[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing image classification has proven to be attractive for extracting useful thematic information such as landcover. However, often for a given application, spectral information acquired by a remote sensing sensor may not be sufficient to derive accurate information. Incorporation of data from other sources such as a digital elevation model (DEM), and geophysical and geological data may assist in achieving more accurate land-cover classification from remote sensing images. Recently, support vector machines (SVM) have been proposed as an alternative for classification of remote sensing data, and the results are promising. In this paper, we employ the SVM algorithm to perform multisource classification. An IRS–1C LISS III image along with normalized differenced vegetation index (NDVI) image and DEM are used to produce a land-cover classification for a region in the Himalayas. The accuracy of SVM-based multisource classification is compared with several other nonparametric algorithms namely a decision tree classifier, and back propagation and radial basis function neural network classifiers. The well-known kappa coefficient of agreement is used to assess classification accuracy. The differences in the kappa coefficient of classifiers have been statistically evaluated using a pairwise Z-test. The results show a significant increase in the accuracy of the SVM based classifier on incorporation of ancillary data over classification performed solely on the basis of spectral data from remote sensing sensors. [Termes IGN] World Geodetic System 1984Résumé : (Editeur) The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India was completed in the 19th century under the leadership of the great surveyors, William Lambton and Sir George Everest. Most of the triangulation network points established over high hills are either inaccessible or have been destroyed. The error is more than the Ground Control Point (GCP) accuracy required for the Cartosat-1 GCP library (GCPL), which rules out the usage of these Greater Triangulation Network points as reference points for the GCP library. This essentially requires the establishment of a reference frame in a suitable datum system. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This study investigates fire-induced spectral changes detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in different land-cover types in Borneo. Linear discriminant analysis is used to determine the most powerful band combinations among the MODIS reflective bands for discrimination between burnt and unburnt areas in each land-cover type. The results show that the nature of fire-induced changes is dependent on pre-fire vegetation characteristics in this region. Bands 1 (0.64 um), 2 (0.86 um), and 7 (2.14 um) are found to be the most sensitive bands in land-cover types dominated by green vegetation, and consequently indices or combinations of indices using these three bands are potentially effective for burnt-area detection in the majority of areas. In land-cover types dominated by dry vegetation and soil, MODIS band 5 (1.24 um) alone showed the greatest statistical separability and could not be significantly improved by any multiband index.
