[Termes IGN] Utah (Etas-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Land managers need to rapidly assess vegetation composition and bare ground to effectively evaluate and manage shrub steppe communities that have been encroached by pinyon and juniper trees. We used an object-based image analysis (obia) approach to estimate land cover classes found in pinyon-juniper woodlands, and evaluated the relationship between ground measurements and OBIA land cover measurements. We acquired high-spatial resolution color-infrared imagery for five sites with a Vexcel UltraCamX digital camera in June 2009. We simultaneously collected ground-based cover measurements within 30 m x 33 m subplots. OBIA mean land cover class differences by site ranged from underestimating litter by 3 percent to overestimating live trees by 1 percent when compared to ground-based measurements. Overall accuracy for thematic maps was 84 percent with a Kappa statistic of 0.80. Although OBIA cover estimates varied slightly from ground cover estimates, methods provide land managers with options for prioritizing management practices and enabling monitoring at an operational scale. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Recent research results have shown that the performance of digital surface model extraction using novel high-quality photogrammetric images and image matching is a highly competitive alternative to laser scanning. In this article, we proceed to compare the performance of these two methods in the estimation of plot-level forest variables. Dense point clouds extracted from aerial frame images were used to estimate the plot-level forest variables needed in a forest inventory covering 89 plots. We analyzed images with 60% and 80% forward overlaps and used test plots with off-nadir angles of between 0° and 20°. When compared to reference ground measurements, the airborne laser scanning (ALS) data proved to be the most accurate: it yielded root mean square error (RMSE) values of 6.55% for mean height, 11.42% for mean diameter, and 20.72% for volume. When we applied a forward overlap of 80%, the corresponding results from aerial images were 6.77% for mean height, 12.00% for mean diameter, and 22.62% for volume. A forward overlap of 60% resulted in slightly deteriorated RMSE values of 7.55% for mean height, 12.20% for mean diameter, and 22.77% for volume. According to our results, the use of higher forward overlap produced only slightly better results in the estimation of these forest variables. Additionally, we found that the estimation accuracy was not significantly impacted by the increase in the off-nadir angle. Our results confirmed that digital aerial photographs were about as accurate as ALS in forest resources estimation as long as a terrain model was available. [Termes IGN] MarocRésumé : (Auteur) L'étude porte sur la cartographie du couvert arboré de la forêt claire d'arganiers du Sud-Ouest du Maroc. Les données utilisées sont une image Ikonos de 2003 et une image GeoEye de 2011, extraite de Google Earth ; cette dernière est corrigée géométriquement pour être superposable à l'image Ikonos (résolution spatiale 1m). L'approche de classification orientée objet permet de cartographier de façon assez satisfaisante les couronnes des arbres sur les deux images. Cependant la comparaison des résultats des deux classifications laisse apparaître des artefacts et ne peut servir à une analyse diachronique fiable. La solution alternative proposée repose sur l'analyse interactive de l'histogramme bi-varié de deux canaux provenant respectivement de l'image de 2003 et de celle de 2011. Pour la zone étudiée, le couvert arboré a un faible recouvrement (8 % en moyenne) et apparaît stable de 2003 à 2011, avec localement une légère diminution de densité des arbres. [Vedettes matières IGN] DendrométrieRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] La mesure du volume des houppiers des arbres est extrêmement laborieuse alors que la valeur commerciale du bois est faible. Cependant il est de plus en plus nécessaire d’estimer correctement ces houppiers en volume et en biomasse dès lors qu’on envisage de les valoriser à des fins énergétiques. De même, lorsqu’il s’agit d’évaluer les quantités de carbone stockées en forêt : les inventaires forestiers nationaux sont bien armés pour estimer des volumes de tiges, mais les volumes des houppiers sont estimés souvent indirectement. Dans les deux cas, une méthode possible est d’attribuer au houppier une proportion du volume de tige ou de grume estimé par ailleurs, c’est-à-dire que l’on suppose que l’accroissement total de volume de l’arbre est relié à l’accroissement de sa tige et que l’on peut expliciter cette relation. Cet article se propose d’éclairer cette relation entre volume de tige et volume de houppier, plus complexe qu’il y paraît et qui peut donner lieu à de multiples définitions. En explorant deux définitions assez usuelles, l’une en recherche, l’autre en gestion, il se propose aussi de donner des ordres de grandeurs par essence et contexte et surtout d’analyser les sources principales de variation.
