[Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) To maintain sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for image reconstruction and image interpretation, conventional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems must trade off resolution and scene size. This paper proposes a new SAR mode of operation, which improves resolution while maintaining good SNR and a large scene size. It leverages the unique properties of dynamic metasurface antennas (MSAs) to subsample a large virtual beamwidth utilizing multiple small distinct antenna beams. Due to this parallelization in scene sampling, the constraints on the azimuth sampling rate can be relaxed while maintaining an aliasing-free cross range. Due to the versatile properties of MSAs and their cost effective manufacturing process, this paper proposes SAR systems, which can obtain high resolution images over a wide scene size with lower cost and complexity than competing approaches. Point-spread functions and proof-of-concept SAR simulations are shown to verify this approach. In addition, laboratory experiments using a commercial prototype MSA are presented, which show an improvement of 62% in cross-range resolution of the proposed approach, compared with the cross-range resolution of stripmap mode SAR with the same aperture. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we report results from the analysis of 3-D L-band airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquisitions acquired in March 2014 over the Mittelbergferner glacier, Austrian Alps, during the European Space Agency (ESA) campaign AlpTomoSAR. The campaign included coincident in situ measurements of snow and ice properties and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data acquired at 600 and 200 MHz over a total length of 18 km. Radar data were acquired by repeatedly flying an L-band SAR along an oval racetrack at an altitude of about 1300 m over the glacier, such that two data stacks from opposite views are obtained. Data from all passes were coherently combined to achieve 3-D resolution capabilities, resulting in the generation of 3-D tomographic SAR (TomoSAR) cubes, where each voxel represents L-band radar reflectivity from a particular location in the 3-D space at a spatial resolution on the order of meters. TomoSAR cubes were finally corrected to account for wave propagation velocity into the ice, which was a necessary step to associate the observed features with their geometrical location, hence enabling a direct comparison to GPR data. The TomoSAR cubes show the complexity of the glacier subsurface scattering. Most areas are characterized by surface scattering in proximity of the ice surface, plus a complex pattern of in-depth volumetric scattering beneath and scattering at the ice/bedrock interface. Various subsurface features observed in GPR transects at 200 MHz clearly showed up in TomoSAR sections as well, particularly firn bodies, crevasses, layer transitions, and bedrock reflection down to 50 m below the ice surface. [Termes IGN] trajectoire (véhicule non spatial)Résumé : (Auteur) The imagery of highly squinted synthetic aperture radar mounted on maneuvering platforms with nonlinear trajectory is a challenging task due to the existence of acceleration and the cross-range-dependent range migration and Doppler parameters. In order to accommodate these issues, a frequency-domain imaging algorithm based on tandem two-step nonlinear chirp scaling (TNCS) with small aperture is proposed. For the cross-range-dependent range cell migration (RCM) caused by the linear range walk correction and acceleration, the first-step NCS is introduced to suppress this dependence and realize the unified RCM correction. Based on the differences between full-aperture and small-aperture data in the cross-range processing, the second-step NCS is introduced in frequency domain to equalize the cross-range-dependent Doppler parameters, for cross-range processing is more sensitive to the cross-range dependence than range processing. Furthermore, a novel geometric correction method based on inverse projection is utilized to eliminate the negative effects caused by the imaging processing. Simulation results and real data processing are presented to validate the proposed approach.
