[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Common Spatial Data Models (SDMs) such the vector, raster, and quadtree have well understood and widely practiced conventions of storage and visualization. This paper explores what happens when the conventions of visualization are not strictly adhered to, and the SDMs are used in an atypical fashion. A framework based on a quasi similarity measure is presented, which quantifies (in terras of "distance") the relationship between the storage format and the visualization output, following an accepted protocol. This research used a transformation process (Tp) to define this distance. Then, the atypical use of the quadtree SDM to represent choropleth spatial boundary uncertainty and attribute uncertainty was quantified using the same framework. This research shows that if a SDM is used outside of its original context, then the distance between the storage format and its visual output can alter; in our case, the distance decreased. This result was interpreted as evidence for the creation of a new spatial data structure. The formalization of the relationship between an SDM and its visual output will be valuable for future exploration of the non-conventional visualization of common SDMs.

[Termes IGN] World Geodetic System 1984Résumé : (Auteur) The WGS84 ellipsoid is tessellated using quadrilaterals of roughly the same size. This tiling is of general interest to global geographical information systems, but it has special relevance to global digital elevation models based on block averages. The simple relation between the tiling presented and the latitude/longitude reference system makes the tiling easy to implement, and the quadrilateral property of the cells offers regular subdivision like quadtrees. An error analysis gives a strict bound on the difference between cell averages calculated in plane and ellipsoidal coordinates. The mathematical results from this investigation are general and can be applied in error analysis related to other types of quadrilateral meshes. The grid can be easily subdivided into quadtree blocks. The error estimate makes it possible to combine the quadtree structure with standard two-dimensional wavelet representations. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the use of quadtree segmentation of a land-cover map to improve error modelling by (1) accounting for variation in classification accuracy among differently sized homogeneous map regions and (2) improving the statistical properties of map realizations generated by sequential indicator simulation (SIS). The latter was accomplished by locating the first simulation nodes -which affect many subsequent local simulations- within the largest quadtree leaves. These represent the largest homogeneous and hypothetically most accurately classified areas on the map. A case study showed that, indeed, the overall accuracy of the land-cover map increased with the quadtree leaf size, ranging from 67% for single cells in heterogeneous areas to 98% for homogeneous blocks of 256 cells. A map of the prior probability of each land-cover class was prepared on the basis of quadtree level-specific confusion matrices. Next, two unconditional SIS algorithms were used to generate sets of 50 realizations of the map, thereby accounting for spatial continuity of the residuals between indicator-transformed reference data and the priors. The proposed quadtree-guided SIS outperformed the more common multiple-steps method as judged by the reproduction of target proportions of map categories, class-specific accuracy levels and variogram reproduction.
