Since 3D data have such importance in the field of heritage documentation, quality control is paramount and must be performed before any point cloud processing is even planned to be conducted. The thesis is therefore divided into two parts. The first part concerned mainly the data acquisition and quality control of the point cloud data using the two techniques most commonly used, i.e. photogrammetry and laser scanning. A particular emphasis was also put on the integration of photogrammetry and laser scanning within the context of a multi-scalar documentation of a heritage site. The second part will address the processing of the resulting point cloud, particularly its segmentation and classification. The multi-scalar approach proposed in this thesis is an important point to note, as in many cases a historical building of interest is located in a historical neighbourhood; thus the requirement for a multi-scalar segmentation. By combining these two parts, the thesis had attempted to address the 3D workflow of heritage sites in a holistic manner, from the 3D data acquisition up to the resulting point clouds' segmentation and classification into individual entities in various scale steps. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (auteur) Adding building labels greatly improves the recognizability of buildings and the readability of three-dimensional (3D) city scenes. However, building label placement is much more complex in 3D scenes than in two-dimensional (2D) maps. The annotation effect is influenced by the attributes of the 3D label, building visibility, and the spatial relationship between the building and viewpoint. In this context, automatically generating building labels for 3D scenes during interactions requires highly complex computations. By contrast, evaluating candidate labels and then selecting the suitable label for each building can be effectively implemented. This paper introduces an approach for labeling buildings in 3D scenes based on evaluations of label candidates. The proposed method predefines a candidate label set for each building. These candidates are then evaluated in terms of their attributes and the relationship between the labels and viewpoint at runtime. The best candidate label, or a situational alternative for each building, is then placed in order of comprehensive label priority to avoid annotation conflicts. A series of experiments demonstrate that this method effectively enhances the correlation of labels and buildings, improves interactive efficiency, and realizes a viable global label layout. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) In the application of machine learning to geographic object based image analysis, several parameters influence overall classifier performance. One of the first parameters is segmentation size—for example, how many pixels should be grouped together to form an image object. Often, trial and error methods are used to obtain segmentation parameters that best delineate the borders of real world objects. Several attempts at automated methods have produced promising results, but manual intervention is still necessary. Meanwhile, numerous measures of segmentation quality have been defined, but their relationship to classifier performance is not then directly shown. For example, as measures of segmentation quality improve, do classification results improve as well? Our work considers the problem of building classification in high resolution aerial imagery of urban areas. Based on user defined training polygons generated with or without a reference segmentation, we have found several measures of segmentation quality and feature performance that can help users narrow the range of appropriate segmentations. Furthermore, our work finds that given this range, performance of machine learning algorithms remains relatively constant for any given segmentation as long as features used for classification are chosen correctly. We find that the range of scale parameters capable of producing an accurate classification is much broader than typically assumed and trial and error methods for finding this parameter may be an acceptable approach. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new framework for automatically creating compact building models from aerial LiDAR point clouds, where each point is known to belong to the class building. The approach addresses the issues of non-uniform point density and outlier detection to extract and refine semantic roof structures by a sequence of operations on a label map. We first partition the points into some coarse regions based on a region growing method over the Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) model. The region label IDs are then projected to a 2D grid map, which is used to refine the roof regions and their boundaries. We design an energy optimization approach on the label map to optimize the region labels. In order to regularize the contours of roof regions extracted from the label map, we propose a new method for refining contour segment vertices, which iteratively filters the normals of contour segments and uses them to guide the update of contour vertices. The effectiveness of this method is evaluated on LiDAR point clouds from different scenes, and its performance is validated by extensive comparisons to state-of-the-art techniques.
