ABSTRACT : In this paper, we present ISIS, a semantic solution for the interoperability of GIS. ISIS defines a context mediation approach that is based on three main concepts: a common ontology, a reference context and a set of cooperation contexts. The common ontology is used to capture the semantics of an application domain in a functional and generic way. The reference context is derived from ontology by specialising its terms. The cooperation contexts, which represent local data semantics, are obtained by interpreting the reference context. They are used to define a semantic translation process that allows the conversion of objects from one GIS to another.Numéro de notice : A2001-019 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : GEOMATIQUE/INFORMATIQUE Nature : Article DOI : sans Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=21721

[Termes IGN] Union EuropéenneRésumé : (Auteur) Europe is home to some of the most innovative minds in the geospatial techology industry, yet its actual global market share is estimated at only 5% (JRC 1996). Although important inroads have been made, the European GI-GIS industry still needs to improve co-ordination and harmonisation to better compete in the global economy. What is dearly needed is some sort of infrastructure to help channel the innovative developments of Small and Medium Entreprises (SMEs) which form the core of the European indutry, into a concerted, competitive economic entity. A focus on interoperability promises to facilitate this process. Here, we present the creation of such an infrastructure, code-named ANVIL, based on emerging new forms of GIS interoperability which go beyond traditional notions of hardware and software interoperability.
