[Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (auteur) Currently, more than 6000 operating GNSS receivers deliver observations to multiple servers. Ionospheric data are derived from these measurements providing outstanding space coverage and time resolution. There are about 200 million independent measurements daily. Researchers need sophisticated software tools to deal with such a large amount of data. We present recent advances and products from the System for Ionosphere Monitoring and Research from GNSS (SIMuRG). Currently, SIMuRG provides the total electron content (TEC) variations filtered within 2–10 min, 10–20 min, and 20–60 min, the Rate of the TEC Index, the Along Arc TEC Rate index, and the vertical TEC. SIMuRG is an online service at http://simurg.iszf.irk.ru. The system can be used free of charge and allows calculating both maps and series for arbitrary time intervals and geographic regions. All the data products are available in the form of data or figures. We discuss the system and its geophysics applications. [Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) China’s claim to a large part of the South China Sea (SCS) is indicated by a specific cartographic convention, the U-shaped (or dashed) line, shown on its official maps. The line has become an important element in Western popular discourse concerning the geopolitics of the SCS. This paper argues that the cartographic re-presentation of the U-shaped line in the Western press contributes to an ‘orientalist’ conception that portrays China as ‘other’; as aggressive and unwilling to ‘play by the rules’, and a portrayal of the whole region as potentially unstable. Its re-circulation may, however, work to China’s advantage by reinforcing cartographic precedent and creating a specific ‘geographic imagination’ of the SCS. Maps are regarded as an important element in the ‘spectacle of fear’ propagated by the West, with the representations of the SCS shown to be part of a wider use of maps by the press to cover issues related to geopolitics and conflict. People use maps to make themselves familiar with new environments and to form cognitive representations of spatial configurations and additional semantic information that are coupled with locational information. Since the mid-1990s, cartographers have explored auditory media as cartographic elements to transfer spatial information. Among the established sound variants used in multimedia cartography, speech recordings are a popular auditory tool to enrich the visual dominance of maps. The impact of auditory elements on human spatial memory has hardly been investigated so far in cartography and spatial cognition. A recent study showed that spoken object names bound to visual location markers affect performance in memory of object locations. Map users tend to make significantly smaller spatial distortion errors in the recall of object locations if these locations are coupled with auditory semantic information (place names). The present study extends this approach by examining possible effects on sound position as cues for spatial memory performance. A monaural condition, where an auditory name is presented in a spatial location corresponding to the object location, is compared with a binaural condition (of no directional cue). The results show that a monaural communication additionally improves spatial memory performance. Interestingly, the semantic information bound to an object location appears to be the driving factor in improving this effect. [Termes IGN] web 2.0Résumé : (auteur) Volunteered geographical information (VGI) refers to geographical information that the general public voluntarily collects and shares in the environment instead of for-profit businesses or government entities. Crowdsourcing such information on urgent needs in a disaster can improve the quick emergency responses. This study incorporates the capability of smartphone sensors, GPS, Web 2.0, VGI, and server-based technologies to design and develop a system for collecting target hazard information from volunteers. One of the most important contributions in designing this system is considering the improvement of the positional accuracy of the target buildings based on the position of the mobile device. Several approaches have been recommended for this purpose. The solutions include the use of online map services, geocoding services, and trigonometric methods based on the measurements of sensors such as camera, accelerometer, and magnetic field embedded in a smart mobile phone. The accuracy assessment showed that the trigonometric method by the means of embedded sensors would yield the best result. However, geocoding is more economical in terms of time than other methods. Potentially, the evaluation of the mobile application provided by a group of volunteers showed the overwhelming preference of crowdsource mapping over current telephone communication systems in disaster management. [Termes IGN] thesaurusRésumé : (auteur) Advances in linked geospatial data, recommender systems, and geographic information retrieval have led to urgent necessity to assess the overall semantic relatedness between keyword sets of geographic metadata. In this study, a new model is proposed for computing the semantic relatedness between arbitrary two keyword sets of geographic metadata stored in current global spatial data infrastructures. In this model, the overall semantic relatedness is derived by pairing these keywords that are found to be most relevant to each other and averaging their relatedness. To find the most relevant keywords across two keyword sets precisely, the keywords in the keyword set of geographic metadata are divided into three kinds: the thesaurus elements, the WordNet elements, and the statistical elements. The thesaurus-lexical relatedness measure (TLRM), the extended thesaurus-lexical relatedness measure (ETLRM), and the Longest Common Substring method are proposed to compute the semantic relatedness between two thesaurus elements, two WordNet elements, a thesaurus element, and a WordNet element and two statistical elements, respectively. A human data set – the geographic-metadata’s keyword set relatedness dataset, which was used to evaluate the precision of the semantic relatedness measures of keyword sets of geographic metadata, was created. The proposed method was evaluated against the human-generated relatedness judgments and was compared with the Jaccard method and Vector Space Model. The results demonstrated that the proposed method achieved a high correlation with human judgments and outperformed the existing methods. Finally, the proposed method was applied to quantitatively linked geospatial data.
