[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Among cartographic generalisation problems, the generalisation of sinuous bends in mountain roads has always been a popular one due to its difficulty. Recent research showed the potential of deep learning techniques to overcome some remaining research problems regarding the automation of cartographic generalisation. This paper explores this potential on the popular mountain road generalisation problem, which requires smoothing the road, enlarging the bend summits, and schematising the bend series by removing some of the bends. We modelled the mountain road generalisation as a deep learning problem by generating an image from input vector road data, and tried to generate it as an output of the model a new image of the generalised roads. Similarly to previous studies on building generalisation, we used a U-Net architecture to generate the generalised image from the ungeneralised image. The deep learning model was trained and evaluated on a dataset composed of roads in the Alps extracted from IGN (the French national mapping agency) maps at 1:250,000 (output) and 1:25,000 (input) scale. The results are encouraging as the output image looks like a generalised version of the roads and the accuracy of pixel segmentation is around 65%. The model learns how to smooth the output roads, and that it needs to displace and enlarge symbols but does not always correctly achieve these operations. This article shows the ability of deep learning to understand and manage the geographic information for generalisation, but also highlights challenges to come. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) Intertidal flats lying as a buffer zone between land and sea provide critical services including protection against storm surges and coastal flooding. These environments are characterized by a continuous redistribution of sediment and changes in topography. Sea level rise, anthropogenic pressures, and their related stressors have a considerable impact on these areas and are expected to put them under more stress; hence the increased need for frequent and updated topography maps. Comparing to traditional surveying approaches, spaceborne remote sensing is able to provide topography maps more frequently with a lower cost and a higher coverage. The latter is currently considered as an established tool for measuring intertidal topography. In this study, an improved approach of the waterline method was developed to derive intertidal Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The changes include a faster, more efficient and quasi-automatic detection and post-processing of waterlines. The edge detection technique consists in combining a k-means based segmentation and an active contouring procedure. This method was designed to generate closed contours in order to enable an automatization of the post-processing of the extracted waterlines. The waterlines were extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images for two bays located on the French Coast: the Arcachon lagoon and the Bay of Veys. DEMs were generated for the Arcachon Bay between 2015 and 2018, and for the Bay of Veys between 2016 and 2018 using satellite acquisitions made during summer (low storm activity period). The comparison of the generated DEMs with lidar observations showed an error of about 19–25 cm. This study also demonstrated that the waterline method applied to Sentinel images is suitable for monitoring the morpho-sedimentary evolution in intertidal areas. By comparing the DEMs generated between 2016 and 2018, the Arcachon Bay and the Bay of Veys experienced net volume losses of 1.12 × 106 m3 and 0.70 × 106 m3 respectively. The generated DEMs provide useful and needed information for several scientific applications (e.g., sediment balance, hydrodynamic modelling), but also for authorities and stakeholders for coastal management and implementation of ecosystem protection policies. [Termes IGN] projet routierRésumé : (auteur) Spatial impacts of highway projects on biodiversity of North-Eastern Himalaya remains largely unexplored. Usually a number of ecological criteria are required in biodiversity impact assessment. However, a wide set of such criteria can be overwhelming for the decision-makers to assess the viability of such projects. SBIAM uses landscape metrics and experts’ opinion to create a single composite biodiversity value map. The weighted area loss under various project alternatives estimated from Biodiversity Value Map is compared to identify the most viable alternative. SBIAM uses AHP and curve fitting method in the biodiversity estimation. The study indicates that the highway broadening project in the study area will cause a moderate biodiversity loss. Sensitivity analysis of SBIAM indicates its robustness, and shows that forest patches near the highway are most sensitive to disturbances and patch proximity. SBIAM can be applied in varied spatial scales, terrains and development projects as a decision support tool. [Termes IGN] tachéomètre électronique robotiséRésumé : (auteur) A robust geodetic framework comprising Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Robotic Total Station (RTS) and Multi-temporal InSAR (MT-InSAR) was employed first in India to investigate a landslide-prone Sirobagarh region, Uttarakhand, at different spatial extents, and to evaluate the relationship amongst the displacement estimates obtained from the applied surveying techniques. TLS derived digital elevation models indicated displacements >5 m on the landslide upper scarp. GNSS- and RTS-based observations showed horizontal movements towards the Alaknanda river in the landslide slope direction (maximum values: 0.1305 and 0.045 m, respectively), and downward vertical motion (largest subsidence magnitude: −2.1315 and −0.030 m, respectively). MT-InSAR processing of Sentinel-1a images identified 21071 measurement pixels, highlighting subsidence around the landslide (mean velocity range: −0.110 to 0.008 m/year). Analysis of displacement vectors using vector equality, cross-covariance, cross-correlation and principal component analysis reveals that GNSS vertical displacement estimates were partially correlated with MT-InSAR measurements (correlated for epoch difference 2–3), whereas there was good cross-correlation between MT-InSAR and LiDAR observations throughout. The displacement estimates and their analyses evident unstable movement of the landslide scarp occurring due to debris flow and rainfall, and a relatively moderate subsidence activity in the surrounding areas lying in the landslide zone. [Termes IGN] TibetRésumé : (Auteur) Time series of leaf area index (LAI) products are now widely used, and the temporal validation is the prerequisite for their proper application. However, a systematical comparison between different products using both direct and indirect methods is still lacking. The objective of this paper is to assess and compare the temporal performances of four LAI products: Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI (MOD)15A2, MOD15A2h, Geoland2 Version 1 (GEOV1), and Global Land Surface Satellite (GLASS). The study area, which is dominated by grasslands, is located in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP), and temperature is the main stress factor affecting grass growth. Both a correlation analysis with temperature and a direct comparison with temporally continuous LAI reference maps were implemented in our temporal validation experiments. The results show that no single product can capture the rapid change and the seasonal trend in LAI simultaneously, and the compositing period used in each product determines the quality of the corresponding LAI time series. The MOD15A2 and MOD15A2h products, which have short compositing windows (eight days), are suitable for detecting rapid change. A grazing-induced biomass decrease that occurred around day of year 205 in 2014 in our study area was clearly revealed in these two products. For the GEOV1 and GLASS products, which have compositing windows of 30 days and 1 year, respectively, the grazing date was shifted (GEOV1) or even invisible (GLASS). However, products with prolonged compositing windows may be more robust to observation noise, and the resulting products may be suitable for capturing the seasonal trend. This study highlights that the concurrent use of data from various sensors onboard different satellites, and the introduction of new generations of satellites (e.g., Gaofen-6), are two promising ways to further improve existing LAI time series.
