[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) This paper discusses the development of simple multiple linear regression (MLR) models for developing seasonal forecasts of the annual minimum sea-ice extent in the Beaufort/Chukchi Seas, the Laptev/East Siberian Seas, the Kara/Barents Seas, and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago regions. The potential predictor data are based on mean monthly weighted indices of sea-ice concentration, multiyear sea-ice concentration, surface skin temperature, surface albedo, and downwelling longwave radiation flux at the surface. Predictions are developed based on data available in March (spring forecast), to coincide with the National American Ice Service's annual outlooks, and based on data available in June (summer forecast), which would provide a seasonal revision. The final regression equations retain one to three predictors, and each of the MLR models is superior to climatology. The r2 for the MLR models range from a low of 0.44 (for the spring forecast in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago) to a high of 0.80 (for the summer forecast in the Beaufort/Chukchi Seas). [Termes IGN] positionnement différentielRésumé : (Auteur) Use of Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry is demonstrated for control of a digital elevation model (DEM) that is synthesized from repeat-pass ERS-1 and 2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery using interferometric SAR (InSAR). Our study area is 15650 km2 of the Barrow, AK coastal plain adjacent to the Arctic Ocean; a vast expanse of tundra, lakes, and arctic wetlands of such low relief as to be nearly devoid of terrain features. The accuracy of the ICESat-derived elevation measurements is assessed by comparison with differential global positioning system (DGPS) data acquired along ICESat ground tracks. The ICESat-derived elevations have a mean accuracy, relative to the DGPS elevations, of 0.01 +0.18 m. ICESat-derived elevations on the Arctic coastal plain provide an excellent source for DEM control. We employ the ICESat-derived ground control points (GCPs) in two distinct InSAR processing steps: 1) selected points are used to perform baseline refinements, which improves the ERS-1 and 2 interferograms and 2) the ICESat-derived GCP position data (latitude, longitude, elevation) are then used as control in mosaicking multiple InSAR-derived OEMs. The resulting ICESat-controlled DEM has a mean accuracy of-1.11 + 6.3m relative to an independent standard, which is a commercial airborne InSAR-derived DEM having 0.5 m rms accuracy. This easily meets DTED-2 standards and suggests that DEMs derived using only ICESat altimetry for ground control would meet similar standards in other regions of low relief. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The effects of climate change on northern vegetation productivity need to be fully understood in order to reduce uncertainties in predicting vegetation distributions under different climate warming scenarios. Knowledge of the relationship between northern climate and vegetation productivity will also help provide a better understanding of changes in vegetation distributions as an indicator of climate change and variability. Vegetation productivity and biomass have been monitored using long-term satellite earth observations, mostly using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), as a cumulative indicator of all effects resulting from processes related to climate change, including changes in temperature, precipitation, and disturbance. In this paper, the investigation is focused on the short-term effect of temperature anomalies on arctic and tree-line transition vegetation productivity in both dry and humid regions of Canada. The analysis shows that several land-cover types composed mainly of trees and shrubs exhibit a significant increase in NDVI with higher-than-normal temperatures in the preceding 10-40-day period, while land-cover types consisting of lichen and moss growing on mostly barren surfaces show a significant NDVI decrease with increased temperature. These trends are consistent with results reported in plot-warming experiments in the north, which have shown that certain vegetation communities increase, while others decrease in cover fraction and biomass in response to warming. When land cover is grouped into increasing and decreasing NDVI with temperature and stratified by dry and humid regions of Canada, much of the dry region of northern Canada does not exhibit significant NDVI response to preceding temperature anomalies. It is expected that in the absence of disturbance or other limiting factors, an increased frequency of elevated temperature anomalies may eventually contribute to changes in vegetation biomass. A map of land-cover types that have the potential to increase in biomass with climate warming and those that are vulnerable to decline is presented. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes the first comparison of satellite radar and airborne laser altimetry over sea ice. In order to investigate the differences between measurements from the two different instruments, we explore the statistical properties of the data and determine reasonable scales in space and time at which to examine them. The resulting differences between the data sets show that the laser and the radar are reflecting from different surfaces and that the magnitude of the difference decreases with increasing surface air temperature. This suggests that the penetration depth of the radar signal, into the snow, varies with temperature. The results also show the potential for computing Arctic wide snow depth maps by combining measurements from laser and radar altimeters. [Termes IGN] zone polaireRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne single-polarization C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is widely used to gather information about the state of the sea ice cover in the polar regions. C-band is regarded as a reasonable choice for all-season monitoring capabilities. For specific mapping tasks, however, other frequency hands can be more suitable. In the first part of this paper, the summary of a literature study dealing with the utilization of L-band SAR imagery for sea ice monitoring is presented. Investigations reveal that if deformation features such as ice ridges, rubble fields, and brash ice are to be mapped, L-band radar is superior in a number of cases. The second part of this paper addresses the comparison of JERS-1 and ERS-1 SAR images that were acquired over sea ice east of Svalbard and along the east coast of Greenland. The effects of the different frequencies, polarizations, and incidence angles of the two SAR Systems are discussed. It is demonstrated that the images of both sensors complement one another in the analysis of ice conditions, resulting in a more detailed view of the sea ice cover state.
