[Termes IGN] monographieRésumé : (Auteur) Spatio-temporal information (e.g. time, location, person and event) recorded in detail in vast Chinese historical books can provide evidence about the movement of entities (e.g. people, family, army and weapons) and their underlying spatial behaviours. Furthermore, this information largely reflects the process of social development, which makes it valuable to both professional research and public awareness. However, this information cannot be easily expressed and visually utilized because it is often hidden in the text of historical books. Aiming to better realize the potential value of such abundant information derived from historical books and bridging the gap between historical research and geographic space, a feasible and appropriate approach is explored in this article, to guide the transforming process from historical books to historical maps. The hope is that providing the scenarios of historical events will benefit related historical and social research. First, the integral framework of the approach was introduced, and the detail of building the specific spatio-temporal framework for information matching was discussed. Based on the spatio-temporal framework, the specification for the representation of historical books was designed. By extracting the spatio-temporal data from historical books, organizing them according to the specification and matching them with the spatio-temporal framework, the scenarios of historical events in the book (e.g. wars, migration, diseases, natural disasters, mass movement, etc.) can be visually transformed into historical maps. As the most critical writing of the Chinese Twenty-Four Histories, the Records of the Grand Historian (also known as Shiji) was employed as an example to test the proposed approach. [Termes IGN] subsidenceRésumé : (Auteur) Underground mining easily causes casualties, and illegal mining is a major contributor to this issue. It is a challenge to locate and differentiate illegal mines from approved mines over a vast area. Over the past few years, our research in satellite differential radar interferometry (DInSAR) to monitor underground-mine-induced surface subsidence has demonstrated the reliability of DInSAR. In this paper, a DInSAR-based illegal-mining detection system (DIMDS) is proposed to exploit the geometric, spatial, and temporal characteristics of those subsidence patterns. Testing results over a coalfield in Asia have proven the efficiency, reliability, and cost effectiveness of DIMDS in finding out illegal mines. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning LiDAR systems deliver not only geometric (X, Y, Z) information of the scanned surfaces but also the returned intensity of the laser pulse. Recent studies have shown the potential of using intensity data for many applications. However, there are limitations in using the raw intensity data because of radiometric system bias, reflectance noise and variations between adjacent strips. To overcome these limitations, a three-step LiDAR intensity correction algorithm is proposed. Following corrections for environmental and surface effects, an overlap-driven least-squares adjustment model that does not rely on the selection of homologous points minimizes intensity differences in the overlap area of strips. Finally, the Phong reflection model, which describes both diffuse and specular reflectance, is used to attenuate the effects of strong reflections that typically occur over wet or water dominated areas. The algorithm was applied to a multi-strip LiDAR dataset that covers wetlands in the estuary of the Yellow River, People’s Republic of China. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in radiometric differences in the overlap areas, and strong specular reflections in the nadir regions were reduced. Objects which were obscured by the specular reflection in the original intensity data were clearly identifiable after the adjustment. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Geostatistical characterization of local DEM error is usually based on the assumption of a stationary variogram model which requires the mean and variance to be finite and constant in the area under investigation. However, in practice this assumption is appropriate only in a restricted spatial location, where the local experimental variograms vary slowly. Therefore, an adaptive method is developed in this article to model non-stationary variograms, for which the estimator and the indicator for characterization of spatial variation are a Voronoi map and the standard deviation of mean values displayed in the Voronoi map, respectively. For the adaptive method, the global domain is divided into different meshes with various sizes according to the variability of local variograms. The adaptive method of non-stationary variogram modeling is applied to simulating error surfaces of a LiDAR derived DEM located in Sichuan province, China. Results indicate that the locally adaptive variogram model is more accurate than the global one for capturing the characterization of spatial variation in DEM errors. The adaptive model can be considered as an alternative approach to modeling non-stationary variograms for DEM error surface simulation. [Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (Auteur) Knowledge of the spatial distribution of forest types in tropical regions is important for implementation of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), better understanding of the global carbon cycle, and optimal forest management. Frequent cloud cover in moist tropical regions poses challenges for using optical images to map and monitor forests. Recently, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) released a 50 m orthorectified mosaic product from the Phased Array Type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS). PALSAR data provides information about the land surface without cloud interference. In this study we use the fine beam dual (FBD) polarization PALSAR 50 m mosaic imagery and a Neural Network (NN) method to produce a land cover map in Hainan Island, China. Subsequently, forest areas are classified into evergreen and deciduous forests and rubber plantations are mapped using vegetation and land surface water indices derived from 250 to 500 m resolution MODIS products. The PALSAR 50 m forest cover map, MODIS-based forest types and rubber plantation maps are fused to generate fractional maps of evergreen forest, deciduous forest and rubber plantation within 500 m or 250 m pixels. PALSAR data perform well for land cover classification (overall accuracy = 89% and Kappa Coefficient = 0.79) and forest identification (both the Producer’s Accuracy and User’s Accuracy are higher than 92%). The resulting land cover maps of forest, cropland, water and urban lands are consistent with the National Land Cover Dataset of China in 2005 (NLCD-2005). Validation from ground truth samples indicates that the resultant rubber plantation map is highly accurate (the overall accuracy = 85%). Overall, this study provides insight on the potential of integrating cloud-free 50 m PALSAR and temporal MODIS data on mapping forest types and rubber plantations in moist tropical regions.
