[Termes IGN] Union EuropéenneRésumé : (Auteur) Effective GI interoperability will be achieved only by starting from the foundations of GI. The deepest foundations, Coordinate Reference Systems, have already been made interoperable by the definition of the common European system ETRS89. The next stage is to tackle interoperability for Reference Information - the basic information on which most users hook their own information. This is the aim of the Eurospec programme initiated by EuroGeographics. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The increased use of the Web and the Mobile Internet as a platform for geospatial applications necessitates development of improved interoperability between. Computing systems and underscores the need to apply standardized network technologies in processes dealing with spatial data. The generalization approach applicable in network-based spatial data services may be based on different technologies, compared with traditional cartographic generalization. Here, the use of Extensible Markup Language (XML) techniques in data transformations, with special emphasis on cartographic generalization, is presented. The research presented in the paper is focused on the Extensible Style-sheet Language Transformation (XSLT) process as a means to generalize XML-encoded spatial data in real time. The prototype system for real-time generalization developed at the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI) applies Geography Markup Language (GML) as spatial data encoding and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) images for map visualization. The data-access interface conforms with the Open GIS Consortium's (OGC) Web Feature Service specification. The implemented generalization operators include selection, building simplification and aggregation, and were processed during the request response dialogue in the network. The generalization process was tested on topographic datasets and results visualized on the Web and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Although XML-based computing processes are generally understood to yield poor performance ratings, the work shows that intelligent XSLT generalization processes can be introduced without degrading the performance of a mobile map service. Any*GIS from Hitachi Software Global Technology is just such software for the purpose of integration. Its greatest strength can be summed as integration without translation. The subject of integration was explored in a recent issue of GeoIngormatics, now we take a look at the Any*GIS suite products. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Editeur) Several years ago Navarre (Spain) implemented a Land Information System (SITNA) within its corporate Information System. Notwithstanding the success of this initiative, there remains a lack of metadata, an issue highlighted over the past two years by INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial InfoRmation in Europe). This is the context for IDENA (Spatial Data Infrastructure of Navarre), developed by Trabajos Catastrales S.A., to give SITNA a catalogue of meta-information, distribution of metadata and interoperability with other SDIs. [Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) To support diversified uses of geographical information there is a need for enhanced spatial data infrastructures to create interoperability between users and producers of geographic data. One important interoperability problem is caused by differences in data semantics, for example heterogeneous land use/land cover classification systems. A critical review of an existing method for semantic interoperability between land cover classifications is used to motivate and introduce a modified framework based on conceptual spaces and rough fuzzy sets. Land cover categories are defined by a set of defining attributes formally represented as a collection of rough fuzzy membership functions and importance weights. This parameterized representation is used to translate between the US Natural Vegetation Classification Standard and the European CORINE Land Cover system based on evaluations of different aspects of semantic similarity between categories. The results demonstrate that the use of different similarity metrics in a conceptual space, together with the explicit rough fuzzy uncertainty representation, increases the semantic separation between land cover categories. Diagrams and maps illustrate the information that can be gained from the semantic similarity assessment. These developments open new possibilities to explore semantic relationships between concepts, both within a classification and between classifications used in different contexts.
