[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (auteur) We propose a novel approach for semantic segmentation of building facades. Our system consists of three distinct layers, representing different levels of abstraction in facade images: segments, objects and architectural elements. In the first layer, the facade is segmented into regions, each of which is assigned a probability distribution over semantic classes. We evaluate different state-of-the-art segmentation and classification strategies to obtain the initial probabilistic semantic labeling. In the second layer, we investigate the performance of different object detectors and show the benefit of using such detectors to improve our initial labeling. The generic approaches of the first two layers are then specialized for the task of facade labeling in the third layer. There, we incorporate additional meta-knowledge in the form of weak architectural principles, which enforces architectural plausibility and consistency on the final reconstruction. Rigorous tests performed on two existing datasets of building facades demonstrate that we outperform the current state of the art, even when using outputs from lower layers of the pipeline. Finally, we demonstrate how the output of the highest layer can be used to create a procedural building reconstruction. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (auteur) Parsing facade images requires optimal handcrafted grammar for a given class of buildings. Such a handcrafted grammar is often designed manually by experts. In this paper, we present a novel framework to learn a compact grammar from a set of ground-truth images. To this end, parse trees of ground-truth annotated images are obtained running existing inference algorithms with a simple, very general grammar. From these parse trees, repeated subtrees are sought and merged together to share derivations and produce a grammar with fewer rules. Furthermore, unsupervised clustering is performed on these rules, so that, rules corresponding to the same complex pattern are grouped together leading to a rich compact grammar. Experimental validation and comparison with the state-of-the-art grammar-based methods on four different datasets show that the learned grammar helps in much faster convergence while producing equal or more accurate parsing results compared to handcrafted grammars as well as grammars learned by other methods. Besides, we release a new dataset of facade images following the Art-deco style and demonstrate the general applicability and extreme potential of the proposed framework. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Modern spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors, such as TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X and COSMO-SkyMed, can deliver very high resolution (VHR) data beyond the inherent spatial scales of buildings. Processing these VHR data with advanced interferometric techniques, such as SAR tomography (TomoSAR), allows for the generation of four-dimensional point clouds, containing not only the 3-D positions of the scatterer location but also the estimates of seasonal/temporal deformation on the scale of centimeters or even millimeters, making them very attractive for generating dynamic city models from space. Motivated by these chances, the authors have earlier proposed approaches that demonstrated first attempts toward reconstruction of building facades from this class of data. The approaches work well when high density of facade points exists, and the full shape of the building could be reconstructed if data are available from multiple views, e.g., from both ascending and descending orbits. However, there are cases when no or only few facade points are available. This usually happens for lower height buildings and renders the detection of facade points/regions very challenging. Moreover, problems related to the visibility of facades mainly facing toward the azimuth direction (i.e., facades orthogonally oriented to the flight direction) can also cause difficulties in deriving the complete structure of individual buildings. These problems motivated us to reconstruct full 2-D/3-D shapes of buildings via exploitation of roof points. In this paper, we present a novel and complete data-driven framework for the automatic (parametric) reconstruction of 2-D/3-D building shapes (or footprints) using unstructured TomoSAR point clouds particularly generated from one viewing angle only. The proposed approach is illustrated and validated by examples using TomoSAR point clouds generated using TerraSAR-X high-resolution spotlight data stacks acquired from ascending orbit covering two differen- test areas, with one containing simple moderate-sized buildings in Las Vegas, USA and the other containing relatively complex building structures in Berlin, Germany. To solve this problem and to reconstruct quasi-planar 3D façades automatically and precisely, a set of algorithms and techniques for the automatic recognition of lines and 3D reconstruction is proposed. This includes: (1) a procedure for line-segment matching that satisfies the spatial requirements of a 3D scene based on “global independence” and “local dependence”; (2) a technique of generalised point bundle block adjustment combined with spatial line constraints (in the form of virtual observations) to control the propagation of error; and (3) the methods of perceptual organisation, plane fitting and plane–plane intersection are suggested to acquire the critical keylines corresponding to concave and convex building edges. Experimental results show that these new algorithms are feasible and applicable to recognition and 3D reconstruction. Recommendations for recognition methods are provided depending on whether or not a priori topological relationships are available between the planes under consideration. However, raft settlement, concrete shortening and construction tolerances cause deviations. The authors adopted the core wall control survey method to drive the new headquarters of the National Bank of Kuwait - a 300m-tall building - in the vertical direction with millimetre accuracy. The method uses GNSS CORS technology. This is for the first time that signais from the available BeiDou GNSS satellites have been used to assist construction of tall buildings.
