[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Thanks to the growth of geoportal products and online cartographic platforms, access to spatial data has never been so easy for so many people. But access to cartographic knowledge for laypersons using such data is lagging behind. Platforms that allow users to create map mashups from diverse data sources can lead to unsatisfactory cartographic visualization, which reduces the map's legibility and the usefulness of such functions. This article's focus is on creating a framework that supports smart cartographic functions to improve the quality of map mashups. First, we assess the state of cartographic conflicts due to map mashup, using examples from existing geoportals. Afterwards, we describe a framework that allows us to define cartographic functions, focusing on symbology changes and based on a client-side approach. We do not aim to fully model the complex decision-making process of a professional cartographer, but rather to provide a set of smart functions that use appropriate assumptions and constraints based on cartographic principles and semantic information. As proof of concept, the framework and functions are then integrated within a geoportal. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Recent advances in public sector open data and online mapping software are opening up new possibilities for interactive mapping in research applications. Increasingly there are opportunities to develop advanced interactive platforms with exploratory and analytical functionality. This paper reviews tools and workflows for the production of online research mapping platforms, alongside a classification of the interactive functionality that can be achieved. A series of mapping case studies from government, academia and research institutes are reviewed. The conclusions are that online cartography's technical hurdles are falling due to open data releases, open source software and cloud services innovations. The data exploration functionality of these new tools is powerful and complements the emerging fields of big data and open GIS. International data perspectives are also increasingly feasible. Analytical functionality for web mapping is currently less developed, but promising examples can be seen in areas such as urban analytics. For more presentational research communication applications, there has been progress in story-driven mapping drawing on data journalism approaches that are capable of connecting with very large audiences. [Termes IGN] représentation multipleRésumé : (auteur) In its long history, cartography has always been at the forefront of adapting to new tools. The computer, first introduced 60 years ago, has represented perhaps the greatest change in how maps are made. The further combination of computers and communication technology changed how maps are distributed – and how they are used. Maps became more interactive and animated. The cloud, the nexus of computers and communication technology, is the most recent symbol of this change. While often simply defined as using the processing and storage capacity of data centres, the cloud is interpreted here as representing a workspace for the continued development of maps as a form of both analysis and communication. Examined are the development and formation of the cloud, the distribution of multi-scale pan-able (MSP) maps, and other related areas of cloud cartography.
