[Termes IGN] paysage urbainRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines characteristics of urban land-use and land-cover (LULC) classes using spectral mixture analysis (SMA), and develops a conceptual model for characterizing urban LULC patterns. A Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image of Indianapolis City was used in this research and a minimum noise fraction (MNF) transform was employed to convert the ETM+ image into principal components. Five image endmembers (shade, green vegetation, impervious surface, dry soil, and dark soil) were selected, and an unconstrained least-squares solution was used to unmix the MNF components into fraction images. Different combinations of three or four endmembers were evaluated. The best fraction images were chosen to classify LULC classes based on a hybrid procedure that combined maximum-likelihood and decision-tree algorithms. The results indicate that the SMA-based approach significantly improved classification accuracy as compared to the maximum-likelihood classifier. The fraction images were found to be effective for characterizing the urban landscape patterns. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A Geographic Information System (GIS) populated with disparate data sources has multiple and différent representations of the same real-world object. Often, the type of information in these sources is différent, and combining them to generate one composite representation has many benefits. The first step in this conflation process is to identify the features in different sources that represent the same real-world entity. The matching process is not simple, since the identified features from different sources do not always match in their location, extent, and description. We present a new approach to matching GIS features from disparate sources. A graph theoretic approach is used to model the geographic context and to determine the matching features from multiple sources. Experiments on implementation of this approach demonstrate its viability. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel generalization model for selecting characteristic streets in an urban street network. This model retains the central structure of a street network. It relies on a structural representation of a street network using graph principles where vertices represent named streets and links represent street intersections. Based on this representation, so-called connectivity graph, centrality measures are introduced to qualify the status of each individual vertex within the graph. We show that these measures can be used for characterizing the structural properties of an urban street network, and for the selection of important streets. The proposed approach is validated by a case study applied to a middle-sized Swedish city. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Many vegetation classification strategies in tropical ecosystems involving conventional image processing of original satellite imagery bands require considerable prior site knowledge, statistical assumptions, and are difficult, expensive and inconsistent. In this paper we show that the intra-annual variation and rates of change in NDVI for different parts of a large forest area in combination with rules derived from a tree model can be used for detailed vegetation mapping. We used three-date NDVI data for the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, southern India comprising mean NDVI, coefficient of variation (CV) and two NDVI change vectors corresponding to intraseasonal NDVI differences. A rule-based classification using a tree model was developed at two levels. The overall kappa statistic is 0.61 at level 1 classification. indicating a strong correspondence with the raster version of the available vector reference map based on ground data, even though the two maps are not strictly comparable. Several limitations of the available reference map have been highlighted by the new technique, especially the absence of ecotones. At level two the tree model map has provided detailed classification of dry deciduous forests and new classes not available in the reference map. The method in combination with reference data also provides a framework for fuzzy classification. This technique offers a relatively simple cost-effective alternative to existing classification strategies, especially for areas with diverse evergreen and deciduous vegetation elements.
