[Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The number of commercial space-based and airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems will increase in the next few years. The same is true for 3D Synthetic Aperture Radar systems (Interferometric SAR = IFSAR). This will result in affordable, new types of data. This data may either be used alone or to compliment images, for example from Landsat and SPOT. In some cases, the new data will solve serious data collection deficiencies. This paper describes properties of SAR/IFSAR data. The new data will also need new sophisticated data processing tools. Such a tool, based on an advanced Land Cover classification methodology, is presented. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) The Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Centre - OPOLIS in co-operation with NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Laboratory in Washington and ESA has conducted multidisciplinary studies on impacts of environment on agriculture with application of remote sensing data for several years. Research activities included vegetation monitoring using NOAA/AVHRR as well as high resolution ERS-2.SAR data. Recently, a successful attempt was launched to use low resolution AVHRR data for early drought detection in Poland. NOAA images have been used to derive Temperature Condition Index (TCI) characterising the status of crop development. TCI index represents the relation between actual weekly value of temperature and the temperature, which occurred during both favourable and stress crop growing conditions in the last decade. The differences in TCI values and their spatial distribution for the whole country give information where and when the drought has started and how intensive it was. The research also demonstrated that backscattering coefficient calculated from ERS-1/2.SAR data characterises soil moisture condition and can be used for drought detection. Our research has been conducted for cereals and validated through detailed ground measurements. This paper presents the results obtained for 1992 (drought conditions), 1994 (mean moisture conditions) and 1998 (favourable moisture conditions) for cereals. [Termes IGN] radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The presence of speckle in SAR images reduces the ability to perceive fine details and rules out a visual perception of systematic structures that would make it possible to describe a specific feature of the earth's surface and makes the radiometric and textural aspects less efficient for class discrimination. Many adaptive filters have been developed for speckle reduction and they are based on a test related to the local coefficient of variation of the observed image, which describes the heterogeneity of the scene. In this paper, the well-known non linear adaptive filters such as Frost, Wu, and Nezry filters are presented, and considering the limitations of the analysed filters and the good results achieved using the ratio edge extraction, a modified adaptive speckle filter has been implemented based on both geometrical and statistical properties (coefficient of variation) of the local area. The procedure has depended on several parameters such as window size, the width of the linear features, the thresholds, the values of Cu (coefficient of variation of multiplicative noise) and Cmax(the maximum value of the distribution of Cu). The successful use of the ratio edge and line detectors has been employed in adaptive speckle filter, in order to apply the enhanced frost version in every window or subwindow selected. As was expected, the new filter performs better, i.e., we can achieve very good smoothing in the homogeneous areas preserving, at the same time, structural and textural information, edges, linear features. The filters are tested on a ERS-1 SAR image corresponding to an area of southern Algeria called Laghouat. The good results obtained and the improvements with respect to the classic algorithms are presented and discussed.
