[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Several comparative studies have reported that there can be great discrepancies between different methods used to estimate forest biomass. With the development of carbon markets, an accurate estimation at the regional scale (i.e. county level) is becoming increasingly important for local government. In this study, we applied five methodologies [continuous biomass expansion factor (CBEF) approach, mean biomass density (MB) approach, mean biomass expansion factor (MBEF) approach, national continuous biomass expansion factors (NCBEF) proposed by Fang et al (2002), standard IPCC approach] to estimate the total biomass for Shitai County, China. The CBEF is generally considered to provide the most realistic estimates in term of regional biomass because CBEF reflects the change of BEF to stand density, stand age and site conditions. The forests of the whole county were divided into four forest types, namely Chinese fir plantations (CF), hardwood broadleaved forests (HB), softwood–broadleaved forests (SB) and mason pine forests (MP) according to the local forest management inventory of 2004. Generally, the MBEF approach overestimated forest biomass while the IPCC approach underestimated forest biomass for all forest types when CBEF derived biomass was used as a control. The MB approach provided the most similar biomass estimates for all forest types and could be an alternative approach when a CBEF equation is lacking in the study area. The total biomass derived from MBEF was highest at 1.44×107 t, followed by 1.32 ×107 t from CBEF, 1.31 ×107 t from NCBEF, 1.25 ×107 t from MB and 1.16 ×107 t from IPCC. Our results facilitate method selection for regional forest biomass estimation and provide statistical evidence for local government planning to enter the potential carbon market. [Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (auteur) We proposed a new area-based approach to process Lidar point clouds and develop new sets of metrics to improve models dedicated to predict forest parameters. First, we introduced point normalization based on penetration depth below the outer canopy layer to avoid biases introduced by ground normalization and canopy surface heterogeneity during metric computation. Second, we proposed computation of area and volume metrics from canopy surface models computed from both first and last returns to better characterize the 3D plot heterogeneity. The set of proposed metrics were combined with traditional ones, based on point height above ground level, to measure their contribution to models of basal area (BA) and aboveground volume (AGV). The modeling framework included a wide range of forest types, canopy structures and Lidar characteristics. Models were developed for all sites grouped together or separately. In each case, the set of metrics was submitted to a hierarchical clustering process to select the best variables to be included in the models that were further established using a best-subset method. Overall, the introduction of the proposed metrics allowed a reduction in models root mean squared error from − 0.06% to 19.58% according to forest types and target forest parameters. Best improvements were achieved for broadleaved forests, showing the potential of the proposed metrics to efficiently characterize the structure of such porous forest canopies. [Termes IGN] zone saillante 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate separation of photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic components in a forest canopy from 3-D terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data is a challenging but of key importance to understand the spatial distribution of the radiation regime, photosynthetic processes, and carbon and water exchanges of the forest canopy. The objective of this paper was to improve current methods for separating photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic components in TLS data of forest canopies by adding two additional filters only based on its geometric information. By comparing the proposed approach with the eigenvalues plus color information-based method, we found that the proposed approach could effectively improve the overall producer's accuracy from 62.12% to 95.45%, and the overall classification producer's accuracy would increase from 84.28% to 97.80% as the forest leaf area index (LAI) decreases from 4.15 to 3.13. In addition, variations in tree species had negligible effects on the final classification accuracy, as shown by the overall producer's accuracy for coniferous (93.09%) and broadleaf (94.96%) trees. To remove quantitatively the effects of the woody materials in a forest canopy for improving TLS-based LAI estimates, we also computed the “woody-to-total area ratio” based on the classified linear class points from an individual tree. Automatic classification of the forest point cloud data set will facilitate the application of TLS on retrieving 3-D forest canopy structural parameters, including LAI and leaf and woody area ratios. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Medium-scale historical maps are often the only cartographic source of former forest area distribution on a regional level. In conjunction with a database of the current distribution of species or functional traits, maps may be valuable tool for studying the impact of previous land use on ecosystems. In this study a heterogeneous set of historical maps was used to reconstruct the multi-temporal pattern of the forest area in a moderately forested region (5,180 km2) of southern Latvia during the last 220 years. Changes in the total forest cover were assessed in four time slices and compared with available historical statistical data. To validate the obtained multi-temporal data for ecological studies, the impact of continuous forest cover on the present-day mean stand area and tree species richness derived from the present-day forest inventory database of 94,886 stands was quantified by bivariate and regression analyses. We found no significant impact of inaccuracy of the historical maps on the entire forest continuity pattern of the study area. In particular, the diversity metrics dependencies on the forest continuity can be described by quadratic regression models with coefficients of determination close to one. We also found that the mean stand area is for about 18% larger in woodlands with longer forest continuity irrespective of the forest type. The older woodland the less difference was found between boreal deciduous and nemoral deciduous forests in terms of tree species richness.
