Previous studies relied on single tree detection from monochromatic wavelength airborne laser scanning (ALS) systems and they focused on the use of the geometric spatial information of the point clouds (i.e., X, Y, and Z coordinates). However, there is quite often a difficulty dealing with clumped trees when only the geometric spatial information is considered. The emergence of multispectral LiDAR sensors provides a new solution for individual tree structure acquisition. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of multispectral ALS data for delineating individual trees which are challenging by using the monochromatic wavelength ALS system. The proposed workflow utilizes the mean shift segmentation method on different feature spaces for crown isolation. In addition, both spatial domain and multispectral domain are used to refine the under-segmentation crown segments. Ten plots (2 sets of different structural complexity) located in the dense coniferous forest area in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada are selected as experiment data. Results show that the developed method correctly detects 88% and 82% of the dominant trees with and without multispectral information, respectively. Compared with segmentation using geometric spatial information solely, the main improvements are achieved for clumped tree segment with the distinguished multispectral features. This study demonstrates that multispectral airborne laser scanning data is more capable for individual tree delineation than monochromatic wavelength laser scanning data in dealing with forests with clumped crowns in dense forests. [Termes IGN] surface forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Extracting information from a polarimetric radar representation usually consists in decomposing it with target decomposition algorithms. This first step can be seen as a geometric analysis of the polarimetric information: the identification of physical radar scattering mechanisms. The problem is that average physical parameters are estimated. As a consequence, these parameters might not describe correctly any of the land cover types that can be mixed together into the radar resolution cell. Therefore, using the polarimetric parameters for land cover classification is challenging. The novelty of the method is to propose a thematic analysis of the polarimetric information preceding the geometric one. The objective is to assess if splitting off polarimetric information on a land cover type basis before applying usual target decomposition algorithms can produce more consistent radar scattering mechanisms when land cover classes are mixed inside the radar resolution cell. A cooperative fusion framework in which very high-resolution optical images are used to unmix physical radar scattering mechanisms is proposed. For bare soil and forests, we point out that a linear unmixing model applied to the covariance matrix is able to split off polarimetric information on a land cover type basis. The assessment of the unmixed radar matrices is carried out with polarimetric radar images from the Radarsat-2 satellite. It was found that despite speckle, the reconstructed radar information after the unmixing process is statistically relevant with the observations. The question whether the unmixed radar images contain relevant thematic information is more challenging, but results tend to validate this property. This method could be used to have a better estimation of vegetation biomass in the context of open forested areas. [Termes IGN] sol forestierRésumé : (Auteur) The main aim of the current study was to estimate the annual net nitrogen mineralization (NNM) flux in stands of different tree species growing on drained peatlands, as well as to clarify the effect of tree species, soil properties and litter on annual NNM dynamics. Three study sites were set up in May 2014: a downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) stand and a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stand in Oxalis full-drained swamp (ODS) and a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand in Myrtillus full-drained swamp (MDS). The NNM flux was estimated using the in situ method with incubated polyethylene bags. The highest value of NNM was found in stands that were growing on fertile ODS: 127.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1 and 87.7 kg N ha–1 yr–1, in the downy birch stand and in the Norway spruce stand, respectively. A significantly lower annual NNM flux (11.8 kg N ha–1 yr–1) occurred in the Scots pine stand growing in MDS. Nitrification was highest at fertile ODS sites and ammonification was the highest at the low fertility MDS site. For all study sites, positive correlation was found between soil temperature and NNM intensity. The difference in annual NNM between the downy birch stand and the Norway spruce stand growing on similar drained fertile peatlands was due to litter quality. The annual N input into the soil through leaf litter was the highest at the downy birch site where also the C/N ratio of litter was the lowest. The second highest N input into the soil was found in the spruce stand and the lowest in the pine stand. [Termes IGN] Phyllostachys edulisRésumé : (Auteur) The growth of individual trees in a forest is affected by many factors, a crucial one being the intensity of competition among trees, because it affects the spatial structure of the forest and is in turn influenced by silvicultural practices. In a mixed forest in particular, the growth of trees is affected by multiple interactions. To analyse the competition between moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens (Pradelle) Mazel ex J.Houz.) and broad-leaved trees in a mixed forest, data were extracted by sampling six spots within such a forest using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The convex hull algorithm was used for calculating the overlap volume between the crowns of the broad-leaved trees and the bamboo canopy. Bamboos growing at least 3 m away from any of the broad-leaved trees were the most numerous and the diameter at breast height (DBH) is larger than those growing closer than that, which suggests that broad-leaved trees suppressed the growth of bamboo if they are closer but promote it beyond 3 m up to a point at which the distance is too great for any such effect. The modified Hegyi’s competition index was constructed based on the canopy factor, which may better describe the competitive interaction among the trees and bamboos. Using TLS can enhance our understanding of the competition among trees in mixed forests and help in planning the spatial structure of such forests in general and provide a benchmark for choosing planting distances in particular. [Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (Auteur) Drought is one of the key natural hazards impacting net primary production and tree growth in forest ecosystems. Nonetheless, tree species show different responses to drought events, which make it difficult to adopt fixed tools for monitoring drought impacts under contrasting environmental and climatic conditions. In this study, we assess the response of forest growth and a satellite proxy of the net primary production (NPP) to drought in peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands, a region characterized by complex climatological, topographical, and environmental characteristics. Herein, we employed three different indicators based on in situ measurements and satellite image-derived vegetation information (i.e., tree-ring width, maximum annual greenness, and an indicator of NPP). We used seven different climate drought indices to assess drought impacts on the tree variables analyzed. The selected drought indices include four versions of the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI, Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI), Z-index, and Palmer Modified Drought Index (PMDI)) and three multi-scalar indices (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and Standardized Precipitation Drought Index (SPDI)). Our results suggest that—irrespective of drought index and tree species—tree-ring width shows a stronger response to interannual variability of drought, compared to the greenness and the NPP. In comparison to other drought indices (e.g., PDSI), and our results demonstrate that multi-scalar drought indices (e.g., SPI, SPEI) are more advantageous in monitoring drought impacts on tree-ring growth, maximum greenness, and NPP. This finding suggests that multi-scalar indices are more appropriate for monitoring and modelling forest drought in peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands.
