[Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (auteur) Mitigating the atmospheric phase delay is one of the largest challenges faced by the differential synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry community. Recently, many publications have studied correcting the stratified tropospheric phase delay by assuming a linear model between them and the topography. However, most of these studies have not considered the effect of turbulent atmospheric artifacts when adjusting the linear model to data. In this paper, we present an improved technique that minimizes the influence of the turbulent atmosphere in the model adjustment. In the proposed algorithm, the model is adjusted to the phase differences of pixels instead of using the unwrapped phase of each pixel. In addition, the different phase differences are weighted as a function of its atmospheric phase screen covariance estimated from an empirical variogram to reduce, in the model adjustment, the impact of pixel pairs with a significant turbulent atmosphere. The good performance of the proposed method has been validated with both the simulated and real Sentinel-1A SAR data in the mountainous area of Tenerife island, Spain. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Polarization orientation angle (POA) is an important parameter of polarimetric radar scattering from slopes in mountainous region. It is known that surface tilted in azimuth direction and buildings not aligned in the along-track direction induce polarization orientation shifts. Earlier research has established orientation angle as a function of radar imaging geometry and surface slopes, and that POA estimation can be derived from polarimetric radar data using circular polarization. Besides these, polarimetric scattering from steep slopes and its relation to POA remain not well understood. In this paper, we address these issues by adopting a tilted surface model based on Bragg scattering. We have found that, as the azimuthal slope increases, |VV| decreases at a faster rate than |HH|, they become equal, when POA is ±45°, and |HH| > |VV| afterward. In other words, the Pauli component, |HH-VV| reduced to zero at POA = ± 45°, and the typical Bragg scattering characteristics of |VV| > |HH| does not apply when steep slope is present inducing |POA| > 45°. Furthermore, the cross-pol |HV| does not always increase with azimuth slope but also reaches a maximum then decreases to zero. In addition, we investigate the effect of soil moisture on polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) scattering characteristics of steep terrain and the effect of vegetation over surface on POA estimation. The latter is demonstrated with NASA/JPL TOPSAR L-band PolSAR data and C-band InSAR data. Another significance of this paper is that it provides a direct and rigorous derivation of POA equations. The earlier version was derived from a different concept. In 2015, a research project began to monitor the long-term movements an d volume changes of this ice deposit and to understand the microclimate of the cave. With two expeditions organized in October 2015 and September 2016, a complete study of the cave was carried out using a 3D laser scanner HDS7000 in 2015 and a scanner ScanStation P40 in 2016. Installation of barometric datalodgers, temperature and humidity in different areas of the cave provide a one-year record of the microclimate. In addtion, pollen traps have been installed to study the current flow of pollen on and inside the cave while preliminary analyzes of pollen grains held in the ice are in progress. The Cenote Abyss Ice Caves Research Project aim to shed light on the changing climate of the Dolomites over the past several hundred years, perhaps thousands of years, as well as on environmental changes more recent events that led to the melting of the cave glacier. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (Auteur) In the autumn of 1914, Austria-Hungary began to prepare for the possibility of an Italian offensive by building field fortifications, which formed the Tyrol Defense Line (TDL). Mountainous areas, such as the area of the TDL, present obstacles to trafficability in large part caused by terrain slope. On the eastern Tyrol front, steep slope obstructed trafficability when the Italians attacked the TDL and represented, in turn, an advantage for the Austro-Hungarian defense. This paper focuses on the assessment of the conditions of trafficability determined by slope in the eastern Tyrol front, using a GIS cost distance analysis. Key sources were the maps of Austrian and Italian official histories, parameters derived mainly from Marinelli’s slope classification, and from the interpretation of the particular historical circumstances. The advantages and disadvantages were considered from the perspective of the defensive and offensive and their significance for the history of this conflict. In particular, these were related to the perimeter to be defended by alternative Austro-Hungarian lines. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Understanding the response of plant species to soil factors on coastal sand dunes is critical for effective conservation of coastal habitats in the Mediterranean basin. Our main objectives were to investigate: i) the main soil factors driving species composition in a Mediterranean coastal dune environment; ii) the ecological requirements of focal plant species with respect to single soil factors; iii) whether the focal species of a given macrohabitat (including EU habitats) have similar edaphic needs. We identified 108 plots with three macrohabitats as strata (embryo dunes; mobile dunes; fixed dunes) by random stratified sampling design along the Tyrrhenian coast of central Italy in areas with a high degree of biodiversity and naturalness. Vegetation and soil data were collected in the plots.
Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) confirmed that soil had a main role in driving focal dune species composition as found in other Mediterranean areas and indicated that three factors (field capacity, pH and CaCO3) sufficiently explain patterns of plant species. An inverse relation between field capacity, which proves to be the most decisive feature for differences in species ecological requirements between macrohabitats, and pH was observed. Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) showed that: i) the focal species of fixed dunes have a higher probability of occurrence and response curves that overlap at high field capacity and TOC values and at low pH, showing an opposite trend with respect to the species of embryonic and mixed dunes; ii) species of mixed dunes have a probability of occurrence linked to different values of CaCO3, with Ammophila arenaria showing its optimum at high CaCO3 values. Thus our results sustain the hypothesis that dune focal species, diagnostic and characteristic of coastal dune marcohabitats, have different ecological responses with respect to soil factors. Moreover, species within the same habitat can have different ecological responses due to species competition. Data about edaphic requirements of sand dune species and modelling of their ecological responses suggests that focal dune species can be bio-indicators of soil conditions and provide useful indications for conservation, monitoring and restoration of Mediterranean coastal habitats.
