[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Road curve attributes can be determined by using Geographic Information System (GIS) to be used in road vehicle traffic safety and planning studies. This study involves analyzing the GIS-based estimation accuracy in the length, radius and the number of small horizontal road curves on a two-lane rural road and a forest road. The prediction success of horizontal curve attributes was investigated using digitized raw and generalized/simplified road segments. Two different roads were examined, involving 20 test groups and two control groups, using 22 datasets obtained from digitized and surveyed roads based on satellite imagery, GIS estimates, and field measurements. Confusion matrix tables were also used to evaluate the prediction accuracy of horizontal curve geometry. F-score, Mathews Correlation Coefficient, Bookmaker Informedness and Balanced Accuracy were used to investigate the performance of test groups. The Kruskal–Wallis test was used to analyze the statistical relationships between the data. Compared to the Bezier generalization algorithm, the Douglas–Peucker algorithm showed the most accurate horizontal curve predictions at generalization tolerances of 0.8 m and 1 m. The results show that the generalization tolerance level contributes to the prediction accuracy of the number, curve radius, and length of the horizontal curves, which vary with the tolerance value. Thus, this study underlined the importance of calculating generalizations and tolerances following a manual road digitization. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (auteur) Evaluation of sea-level rise (SLR) impacts on coastal landforms and habitats is a persistent need for informing coastal planning and management, including policy decisions, particularly those that balance human interests and habitat protection throughout the coastal zone. Bayesian networks (BNs) are used to model barrier island change under different SLR scenarios that are relevant to management and policy decisions. BNs utilized here include a shoreline change model and two models of barrier island biogeomorphological evolution at different scales (50 and 5 m). These BNs were then linked to another BN to predict habitat availability for piping plovers (Charadrius melodus), a threatened shorebird reliant on beach habitats. We evaluated the performance of the two linked geomorphology BNs and further examined error rates by generating hindcasts of barrier island geomorphology and habitat availability for 2014 conditions. Geomorphology hindcasts revealed that model error declined with a greater number of known inputs, with error rates reaching 55% when multiple outputs were hindcast simultaneously. We also found that, although error in predictions of piping plover nest presence/absence increased when outputs from the geomorphology BNs were used as inputs in the piping plover habitat BN, the maximum error rate for piping plover habitat suitability in the fully-linked BNs was only 30%. Our findings suggest this approach may be useful for guiding scenario-based evaluations where known inputs can be used to constrain variables that produce higher uncertainty for morphological predictions. Overall, the approach demonstrates a way to assimilate data and model structures with uncertainty to produce forecasts to inform coastal planning and management. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (auteur) The early Dutch charts of coastal Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea are peppered not only with toponyms but also with topographic descriptors. The latter were intended as navigational aids and warnings for future navigators. Naming or describing a geographic feature is a method of distinguishing it from the surrounding topography. At times some topographic descriptors have been considered or interpreted as toponyms. This article explores whether there are any means of determining the difference between the two, and what may have been initially intended by the explorers who entered them on their manuscript charts. Reasons for the relevance of making such a distinction are also considered. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) Active remote sensing by laser scanning (LiDAR) has markedly improved the mapping of a cave environment with an unprecedented level of accuracy and spatial detail. However, the use of laser intensity simultaneously recorded during the scanning of caves remains unexplored despite it having promising potential for lithological mapping as it has been demonstrated by many applications in open-sky conditions. The appropriate use of laser intensity requires calibration and corrections for influencing factors, which are different in caves as opposed to the above-ground environments. Our study presents an efficient and complex workflow to correct the recorded intensity, which takes into consideration the acquisition geometry, micromorphology of the cave surface, and the specific atmospheric influence previously neglected in terrestrial laser scanning. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated on terrestrial LiDAR data acquired in the Gouffre Georges, a cave located in the northern Pyrenees in France. The cave is unique for its geology and lithology allowing for observation, with a spectacular continuity without any vegetal cover, of the contact between marble and lherzolite rocks and tectonic structures that characterize such contact. The overall accuracy of rock surface classification based on the corrected laser intensity was over 84%. The presence of water or a wet surface introduced bias of the intensity values towards lower values complicating the material discrimination. Such conditions have to be considered in applications of the recorded laser intensity in mapping underground spaces. The presented method allows for putting geological observations in an absolute spatial reference frame, which is often very difficult in a cave environment. Thus, laser scanning of the cave geometry assigned with the corrected laser intensity is an invaluable tool to unravel the complexity of such a lithological environment. [Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (auteur) Snow is a key parameter for global climate and hydrological systems. Global Navigation Satellite System interferometric reflectometry (GNSS-IR) has been applied to accurately monitor snow height (SH) with low cost and high temporal–spatial resolution. We proposed an improved GNSS-IR method using detrended signal-to-noise ratio (δSNR) arcs corresponding to multipath reflection tracks with different azimuths. After using wavelet decomposition and random sample consensus, noise with various frequencies for SNR arcs and outliers of reflector height (RH) estimations have been sequentially mitigated to enhance the availability of the proposed method. Thus, a height datum based on the ground RHs retrieved from multi-GNSS SNR data is established to compensate for the influence of topography variation with different azimuths in SH retrieval. The approximately 3-month δSNR datasets collected from three stations deployed on sloping topography were used to retrieve SH and compared with the existing method and in situ measurements. The results show that the root mean square errors of the retrievals derived from the proposed method for the three sites are between 4 and 8 cm, and the corresponding correlation surpasses 0.95 when compared to the reference SH datasets. Additionally, we compare the performance of a retrieval with the existing GNSS-IR Web App, and it shows an improvement in RMSE of about 7 cm. Furthermore, because topography variation has been considered, the average correction of SH retrievals is between 2 and 4 cm. The solution with the proposed method helps develop the applications of the GNSS-IR technique on complex topography.
