[Termes IGN] MNS SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) Vegetation canopy heights derived from the SRTM 30 m grid DEM minus USGS National Elevation Data (NED) DTM were compared to three vegetation metrics derived from a medium footprint LIDAR data (LVIS) for the US Sierra Nevada forest in California. Generally the SRTM minus NED was found to underestimate the vegetation canopy height. Comparing the SRTM-NED-derived heights as a function of the canopy percentile height (shape/vertical structure) derived from LVIS, the SRTM SAR signal was found to penetrate, on average, into about 44% of the canopy and 85% after adjustment of the data. On the canopy type analysis, it was found that the SRTM phase scattering centres occurred at 60% for red fir, 53% for Sierra mixed conifer, 50% for ponderosa pine and 50% for montane hardwood-conifer. Whereas analysing the residual errors of the SRTM-NED minus the LVIS-derived canopy height as a function of LVIS canopy height and cover it was observed that the residuals generally increase with increasing canopy height and cover. Likewise, the behaviour of the RMSE as a function of canopy height and cover was observed to initially increase with canopy height and cover but saturates at 50 m canopy height and 60% canopy cover. On the other hand, the behaviour of the correlation coefficient as a function of canopy height and cover was found to be high at lower canopy height (15 m and 20% and Numéro de notice : A2009-257 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/01431160802555853 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160802555853 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=29887

[Termes IGN] JaponRésumé : (auteur) Castanopsis sieboldii var. sieboldii is an evergreen broadleaved canopy tree that grows on Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu Islands in Japan. A closely-related, hybridizing, congener species, C. cuspidata var. cuspidata, has different leaf epidermis structure and different seed nuts morphology compared to C. sieboldii var. sieboldii. Furthermore, the habitats in which the two species grow often indicate different water requirements. Analysis of genetic diversity, using transcribed sequences, will provide a sound basis for the management of this species, allowing successful reforestation, incorporating phylogeographic conservation. In order to obtain transcripts sequences for the species and to develop transcript-based markers, we constructed and analyzed a cDNA library, surveyed microsatellite sequences within it and designed PCR primers for the microsatellites. The cDNA library was constructed using tissue from the inner bark of C. sieboldii var. sieboldii; 3354 Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) were identified. We constructed 2417 putative unigenes and assigned putative functions to 1856 of them. Three hundred and fourteen microsatellites were found within the putative unigenes and 16 EST-SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) markers were developed. The EST-SSR markers developpe in this study should facilitate future analysis of the genetic diversity of this and related species. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) We studied mortality rates of birch, small-leaved linden, pedunculate oak, Norway maple, black alder, common ash and Norway spruce, assessed through two inventories of 12664 trees in the unmanaged mixed deciduous forests of Oranienbaum Park, northwestern Russia, in 1981 and 2003. Our objectives were to evaluate if (a) long-term mortality rates vary among species, and if (b) crown condition, age and tree size affect the probability of mortality. Over this period, tree mortality rates in the park varied annually from 1 to 3% for healthy and moderately healthy trees, and from 3.9 to 9.3% for declining trees. The lowest mortality rates were observed for small-leaved linden and oak (0.8 and 1.0%, respectively), and the highest rate for birch (2.7%). We found (1) a significant and consistent association between tree condition and the probability of mortality, and (2) significantly higher mortality rates in smaller trees of ash, maple and oak. The effect of species-specific biology on mortality rates in the Oranienbaum Park was largely overridden by the “health status” and environmental conditions of the trees (e.g. degree of crown shading). The observed rates were similar to the estimates from natural temperate deciduous forests in both Europe and North America, indicating similar intensity of mortality in these ecosystems under natural conditions.
