[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) The material distribution inside tree crowns is difficult to quantify even though it is an important variable in forest management and ecology. The vertical distribution of a relative density index (i.e., vertical profile) of the total, woody, and leafy material at the crown scale were estimated from terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data on two species, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and balsam fir (Abies Balsamea Mill.). An algorithm based on a geometrical approach readily available in the Computree open source platform was used. Beta distributions were then fitted to the vertical profiles and compared to each other. Total and leafy profiles had similar shapes, while woody profiles were different. Thus, the total vertical distribution could be a good proxy for the leaf distribution in the crown. Sugar maple and balsam fir had top heavy and bottom heavy distributions respectively, which can be explained by their respective architectural development. Moreover, the foliage distribution of sugar maples shifted towards the crown base when it was found in mixed stands, when compared to pure stands. The opposite behavior was observed for balsam firs, but less pronounced. According to the shape of the foliage distribution, sugar maple takes advantages from mixture contrarily to balsam fir. From a methodological point of view, we proposed an original approach to separate wood from leaf returns in TLS data while taking into account occlusion. Wood and leaf separation and occlusion problems are two challenging issues for most TLS-based studies in forest ecology. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Mapping tropical tree species at landscape scales to provide information for ecologists and forest managers is a new challenge for the remote sensing community. For this purpose, detection and delineation of individual tree crowns (ITCs) is a prerequisite. Here, we present a new method of automatic tree crown delineation based only on very high resolution images from WorldView-2 satellite and apply it to a region of the Atlantic rain forest with highly heterogeneous tropical canopy cover – the Santa Genebra forest reserve in Brazil. The method works in successive steps that involve pre-processing, selection of forested pixels, enhancement of borders, detection of pixels in the crown borders, correction of shade in large trees and, finally, segmentation of the tree crowns. Principally, the method uses four techniques: rolling ball algorithm and mathematical morphological operations to enhance the crown borders and ease the extraction of tree crowns; bimodal distribution parameters estimations to identify the shaded pixels in the gaps, borders, and crowns; and focal statistics for the analysis of neighbouring pixels. Crown detection is validated by comparing the delineated ITCs with a sample of ITCs delineated manually by visual interpretation. In addition, to test if the spectra of individual species are conserved in the automatic delineated crowns, we compare the accuracy of species prediction with automatic and manual delineated crowns with known species. We find that our method permits detection of up to 80% of ITCs. The seven species with over 10 crowns identified in the field were mapped with reasonable accuracy (30.5–96%) given that only WorldView-2 bands and texture features were used. Similar classification accuracies were obtained using both automatic and manual delineation, thereby confirming that species’ spectral responses are preserved in the automatic method and thus permitting the recognition of species at the landscape scale. Our method might support tropical forest applications, such as mapping species and canopy characteristics at the landscape scale. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Characterization of individual trees is essential for many applications in forest management and ecology. Previous studies relied on single tree detection from monochromatic wavelength airborne laser scanning (ALS) systems and they focused on the use of the geometric spatial information of the point clouds (i.e., X, Y, and Z coordinates). However, there is quite often a difficulty dealing with clumped trees when only the geometric spatial information is considered. The emergence of multispectral LiDAR sensors provides a new solution for individual tree structure acquisition. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of multispectral ALS data for delineating individual trees which are challenging by using the monochromatic wavelength ALS system. The proposed workflow utilizes the mean shift segmentation method on different feature spaces for crown isolation. In addition, both spatial domain and multispectral domain are used to refine the under-segmentation crown segments. Ten plots (2 sets of different structural complexity) located in the dense coniferous forest area in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada are selected as experiment data. Results show that the developed method correctly detects 88% and 82% of the dominant trees with and without multispectral information, respectively. Compared with segmentation using geometric spatial information solely, the main improvements are achieved for clumped tree segment with the distinguished multispectral features. This study demonstrates that multispectral airborne laser scanning data is more capable for individual tree delineation than monochromatic wavelength laser scanning data in dealing with forests with clumped crowns in dense forests. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Many applications dedicated to urban areas (e.g. land cover mapping and biophysical properties estimation) using high spatial resolution remote sensing images require the use of 3D atmospheric correction methods, able to model complex light interactions within urban topography such as buildings and trees. Currently, one major drawback of these methods is their lack in modeling the radiative signature of trees (e.g. the light transmitted through the tree crown), which leads to an over-estimation of ground reflectance at tree shadows. No study has been carried out to take into account both optical and structural properties of trees in the correction provided by these methods. The aim of this work is to improve an existing 3D atmospheric correction method, ICARE (Inversion Code for urban Areas Reflectance Extraction), to account for trees in its new version, ICARE-VEG (ICARE with VEGetation). After the execution of ICARE, the methodology of ICARE-VEG consists in tree crown delineation and tree shadow detection, and then the application of a physics-based correction factor in order to perform a tree-specific local correction for each pixel in tree shadow. A sensitivity analysis with a design of experiments performed with a 3D canopy radiative transfer code, DART (Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer), results in fixing the two most critical variables contributing to the impact of an isolated tree crown on the radiative energy budget at tree shadow: the solar zenith angle and the tree leaf area index (LAI). Thus, the approach to determine the correction factor relies on an empirical statistical regression and the addition of a geometric scaling factor to account for the tree crown occultation from ground. ICARE-VEG and ICARE performance were compared and validated in the Visible-Near Infrared Region (V-NIR: 0.4–1.0 µm) with hyperspectral airborne data at 0.8 m resolution on three ground materials types, grass, asphalt and water. Results show that (i) ICARE-VEG improves the mean absolute error in retrieved reflectances compared to ICARE in tree shadows by a multiplicative factor ranging between 4.2 and 18.8, and (ii) reduces the spectral bias in reflectance from visible to NIR (due to light transmission through the tree crown) by a multiplicative factor between 1.0 and 1.4 in terms of spectral angle mapper performance. ICARE-VEG opens the way to a complete interpretation of remote sensing images (sunlit, shade cast by both buildings and trees) and the derivation of scientific value-added products over all the entire image without the preliminary step of shadow masking.
