[Termes IGN] signal GPSRésumé : (Auteur) In 1998 the United States formally annouced a modernization effort to extend the capabilities of the Global Positioning System (GPS) : GPS Modernization will add two new signals and increased signal power for civilian users, as well as advanced features and new signals for military use. The initiative is expected to offer significant benefits for surveyors, mappers and contruction workers, as well as other civilian application including aviation, marine and automobile navigation, agriculture and asset management. Increased accuracy and robustness of measurements, enhanced productivity and the potential for extensive advances in reciever technology lie just ahead. Focusing on civilian use, the authors give an overview of this government-funded GPS Modernization programme and discuss its impact on the surveying profession. [Termes IGN] modèle d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The performance of any navigation systemsis characterized by its accuracy, availability, continuity, and integrity. From a safety point of view, integrity is arguably the most important factor. Without some assurance of a system's integrity, we have no way of knowing whether the navigation information we receive is correct : How are we to know whether a navigation system is actually achieving its advertised accuracy and not misleading us with faulty information ? Although standalone GPS provides a certain level of integrity through self-monitoring in the satellites and signal monitoring by the GPS control segment, it is insufficient for aircraft conducting precision approaches to airport runways. The wide and local area augmentation systems offer a much higher level of integrity than standalone GPS. This is achieved, in part, by the aircraft receiver computing a high-confidence upper bound on its position error from the data it receives from the augmentation signals. As long as the computed error bound is below a preset value, safe navigation is assured with an extremely high level of confidence. However, the error bound is based on the assumption that the errors are distributed according to a normal or Gaussian probability distribution. Unfortunately, the positions determined using corrections from the augmentation systems have errors which do not quite follow such a distribution. The current approach to handling this phenomenon is to overbound the errors with a protection limit which safely accounts for the occasional larger than "normal" errors. Here, is discussed a promising alternative integrity monitoring technique that needs no assumption on the error distribution - a technique that will see a marriage of GPS with the eagerly anticipated Galileo system. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Geometric correction accuracy of IRS-1D panchromatic imagery was investigated using GPS- and 1:25000 scale topographic map-derived control points. The differentially corrected GPS-derived coordinates provided markedly more accurate results than did uncorrected handheld GPS and map-derived GCPs. The rms error value of differentially corrected GPS-derived control points based on second-degree polynomial was in the order of + 3 m. Geometric corrections made with second-degree polynomials, using both the map- and uncorrected handheld GPS-derived control points, yielded rms error values in the order of + 5 m. The results revealed that the uncorrected handheld GPS-derived control points can be a valuable alternative to planimetric control for geometric correction of IRS-1C/D panchromatic imagery with one-pixel size accuracy.
