[Termes IGN] représentation mentale spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) PodWalks are a new kind of Podcasts where virtual narrators guide users through real-world spaces. PodWalks can increase a user's appreciation of real spaces by connecting them to audio tours stored on portable media players that can be listened to any time and anywhere without using mobile telecommunication services. One disadvantage of PodWalks is that it can be difficult for listeners to synchronize their locations with the location that the narrator is describing and, as a result, listeners become disoriented. To solve this problem we propose a new framework—maPodWalks—as an extension to PodWalks which provides maps that are synchronized to the narrations on mobile media players. By forming linkages between virtual and real-world experiences, maPodWalks help users develop mental maps of places of interest. In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of maPodWalks and present a prototype maPodWalk Maker that allows users to easily create geocoded audio tours. The results of system tests comparing the performance of PodWalks and maPodWalks are reported as well. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel rough set approach to discover classification rules in real-valued spatial data in general and remotely sensed data in particular. A knowledge induction process is formulated to select optimal decision rules with a minimal set of features necessary and sufficient for a remote sensing classification task. The approach first converts a real-valued or integer-valued decision system into an interval-valued information system. A knowledge induction procedure is then formulated to discover all classification rules hidden in the information system. Two real-life applications are made to verify and substantiate the conceptual arguments. It demonstrates that the proposed approach can effectively discover in remotely sensed data the optimal spectral bands and optimal rule set for a classification task. It is also capable of unraveling critical spectral band(s) discerning certain classes. The framework paves the road for data mining in mixed spatial databases consisting of qualitative and quantitative data. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article summarizes the results of the workshop on Visualization, Analytics & Spatial Decision Support, which took place at the GIScience conference in September 2006. The discussions at the workshop and analysis of the state of the art have revealed a need in concerted cross-disciplinary efforts to achieve substantial progress in supporting space-related decision making. The size and complexity of real-life problems together with their ill-defined nature call for a true synergy between the power of computational techniques and the human capabilities to analyze, envision, reason, and deliberate. Existing methods and tools are yet far from enabling this synergy. Appropriate methods can only appear as a result of a focused research based on the achievements in the fields of geovisualization and information visualization, human-computer interaction, geographic information science, operations research, data mining and machine learning, decision science, cognitive science, and other disciplines. The name 'Geovisual Analytics for Spatial Decision Support' suggested for this new research direction emphasizes the importance of visualization and interactive visual interfaces and the link with the emerging research discipline of Visual Analytics. This article, as well as the whole special issue, is meant to attract the attention of scientists with relevant expertise and interests to the major challenges requiring multidisciplinary efforts and to promote the establishment of a dedicated research community where an appropriate range of competences is combined with an appropriate breadth of thinking. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Aesthetic seems currently under represented in most current data visualization evaluation methodologies. This paper investigates the results of an online survey of 285 participants, measuring both perceived aesthetic as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of retrieval tasks across a set of 11 different data visualization techniques. The data visualizations represent an identical hierarchical dataset, which has been normalized in terms of color, typography and layout balance. This study measured parameters such as speed of completion, accuracy rate, task abandonment and latency of erroneous response. Our findings demonstrate a correlation between latency in task abandonment and erroneous response time in relation to visualization's perceived aesthetic. These results support the need for an increased recognition for aesthetic in the typical evaluation process of data visualization techniques.
