Uniquely, the proposed system is an integrated solution that merges the power of perceptual grouping theory (Gabor filtering, tensor voting) and optimized segmentation techniques (global optimization using graph-cuts) into a unified framework to address the challenging problems of geospatial feature detection and classification. Firstly, the local precision of the Gabor filters is combined with the global context of the tensor voting to produce accurate classification of the geospatial features. In addition, the tensorial representation used for the encoding of the data eliminates the need for any thresholds, therefore removing any data dependencies. Secondly, a novel orientation-based segmentation is presented which incorporates the classification of the perceptual grouping, and results in segmentations with better defined boundaries and continuous linear segments. Finally, a set of gaussian-based filters are applied to automatically extract centerline information (magnitude, width and orientation). This information is then used for creating road segments and transforming them to their polygonal representations. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) It is well received in the space syntax community that traffic flow is significantly correlated to a morphological property of streets, which are represented by axial lines, forming a so called axial map. The correlation coefficient (R 2) approaches 0.8 and even a higher value according to the space syntax literature. In this paper, we study the same issue using the Hong Kong street network and the Hong Kong Annual Average Daily Traffic datasets, and find surprisingly that street-based topological representations (or street-street topologies) tend to be better representations than the axial map. In other words, vehicle flow is correlated to a morphological property of streets better than that of axial lines. Based on the finding, we suggest the street-based topological representations as an alternative GIS representation, and the topological analyses as a new analytical means for geographic knowledge discovery. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Elimination of displacement due to map editing inherent in road centerline data of the New Topographic map Information System (NTIS) is implemented. Panchromatic satellite images from ALOS/PRISM are used in the process. Histogram analysis of gray value profiles parallel to the roads is employed. The true-position candidate is selected by supervised classification of histograms using support vector machine (SVM) method. According to the experiments with the Japanese NTIS road centerline database, the proposed method reverses the displacement of approximately 50 % of the road features, while a further 20% of the road features are validated as already located at the true position. The proposed method is proved to be useful for German Amtliches Topographisch-Kartographisches InformationsSystem (ATKIS) road database. This indicates wider applicability of this method to various geographic regions. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) In line generalization, a first goal to achieve is the classification of features previous to the selection of processes and parameters. A feed forward backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN) is designed for classifying a set of road lines through a supervised learning process, attempting to emulate a classification performed by a human expert for cartographic generalization purposes. The main steps of the process are presented in this paper: (a) experimental data selection; (b) segmentation of lines into homogeneous sections, (c) sections enrichment through a set of quantitative measures derived from a principal component analysis, and qualitative information derived from road network and road type; (d) expert classification of the sections; and finally (e) the ANN design, training and validation. The quality of results is analyzed by means of error matrices after a cross-validation process giving a goodness, or percentage of agreement, over 83%. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the real world, there are many phenomena that occur on a network or alongside a network; for example, traffic accidents on highways and retail stores along streets in an urbanized area. In the literature, these phenomena are analysed under the assumption that distance is measured with Euclidean distance on a plane. This paper first examines this assumption and shows an empirical finding that Euclidean distance is significantly different from the shortest path distance in an urbanized area if the distance is less than 500 m. This implies that service areas in urbanized areas cannot be well represented by Voronoi diagrams defined on a plane with Euclidean distance, termed generalized planar Voronoi diagrams. To overcome this limitation, second, this paper formulates six types of Voronoi diagrams defined on a network, termed generalized network Voronoi diagrams, whose generators are given by points, sets of points, lines and polygons embedded in a network, and whose distances are given by inward/outward distances, and additively/multiplicatively weighted shortest path distances. Third, in comparison with the generalized planar Voronoi diagrams, the paper empirically shows that the generalized network Voronoi diagrams can more precisely represent the service areas in urbanized areas than the corresponding planar Voronoi diagrams. Fourth, because the computational methods for constructing the generalized planar Voronoi diagrams in the literature cannot be applied to constructing the generalized network Voronoi diagrams, the paper provides newly developed efficient algorithms using the 'extended' shortest path trees. Last, the paper develops user-friendly tools (that are included in SANET, a toolbox for spatial analysis on a network) for executing these computational methods in a GIS environment.
