Thirty individually authored papers concentrate on the following topics : scanning ; aerial triangulation ; automatic derivation of a DTM ; orthophoto ; digital plotting ; logistics and integration of the system ; and financial aspects. Discussion revealed the efficiency of digital aerial triangulation and the advantages of incorporating matching techniques for the derivation of digital terrain models. Costs for orthophotos could be considerably reduced if the user concentrated on the application of digital data. The proceedings concluded that most mapping organisations use different equipment from vendors to meet their requirements. The exchange of digital data appears to be very cumbersome in such a platform environment, thus standards for image formats, transformation parameters and the orientation elements would be necessary. It contains a complete overview of this important photogrammetric topic, something which does not exist to date. Besides documenting the state-of-the-art of DPWS, it describes the design of a universal DPWS for the acquisition and revision of topographic data. This design is geared towards practical applications. At the same time current trends in research and development of digital photogram-metry are emphasized. The potential of the universal DPWS is demonstrated for a number of tasks. The universal DPWS is also compared to the analytical plotter - today's standard instrument for photogrammetric data acquisition, to commercially available DPWS, and to representative research and development projects of the computer vision community.
The design of the universal DPWS is based on an analysis of the photogrammetric processing chain for digital imagery. It is also strongly influenced by scientific approaches for automated image analysis and by the results of intensive discussions with various DPWS companies. The universal DPWS design includes the following features:
- interactive processing with semi-automatic and automatic data collection modules,
- mono and stereo viewing,
- mono and stereo measurement with subpixel accuracy,
- multi image processing in all steps,
- standard hardware components wherever possible,
- modular software design.
The possibilities of automatic processing of photogrammetric imagery are demonstrated with three examples from the areas of image compression, automatic relative orientation, and automatic generation of a digital terrain model (DTM). Image compression has hardly been investigated within photogrammetry. However, due to the rapidly growing data volume its importance is steadily increasing. In this work the impact of lossy image compression onto the accuracy of subsequently generated photogrammetric products is quantitatively examined' for the first time. It is shown that for black and white images a compression rate of 5 can already lead to errors which are comparable in size to the measurement accuracy. For automatic relative orientation a new algorithm is presented which is based on hierarchical feature matching. The results of various tests confirm that the algorithm has reached an operational stage in terms of being able to handle a large variety of images, and in terms of accuracy, robustness, and computational speed. The automatic DTM generation is based on global image matching in object space and constitutes the first controlled test of this rather general approach using real imagery.
A comparison between the analytical plotter and the DPWS reveals clear advantages on the side of the DPWS despite some technological drawbacks. These advantages ensure that the DPWS will become the major photogrammetric data acquisition system in the near future. While reviewing the capabilities of currently available commercial DPWS it is shown that they operate on the cutting edge of today's technology. Most of them were developed with concepts of analytical photogrammetry in mind, and thus do not take full advantage of the additional possibilities provided by the digital imagery. This is especially true for multi image processing and semi-automatic data collection. Therefore, the commercial systems have to be considered as prototypes of the universal DPWS. Two American projects, RADIUS (Research and development for image understanding systems) and IUE (image understanding environment), and their connection to DPWS are discussed next.
