[Termes IGN] système d'information historiqueRésumé : (auteur) Ottoman cartographic materials are important sources of information on 19th and early 20th-century Greater Syria. However, large portions of this corpus have yet to be examined. This study explores a rare mid-19th-century Ottoman map of the Province of Saida preserved in the Ottoman Archive in Istanbul. It lists travel times between villages, towns, and administrative centers in Greater Syria under Ottoman rule, and shows the network of routes connecting these localities. Using an historical GIS approach, we evaluated the characteristics of the map and its cartographical accuracy and merits. The network of routes on the map is compared to route reconstructions based on least-cost-path principles. The discussion focuses on the historical context of the map and the ways in which it reflects the strength of Ottoman rule and familiarity with Greater Syria at the time. [Termes IGN] ontologieRésumé : (auteur) Integrating heterogeneous geospatial data sources is important in various domains like smart cities, urban planning and governance, but remains a challenging research problem. In particular, the production of high-quality integrated data from multiple sources requires an understanding of their respective characteristics and a systematic assessment of the consistency within and between the data sources. In order to perform the assessment, the data has to be placed on a common ground. However, in practice, heterogeneous geodata are often provided in diverse formats and organized in significantly different structures. In this work, we propose a framework that uses an ontology-based approach to overcome the heterogeneity by means of a domain ontology, so that consistency rules can be evaluated at the unified ontological representation of the data sources. In our case study, we use open governmental data from Open Data Portals (ODPs) and volunteered geographic information from OpenStreetMap (OSM) as two test data sources in the area of the province of South Tyrol, Italy. Our preliminary experiment shows that the approach is effective in detecting inconsistencies within and between ODP and OSM data. These findings provide valuable insights for a better combined usage of these datasets. Accurate information over burned areas (BA) is essential for governments and communities to prioritize recovery actions. Prior research over the past decades has established the potentials and limitations of space-borne earth observation for mapping BA over large geographic areas at various scales. The operational deployment of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 constellations significantly improved the quality and quantity of the imagery from the microwave (C-band) and optical regions on the spectrum. Based on that, this study set to investigate whether the existing coarse BA products can be further improved by the synergy of optical surface reflectance (SR), radar backscatter coefficient (BS), and/or radar interferometric coherence (COR) data with higher spatial resolutions. A Siamese Self-Attention (SSA) classification strategy is proposed for the multi-sensor BA mapping and a multi-source dataset is constructed at the object level for the training and testing. Results are analyzed by test sites, feature sources, and classification strategies to appraise the improvements achieved by the proposed method. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) This study focuses on tackling the challenge of building mapping in multi-modal remote sensing data by proposing a novel, deep superpixel-wise convolutional neural network called DeepQuantized-Net, plus a new red, green, blue (RGB)-depth data set named IND. DeepQuantized-Net incorporated two practical ideas in segmentation: first, improving the object pattern with the exploitation of superpixels instead of pixels, as the imaging unit in DeepQuantized-Net. Second, the reduction of computational cost. The generated data set includes 294 RGB-depth images (256 training images and 38 test images) from different locations in the state of Indiana in the U.S., with 1024 × 1024 pixels and a spatial resolution of 0.5 ftthat covers different cities. The experimental results using the IND data set demonstrates the mean F1 scores and the average Intersection over Union scores could increase by approximately 7.0% and 7.2% compared to other methods, respectively. We contend not only that cartography is a coherent and distinctive discipline (although we do consider the semantics involved in, and rationale for, referring to it by that name), but that human society cannot function without maps. The major reason for this is that each map is created for a human or societal purpose – and this purpose defines the nature and utility of the map. The role of a map defines the very nature of a map itself, and we reflect on the creation, functionality, and success of mapping activity. This leads us to conclude with pointers to functional definition of the map.
