[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Over the past several decades, archaeologists have been developing and improving methods for collection, analysis, visualization, and modeling of site information. Despite the increasing capabilities of GlScience tools in recent years, archaeology is an application domain where these capabilities have not been fully utilized. This paper presents preliminary results on the development of geovisual analytics functions for archaeological investigation by extending Space-Time Cube (STC) software currently under development. Graph-theoretical techniques are implemented to uncover and visualize spatio-temporal relationships between artefacts from different historical periods excavated at different locations. These techniques are implemented and tested on a database of archaeological sites in Puerto Rico. The contribution of this research to visual analytics is the integration of space, time, and relationships within a single interactive environment. The extended STC facilitates insight into potential interactions or clashes among different cultures identified through archaeological digs. This is achieved through building linkages between database tuples based on attribute similarities which can be explicitly visualized and queried within the STC environment. The paper concludes with a summary of the effectiveness and potential of the prototype and its functionality. [Termes IGN] processus ponctuel marquéRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, we propose an automatic detection algorithm for cloud/shadow on remote sensing optical images. It is based on physical properties of clouds and shadows, namely for a cloud and its associated shadow: both are connex objects of similar shape and area, and they are related by their relative locations. We show that these properties can be formalized using Markov Random Field (MRF) framework at two levels: one MRF over the pixel graph for connexity modelling, and one MRF over the graph of objects (clouds and shadows) for their relationship modelling. Then, we show that, practically, having performed an image pre-processing step (channel inter-calibration) specific to cloud detection, the local optimization of the proposed MRF models leads to a rather simple image processing algorithm involving only six parameters. Using a 39 image database, performance is shown and discussed, in particular in comparison with the Marked Point Process approach. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Very high resolution satellite images provide valuable information to researchers. Among these, urban-area boundaries and building locations play crucial roles. For a human expert, manually extracting this valuable information is tedious. One possible solution to extract this information is using automated techniques. Unfortunately, the solution is not straightforward if standard image processing and pattern recognition techniques are used. Therefore, to detect the urban area and buildings in satellite images, we propose the use of scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) and graph theoretical tools. SIFT keypoints are powerful in detecting objects under various imaging conditions. However, SIFT is not sufficient for detecting urban areas and buildings alone. Therefore, we formalize the problem in terms of graph theory. In forming the graph, we represent each keypoint as a vertex of the graph. The unary and binary relationships between these vertices (such as spatial distance and intensity values) lead to the edges of the graph. Based on this formalism, we extract the urban area using a novel multiple subgraph matching method. Then, we extract separate buildings in the urban area using a novel graph cut method. We form a diverse and representative test set using panchromatic 1-m-resolution Ikonos imagery. By extensive testings, we report very promising results on automatically detecting urban areas and buildings. [Termes IGN] rapport base hauteurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper aims to present a new approach for automatic urban scene modeling from high-resolution satellite images with focus on building areas. The input data consist of a panchromatic stereo pair of satellite images, with a submetric resolution of 50–70 cm and a low Base to Height ratio B/H [0.05–0.2]. Since a detailed extraction and description of building roofs is complex in a satellite context, we propose to describe the scene by means of a 3D-surface that provides either raster or vector information using different description levels. The main contribution of our approach is the use of 3D-features such as 3D-segments and 3D-facets to guide the optimization process. 3D surface modeling can be formulated as a matching problem that can be solved by graph cut minimization. The novelty consists in the original construction of the graph to combine input 2D data and 3D feature constraints to control the final surface. Complementary features are used. 3D-segments modelize discontinuities and 3D-facets help to regularize the surface by planar patches. The proposed automatic system provides a surface height map with subpixellar precision. Moreover, the system is generic and extensible to other data such as aerial and terrestrial images or to a multiple view context. External databases can also be easily added to the process to constrain the optimization.
