[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Recent research has shown that utilizing the spectral-spatial information can improve the performance of hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. Since HSI is a 3-D cube datum, 3-D spatial filtering becomes a simple and effective method for extracting the spectral-spatial information. In this paper, we propose a 3-D scattering wavelet transform, which filters the HSI cube data with a cascade of wavelet decompositions, complex modulus, and local weighted averaging. The scattering feature can adequately capture the spectral-spatial information for classification. In the classification step, a support vector machine based on Gaussian kernel is used as a classifier due to its capability to deal with high-dimensional data. Our method is fully evaluated on four classic HSIs, i.e., Indian Pines, Pavia University, Botswana, and Kennedy Space Center. The classification results show that our method achieves as high as 94.46%, 99.30%, 97.57%, and 95.20% accuracies, respectively, when only 5% of the total samples per class is labeled. Two requirements on PolSAR speckle filtering are proposed: 1) speckle filtering should be applied to distributed media only, and strong hard targets should be kept unfiltered; and 2) scattering mechanism preservation should be taken into consideration, in addition to speckle reduction. The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to propose an effective algorithm that is an extension of the improved sigma filter developed for single-polarization SAR; and 2) to investigate speckle characteristics and the need for speckle filtering for very high resolution (decimeter) PolSAR data. The proposed filter was specifically developed to account for the aforementioned two requirements. Its effectiveness is demonstrated with Jet Propulsion Laboratory airborne synthetic aperture radar data, and comparisons are made with a boxcar filter, the refined Lee filter, and a Wishart-based nonlocal filter. For very high resolution PolSAR systems, such as the German Aerospace Center F-SAR and Japanese Pi-SAR2, with decimeter spatial resolution, we found that the complex Wishart distribution is still valid to describe PolSAR speckle characteristics of distributed media and that speckle filtering may be needed depending on the size of objects to be analyzed. F-SAR X-band data with 25-cm resolution is used for illustration. [Termes IGN] traitement de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Large footprint waveform LiDAR sensors have been widely used for numerous airborne studies. Ground peak identification in a large footprint waveform is a significant bottleneck in exploring full usage of the waveform datasets. In the current study, an accurate and computationally efficient algorithm was developed for ground peak identification, called Filtering and Clustering Algorithm (FICA). The method was evaluated on Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS) waveform datasets acquired over Central NY. FICA incorporates a set of multi-scale second derivative filters and a k-means clustering algorithm in order to avoid detecting false ground peaks. FICA was tested in five different land cover types (deciduous trees, coniferous trees, shrub, grass and developed area) and showed more accurate results when compared to existing algorithms. More specifically, compared with Gaussian decomposition, the RMSE ground peak identification by FICA was 2.82 m (5.29 m for GD) in deciduous plots, 3.25 m (4.57 m for GD) in coniferous plots, 2.63 m (2.83 m for GD) in shrub plots, 0.82 m (0.93 m for GD) in grass plots, and 0.70 m (0.51 m for GD) in plots of developed areas. FICA performance was also relatively consistent under various slope and canopy coverage (CC) conditions. In addition, FICA showed better computational efficiency compared to existing methods. FICA’s major computational and accuracy advantage is a result of the adopted multi-scale signal processing procedures that concentrate on local portions of the signal as opposed to the Gaussian decomposition that uses a curve-fitting strategy applied in the entire signal. The FICA algorithm is a good candidate for large-scale implementation on future space-borne waveform LiDAR sensors. [Termes IGN] image hyperspectraleRésumé : (Auteur) Feature extraction is known to be an effective way in both reducing computational complexity and increasing accuracy of hyperspectral image classification. In this paper, a simple yet quite powerful feature extraction method based on image fusion and recursive filtering (IFRF) is proposed. First, the hyperspectral image is partitioned into multiple subsets of adjacent hyperspectral bands. Then, the bands in each subset are fused together by averaging, which is one of the simplest image fusion methods. Finally, the fused bands are processed with transform domain recursive filtering to get the resulting features for classification. Experiments are performed on different hyperspectral images, with the support vector machines (SVMs) serving as the classifier. By using the proposed method, the accuracy of the SVM classifier can be improved significantly. Furthermore, compared with other hyperspectral classification methods, the proposed IFRF method shows outstanding performance in terms of classification accuracy and computational efficiency.
