[Termes IGN] sous-boisRésumé : (auteur) Image matching is emerging as a compelling alternative to airborne laser scanning (ALS) as a data source for forest inventory and management. There is currently an open discussion in the forest inventory community about whether, and to what extent, the new method can be applied to practical inventory campaigns. This paper aims to contribute to this discussion by comparing two different image matching algorithms (Semi-Global Matching [SGM] and Next-Generation Automatic Terrain Extraction [NGATE]) and ALS in a typical managed boreal forest environment in southern Finland. Spectral features from unrectified aerial images were included in the modeling and the potential of image matching in areas without a high resolution digital terrain model (DTM) was also explored. Plot level predictions for total volume, stem number, basal area, height of basal area median tree and diameter of basal area median tree were modeled using an area-based approach. Plot level dominant tree species were predicted using a random forest algorithm, also using an area-based approach. The statistical difference between the error rates from different datasets was evaluated using a bootstrap method. Results showed that ALS outperformed image matching with every forest attribute, even when a high resolution DTM was used for height normalization and spectral information from images was included. Dominant tree species classification with image matching achieved accuracy levels similar to ALS regardless of the resolution of the DTM when spectral metrics were used. Neither of the image matching algorithms consistently outperformed the other, but there were noticeably different error rates depending on the parameter configuration, spectral band, resolution of DTM, or response variable. This study showed that image matching provides reasonable point cloud data for forest inventory purposes, especially when a high resolution DTM is available and information from the understory is redundant. [Termes IGN] résolution multipleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, the authors investigate the statistical matching of the panchromatic (Pan) image to the multispectral (MS) bands, also known as the histogram matching, for the two main classes of pansharpening methods, i.e., those based on component substitution (CS) or spectral methods and those based on multiresolution analysis (MRA) or spatial methods. Also, hybrid methods combining CS with MRA, like the widespread additive wavelet luminance proportional (AWLP), are investigated. It is shown that all spectral, spatial, and hybrid methods must perform a dynamics matching of the enhancing Pan to the individual MS bands for MRA or a combination of them (the component that shall be substituted) for CS. For hybrid methods, the problem is more complex and both types of histogram matching may be suitable. Such an intersensor balance may be either explicit or implicitly performed by the detail-injection model, e.g., the popular projective and multiplicative injection models. An experimental setup exploiting IKONOS and WorldView-2 data sets demonstrates that a correct histogram matching is the key to attain extra performance from established methods. As a first result of this paper, the AWLP method has been revisited and its performance significantly improved by simply performing the histogram matching of Pan to the individual MS bands, rather than to the intensity component, thereby losing the original proportionality feature. [Termes IGN] orthoimageRésumé : (Auteur) Using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) drone with an attached non-metric camera has become a popular low-cost approach for collecting geospatial data. A well-georeferenced orthoimage is a fundamental product for geomatics professionals. To achieve high positioning accuracy of orthoimages, precise sensor position and orientation data, or a number of ground control points (GCPs), are often required. Alternatively, image registration is a solution for improving the accuracy of a UAV orthoimage, as long as a historical reference image is available. This study proposes a registration scheme, including an Accelerated Binary Robust Invariant Scalable Keypoints (ABRISK) algorithm and spatial analysis of corresponding control points for image registration. To determine a match between two input images, feature descriptors from one image are compared with those from another image. A “Sorting Ring” is used to filter out uncorrected feature pairs as early as possible in the stage of matching feature points, to speed up the matching process. The results demonstrate that the proposed ABRISK approach outperforms the vector-based Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) approach where radiometric variations exist. ABRISK is 19.2 times and 312 times faster than SIFT for image sizes of 1000 × 1000 pixels and 4000 × 4000 pixels, respectively. ABRISK is 4.7 times faster than Binary Robust Invariant Scalable Keypoints (BRISK). Furthermore, the positional accuracy of the UAV orthoimage after applying the proposed image registration scheme is improved by an average of root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.58 m for six test orthoimages whose spatial resolutions vary from 6.7 cm to 10.7 cm. [Termes IGN] précision des mesuresRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an automatic workflow for measuring natural ground control points (GCPs) in aerial images. The approach is based on the acquisition of multi-scale fisheye vertical terrestrial images over distinguishable areas to automatically generate georeferenced image patches. These are matched with aerial images using correspondence techniques and then used as ground control. The technique was assessed using a bundle block adjustment, indicating an accuracy based on check points of approximately 1/5 of the ground sample distance (GSD) in planimetry and 1 GSD in elevation. Automatic GCP measurements thus improved the final accuracy in comparison with manual measurement. [Termes IGN] optimisation (mathématiques)Résumé : (auteur) The newly proposed correlation filter based trackers can achieve appealing performance despite their great simplicity and superior speed. However, this kind of object trackers is not born with scale and aspect ratio adaptability, thus resulting in suboptimal tracking accuracy. To tackle this problem, this paper integrates the class-agnostic detection proposal method, which is widely adopted in object detection area, into a correlation filter tracker. In the tracker part, optimizations such as feature integration, robust model updating and proposal rejection are applied for efficient integration. As for proposal generation, through integrating and comparing four detection proposal generators along with two baseline methods, the quality of detection proposals is found to have considerable influence on tracking accuracy. Therefore, as the most promising proposal generator, EdgeBoxes is chosen and further enhanced with background suppression. Evaluations are mainly performed on a challenging 50-sequence dataset (OTB50) and its two subsets, 28 sequences with significant scale variation and 14 sequences with obvious aspect ratio change. Among the trackers equipped with different proposal generators, state-of-the-art trackers and existing correlation filter variants, our proposed tracker reports the highest accuracy while running efficiently at an average speed of 20.4 frames per second. Additionally, numerical performance analysis in per-sequence manner and experiment results on VOT2014 dataset are also presented to enable deeper insights into our approach.
