal pairs of images of the Mars surface, and a real multitemporal image pair of the Lunar surface, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in terms of crater detection performance as well as for subpixel registration accuracy.
