[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) This contribution proposes a workflow for a completely automatic orientation of historical terrestrial urban images. Automatic structure from motion (SfM) software packages often fail when applied to historical image pairs due to large radiometric and geometric differences causing challenges with feature extraction and reliable matching. As an innovative initialising step, the proposed method uses the neural network D2-Net for feature extraction and Lowe’s mutual nearest neighbour matcher. The principal distance for every camera is estimated using vanishing point detection. The results were compared to three state-of-the-art SfM workflows (Agisoft Metashape, Meshroom and COLMAP) with the proposed workflow outperforming the other SfM tools. The resulting camera orientation data are planned to be imported into a web and virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) application for the purpose of knowledge transfer in cultural heritage. [Termes IGN] triangulationRésumé : (auteur) This paper outlines a new framework for the calibration of optical instruments, in particular smartphone cameras, using highly redundant circular black-and-white target fields. New methods were introduced for (i) matching targets between images; (ii) adjusting the systematic eccentricity error of target centres; and (iii) iteratively improving the calibration solution through a free-network self-calibrating bundle adjustment. The proposed method effectively matched circular targets in 270 smartphone images, taken within a calibration laboratory, with robustness to type II errors (false negatives). The proposed eccentricity adjustment, which requires only camera projective matrices from two views, behaved comparably to available closed-form solutions, which require additional a priori object-space target information. Finally, specifically for the case of mobile devices, the calibration parameters obtained using the framework were found to be superior compared to in situ calibration for estimating the 3D reconstructed radius of a mechanical pipe (approximately 45% improvement on average). [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Visual localization is a useful alternative to standard localization techniques. It works by utilizing cameras. In a typical scenario, features are extracted from captured images and compared with geo-referenced databases. Location information is then inferred from the matching results. Conventional schemes mainly use low-level visual features. These approaches offer good accuracy but suffer from scalability issues. In order to assist localization in large urban areas, this work explores a different path by utilizing high-level semantic information. It is found that object information in a street view can facilitate localization. A novel descriptor scheme called “semantic signature” is proposed to summarize this information. A semantic signature consists of type and angle information of visible objects at a spatial location. Several metrics and protocols are proposed for signature comparison and retrieval. They illustrate different trade-offs between accuracy and complexity. Extensive simulation results confirm the potential of the proposed scheme in large-scale applications. This paper is an extended version of a conference paper in CBMI’18. A more efficient retrieval protocol is presented with additional experiment results. We propose to process the video stream acquired with a mobile phone to register the real buildings with a 3D city model. We first combine the data acquired with the device’s instruments to estimate a rough user’s pose in the world coordinates system. Then, we use this estimated pose to generate a synthetic image of the user’s view from which we calculate a virtual skyline. In parallel, we extract a real skyline from the real-time video stream. Finally, we match these real and virtual skylines to correct the user’s pose (six degrees of freedom) and thus generate a more realistic augmented reality view. We evaluate the precision and the processing time of our approach using 2D and 3D registration algorithms, as well as with a novel double 2D strategy. [Termes IGN] SPARQLRésumé : (auteur) Stop-and-move semantic trajectories are segmented trajectories where the stops and moves are semantically enriched with additional data. A query language for semantic trajectory datasets has to include selectors for stops or moves based on their enrichments and sequence expressions that define how to match the results of selectors with the sequence the semantic trajectory defines. This article addresses the problem of searching semantic trajectories, using stop-and-move sequence expressions. The article first proposes a formal framework to define semantic trajectories and introduces stop-and-move sequence expressions, with well-defined syntax and semantics, which act as an expressive query language for semantic trajectories. Then, it describes a concrete semantic trajectory model in RDF, defines SPARQL stop-and-move sequence expressions and discusses strategies to compile such expressions into SPARQL queries. Lastly, the article specifies user-friendly keyword search expressions over semantic trajectories based on the use of keywords to specify stop-and-move queries, and the adoption of terms with predefined semantics to compose sequence expressions. It then shows how to compile such keyword search expressions into SPARQL queries. Finally, it provides a proof-of-concept experiment over a semantic trajectory dataset constructed with user-generated content from Flickr, combined with Wikipedia data.
