[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Geographical studies of outdoor activities have increased in recent years with the rise in popularity of these activities worldwide, including in Japan. Volunteered geographic information (VGI) is a key tool for organizing outdoor activities as it offers a means to determine the locational information and names of places. To evaluate the quality of VGI, geospatial data generated by land survey agencies and other VGI are often utilized as reference data. However, since these reference data may not be available, other methods are necessary to assure the quality of VGI. In this study, we examined five trust indicators based on the inherent characteristics of VGI through an empirical case study. We used mountain names extracted from OpenStreetMap in Japan as data because there were almost no other VGI in the vicinity. As a result, we isolated three trust indicators, namely versions, users, and tag corrections, to examine the thematic accuracy of VGI because these were the only statistically significant indicators. However, we found that the prediction rate of thematic accuracy was very low. To improve thematic accuracy, this study recommends using the most accurate versions, applying correctly given tags, and considering the motivations and characteristics of the VGI contributors. [Termes IGN] logementRésumé : (auteur) In Japan, the rise in vacant housing has created the need to develop quick, effective, and inexpensive methods to detect the spatial distribution of vacant housing at the municipal level. However, due to incomplete and inaccessible data, the change in the accuracy of the vacant housing detection model must be evaluated while accounting for the limited data. Therefore, this study compares the performance of vacant housing detection models for different data combinations (Basic Resident Register; building registration, water usage, and national census) by considering Wakayama City, Japan, as the case study setting. Three main findings emerged: (1) the contribution of the data to the accuracy varies with the combination of datasets and metrics; (2) even if specific municipal data are unavailable, it is possible to acquire a similar accuracy by combining other data; and (3) the missing value contributes to the vacant housing detection rather than the feature value itself. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (auteur) Mapping the expansion or reduction of rice fields is fundamental for food and water security, greenhouse gas emission accounting, and environmental management. The historical mapping of rice fields with satellite images is challenging because of the limited availability of remote sensing and training data from past decades. The use of phenology-based algorithms has been proposed for mapping rice fields because they can take advantage of rice fields’ characteristic spectral signature during the transplanting phase and do not need training data. However, in order to employ phenology-based algorithms effectively for the historical rice mapping of large areas, we need to incorporate automatized methods able to deal with non-usable data (e.g., cloud cover) and with spatial inconsistencies in the number of available images for each pixel. Here we propose the combination of a pixel-based, phenological algorithm with the temporal aggregation of all available Landsat images to produce national level historical maps of rice fields in Japan from the 1980s onwards. We used temporally aggregated metrics (median, percentiles, etc.), derived from spectral indices of a large number of images within the Google Earth Engine, to minimize the issue of inconsistent image availability and reduce the effects of outliers in phenology-based algorithms. We produced seven rice field maps, for the periods 1985–89, 1990–94, 1995–99, 2000–04, 2005–09, 2010–14, and 2015–19. The overall map accuracies ranged from 83% to 95% when validated with visually interpreted aerial photography. We detected a 23% decrease in the area of rice fields at a country level, although the changes varied greatly among prefectures. Here we present the first freely available historical rice field maps of Japan from the 1980s onwards, together with the source code, and a web application that enables the exploration of the maps and data relating to the derived rice field area changes. The application of temporal aggregation is promising for dealing with the gap-filling of large amounts of satellite data, reducing the issue of data outliers and providing an effective use of the historical Landsat archive for phenology-based crop detection algorithms. Our maps could greatly help researchers, conservationists and policymakers studying the drivers and consequences of rice field changes, and our methods could be extrapolated to map rice fields at large scales in other regions of the world. [Termes IGN] variation diurneRésumé : (auteur) This study aims to identify urban forms that are prone to heat storage in the Tokyo Prefecture in Japan. First, local climate zones (LCZ) were identified with 100 m pixel resolution using Landsat 8 data. LCZs include urban forms that are predominantly defined by building compactness and height. The spatial distribution of urban heat island intensity was obtained using LCZs and MODIS 100 m resolution land surface temperatures from 2013 to 2021. The difference between diurnal and nocturnal heat island intensity (∆UHI) was evaluated as an indicator of the relative heat storage effect between the LCZs. Lower ∆UHIs suggest increased relative heat-storage capacities. Seasonal average ∆UHIs for compact and super high-rise, high-rise, mid-rise, and low-rise LCZs were 3.1 °C, 4.1 °C, 5.8 °C, and 8.3 °C, respectively. Additionally, ∆UHIs for open and super high-rise, high-rise, and mid-rise LCZs were 5.8 °C, 6.4 °C, and 7.8 °C, respectively. Slope data also validated the LCZ height. LCZ and slope analyzes found lower ∆UHI magnitudes in all LCZs with high-rise buildings. Also, compact LCZs had lower ∆UHI magnitudes than open LCZs at corresponding heights. Therefore, higher-rise and compact LCZs are suggested to have larger relative heat storage effects than lower-rise and open LCZs. [Termes IGN] Tohoku (Japon)Résumé : (auteur) We conduct a global analysis of GRACE-reconstructed gravity gradients from July 2004 to February 2011, to test whether the deep signals preceding the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake can be detected before the event as a specific feature originating from solid Earth. First, we improve the angular resolution of the gravity gradients using two overlapping ranges of azimuthal sensitivity to investigate short-term signals of large amplitude aligned with the orientation of the Northwestern Pacific subduction. Then, we set-up a method to identify consistent solid Earth signals shared by different GRACE gravity models. Robust signals in a model are selected based on their spatial overlap and relative intensity with the signals of another model, so that their sensitivity to the GRACE data processing and ocean dealiasing product can be tested. We show that the dipolar gravity gradient anomaly before the Tohoku earthquake is nearly unique in space and time in the GRACE GRGS03 solutions. A well-resolved dipolar spatial pattern, typical of dislocations within the solid Earth and poorly sensitive to the ocean dealiasing model, is detected. In addition, the preseismic gravity gradient increase is highly consistent between the GRGS03 and CSR06 solutions, independently from their respective oceanic corrections, and can be clearly distinguished from rare anomalies of similar amplitudes all associated with the water cycle over continental areas. Our approach offers solutions for the continuous monitoring of the Pacific subduction belt to document transient slabs motions in real time from global satellite gravity fields, and their relation with shallower deformations and seismic events.
