[Termes IGN] système à base de connaissancesRésumé : (Auteur) When different spatial databases are combined, an important issue is the identification of inconsistencies between data. Quite often, representations of the same geographical entities in databases are different and reflect different points of view. In order to fully take advantage of these differences when object instances are associated, a key issue is to determine whether the differences are normal, i.e. explained by the database specifications, or if they are due to erroneous or outdated data in one database. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based approach to partially automate the consistency assessment between multiple representations of data. The inconsistency detection is viewed as a knowledge-acquisition problem, the source of knowledge being the data. The consistency assessment is carried out by applying a proposed method called MECO. This method is itself parameterized by some domain knowledge obtained from a second method called MACO. MACO supports two approaches (direct or indirect) to perform the knowledge acquisition using data-mining techniques. In particular, a supervised learning approach is defined to automate the knowledge acquisition so as to drastically reduce the human-domain expert's work. Thanks to this approach, the knowledge-acquisition process is sped up and less expert-dependent. Training examples are obtained automatically upon completion of the spatial data matching. Knowledge extraction from data following this bottom-up approach is particularly useful, since the database specifications are generally complex, difficult to analyse, and manually encoded. Such a data-driven process also sheds some light on the gap between textual specifications and those actually used to produce the data. The methodology is illustrated and experimentally validated by comparing geometrical representations and attribute values of different vector spatial databases. The advantages and limits of such partially automatic approaches are discussed, and some future works are suggested. [Termes IGN] simulation PleiadesRésumé : (Auteur) Among all the issues involved in Geographic Information Science, automating the update of 2D building databases is a crucial and challenging issue. Such an update usually starts out with a manual change detection process. The main goal of this paper is to present a new method to automate the detection of changes in a 2D building database, starting from satellite images. The workflow of our approach is divided into 2 phases. Primitives, extracted from multiple images or from a correlation Digital Surface Model (DSM), are firstly collected for each building and matched with primitives derived from the existing database to achieve a final decision about acceptance or rejection. A specific algorithm, based on the DSM and a computed Digital Terrain Model (DTM), is subsequently used to extract new buildings. The method is here introduced and tested in two test areas, very different regarding the land use and topography. The out-comes of the method are assessed and show the good performance of our system, especially in terms of completeness, robustness and transferability. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Very high resolution satellite images provide valuable information to researchers. Among these, urban-area boundaries and building locations play crucial roles. For a human expert, manually extracting this valuable information is tedious. One possible solution to extract this information is using automated techniques. Unfortunately, the solution is not straightforward if standard image processing and pattern recognition techniques are used. Therefore, to detect the urban area and buildings in satellite images, we propose the use of scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) and graph theoretical tools. SIFT keypoints are powerful in detecting objects under various imaging conditions. However, SIFT is not sufficient for detecting urban areas and buildings alone. Therefore, we formalize the problem in terms of graph theory. In forming the graph, we represent each keypoint as a vertex of the graph. The unary and binary relationships between these vertices (such as spatial distance and intensity values) lead to the edges of the graph. Based on this formalism, we extract the urban area using a novel multiple subgraph matching method. Then, we extract separate buildings in the urban area using a novel graph cut method. We form a diverse and representative test set using panchromatic 1-m-resolution Ikonos imagery. By extensive testings, we report very promising results on automatically detecting urban areas and buildings. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution (HR) remote-sensing images allow us to access new kinds of information. Classical techniques for image analysis, such as pixel-based classifications or region-based segmentations, do not allow to fully exploit the richness of this kind of images. Indeed, for many applications, we are interested in complex objects which can only be identified and analyzed by studying the relationships between the elementary objects which compose them. In this paper, the use of a spatial reasoning technique called region connection calculus for the analysis of HR remote-sensing images is presented. A graph-based representation of the spatial relationships between the regions of an image is used within a graph-matching procedure in order to implement an object detection algorithm.
