[Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a basic set of motion relations capturing specific prototypical movements of vehicles on US road networks are introduced. Vehicle positional data collected from a geosensor network and stored in a spatio-temporal database serve as the basis for computing the relations that include isBehind, inFrontOf, driveBeside, and passBy. Relational SQL queries are used to derive the relations, returning information about pairs of moving objects and their relative positions. This information provides additional user contexts for binary vehicle patterns relative to a reference object. A framework for the kinds of moving objects that participate in these relations is supplied through an associated TransportationDevice ontology. Depending on the class of moving object, a relation such as isBehind captures scenarios that are facilitating or inhibiting with respect to the movement of traffic. For example, if a police car is known to be behind an automobile, the automobile typically slows to correspond with the legal speed limit. In this work, we show how linking the spatio-temporal database to an ontology can augment and extend the motion relation information, providing multi-granular perspectives of moving vehicles. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'itinéraire ou de trajectoireRésumé : (Auteur) Widespread availability of location aware devices (such as GPS receivers) promotes capture of detailed movement trajectories of people, animals, vehicles and other moving objects, opening new options for a better understanding of the processes involved. In this paper we investigate spatio-temporal movement patterns in large tracking data sets. We present a natural definition of the pattern ‘one object is leading others’, which is based on behavioural patterns discussed in the behavioural ecology literature. Such leadership patterns can be characterised by a minimum time length for which they have to exist and by a minimum number of entities involved in the pattern. Furthermore, we distinguish two models (discrete and continuous) of the time axis for which patterns can start and end. For all variants of these leadership patterns, we describe algorithms for their detection, given the trajectories of a group of moving entities. A theoretical analysis as well as experiments show that these algorithms efficiently report leadership patterns. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) A structure recognition technique is presented that can be employed for contextual building and built-up area generalisation in medium-scale topographic maps. Owing to various spatial configurations, a contextual mechanism is necessary to achieve acceptable results in cartographic generalisation. Spatial structures are usually implicit in data, and advanced analysis and processing methods are required to detect them. This technique is based on auxiliary geometric data structures and spatial analysis methods. A case study is performed with a topographic data set, using an interface developed in an object-oriented geographic information system (O-O GIS). The proposed approach was found to assist and improve automation. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (Auteur) For historians and other scholars of the human past, gazetteers are best seen as records of events in the histories of places, rather than as indexes of named places per se. This paper discusses the episodic nature of historical temporality, the narrative form of reasoning in history, and the value of using events as the basis for gazetteers in order to reflect the character of knowledge about historical places. It identifies the attributes of a historical event and introduces the idea that a historical event gazetteer must build networks of relationships among events in order to effectively represent historical narrative. It reviews relevant bodies of literature and proposes a procedure for identifying chronological, meteorological, and causal relationships among historical events. Finally, it suggests new directions in spatiotemporal visualization of history, with reference to a prototype developed by the authors. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Ship detection in inhomogeneous regions using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is usually confronted with the severe heterogeneities of the oceans; this paper proposes a new detection scheme to overcome this problem. At first, an object-oriented segmentation algorithm is employed to partition the whole SAR image into several uniform regions. Then, for each partitioned region within water areas, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is applied to select the optimal background distribution model, and ship detection is carried out using the adaptive constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector based on the selected probability density function. Finally, the detection results of each region are merged. An experiment based on an ENVISAT ASAR image of the Yangtze estuary show that the proposed strategy can effectively deal with heterogeneous scenarios in inhomogenous regions and greatly improves the detection results.
